I couldn't really think of other Sopranos parallels cuz a bunch of those people are actually sort of sharp (or at least good at their jobs)

xp

according to Bannon, Spicer got too fat to be the public face of the Trump admin so they only let him do press conferences without cameras

mh, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 21:04 (six years ago) link

Is that serious

Treeship, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 21:05 (six years ago) link

define serious

popcorn michael awaits trumptweet (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 21:06 (six years ago) link

Spicer is kind of an odd, portly dude, but he is 90s Brad Pitt compared to Bannon.

Treeship, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 21:06 (six years ago) link

Neither Spicer nor deputy press secretary Sarah Sanders responded to queries about the changes to the briefings. Asked why the briefings are now routinely held off-camera, White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said in a text message “Sean got fatter,” and did not respond to a follow-up.

it's a joke, but Trump has also "joked" about how he has standards for people that visually represent him and they did hook up Spicey with a bad Trump suit in his first week on the job

mh, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 21:07 (six years ago) link

Well, Bannon's definitely not doing press briefings, either xp

mh, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 21:07 (six years ago) link

Spicer is the only member of this administration for whom I feel pity mixed with disdain rather than just disdain. He's a winner in my book, relatively speaking.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2017/07/11/russian-lawyer-says-no-one-put-her-up-to-meeting-with-trump/

“I think it was someone who wanted to look like they were a big shot," said Veselnitskaya. "Goldstone. I think he said he had something very important from the Kremlin to make it look like he is a big deal.”

But she said she wanted to talk about the Magnitsky sanctions. In the meeting with Trump, “We sat and talked to each other for a few minutes and it was clear we were talking about two different things.”

It's really looking like this Goldstone dude just lined up a meeting between a Russian who was looking for someone with political influence on one side, and someone who wanted to get some political dirt from the Russians, and stuck them in a meeting with the hopes something would come together?

jesus christ what a shitshow

Why in the world is Don Jr. being permitted to go on Hannity tonight? I mean yeah, moderator in your corner offering softball questions, but wouldn't his shifty lawyer be saying stfu for a while already?

smug dinner-jazz atrocity (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 21:21 (six years ago) link

I am wondering if conspiracy is still applicable here; if TrumpJ thought he was going in to get Clinton dirt from the Russian government, wouldn't that point towards a collusion attempt even if the person he ended up talking to didn't have the info he was looking for?

I know it's tenuous and not as sexy/hilarious as the "TrumpJ cuts off nose to spite face" circus that's been happening today but is there a legal reason why that line of inquiry wouldn't be worth pursuing?

Well, there is that scene in "A Few Good Men"

Kaffee: Oregano, Dave, it was ten dollars worth of oregano.
Dave: Yeah, well, your client thought it was marijuana.
Kaffee: My client's a moron, that's not against the law.
Dave: I got people to answer to just like you do. I'm gonna charge him.
Kaffee: With what, possession of a condiment?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:19 (six years ago) link

Weird, don't know why I posted that. Must have been a draft sitting in my app. Anyway, just heard an interesting and in these days wholy plausible theory, that maybe the information about Don Juniors email Communications originate from the Russians, a shot across the bow to Trump for not giving them what they want.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:21 (six years ago) link

this moron:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/11/opinion/trump-russia-collusion.html?action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=opinion-c-col-right-region®ion=opinion-c-col-right-region&WT.nav=opinion-c-col-right-region&_r=0
The benefit of the doubt I extended to Trump was limited, but on a rather important subject: I thought that direct collusion between his inner circle and Russian officialdom during the 2016 campaign was relatively unlikely and the odds of ever finding proof of such a conspiracy vanishingly low.

But now that I've seen it I believe that the odds have increased!

Hadrian VIII, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:23 (six years ago) link

The key thing to remember from the NYT stories is that it's three sources in the White House providing this info.

They think "but Hilary!" is a great defense because they assume the Left blindly adores and defends its "leaders" like the Right does.

Hadrian VIII, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:26 (six years ago) link

Asked whether the administration was concerned about who had provided the New York Times with information and emails related to Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Russian lawyer, a frustrated White House official curtly waved away the question Tuesday.

“I’m not talking about Don Jr.,” the official said. “You can talk to Don Jr.’s people about Don Jr.”

Also I keep seeing reports on this

BREAKING: Leading Senate Republican says revised GOP health care bill will likely retain Obama tax boosts on wealthier Americans.

Doesn't that essentially kill it? Even if it somehow passes, what's the House going to do?

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:29 (six years ago) link

They are? I know of no one irl or online/media who would reflexively defend Hilary or anyone else against these sort of allegations. Any "but Hilary did it too!" retort, I'm just like "oh ok well then let's impeach her too then sure why not"

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:30 (six years ago) link

if 3 people in the campaign knew about this (presumably at least one of them not in the meeting, unless jr is one of the sources, which is possible i guess because he seems like he's got hundreds of chromosomes) then it beggars belief that trump himself did not know.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:32 (six years ago) link

Well, they could just take the savings fromt the Medicaid cuts, and then roll them into their tax reform bill later this year? Same difference. But like, do they think that people will fall for that? If there's still 22 million losing insurance, they're going to be okay with it because it doesn't immediately go to the rich?
