can Trump really be said to "know" anything

the price of atrocious neckties

Charles "Butt" Stanton (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:38 (six years ago) link

What does it even mean to know something, anyway?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:38 (six years ago) link

today's events keep reminding me of this episode of South Park:

Granny it's obv. a new frontier but Dems by and large have given HRC and Obama both wide berths on any number of offenses that would have them jumping up and down had Dick Cheney or the Bushes committed them

Hadrian VIII, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:41 (six years ago) link

I want to believe that Eric Trump is going around saying "I tried to tell dad that buttmunch would screw it up. I should be running the company anyway."

Charles "Butt" Stanton (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:44 (six years ago) link

That Coen brothers tweet thread is a hoot. I'd post some, but it would probably be better to split off a casting call thread.

earlnash, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:48 (six years ago) link

do it!

Charles "Butt" Stanton (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:49 (six years ago) link

We have one, don't we?

"It was literally just a wasted 20 minutes, which was a shame."

Charles "Butt" Stanton (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:16 (six years ago) link

...

if jr wouldn't have tweeted out the entire email chain, it would have been published on the NYT anyway, right?

(i'm not saying it wasn't dumb for jr to do it himself)

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:19 (six years ago) link

That is my understanding. He was trying to "get ahead of it." It still looks dumb though imo

I guess the word came down.

#BREAKING Donald Trump Jr says he did not tell his father of his meeting with Russia lawyer

— AFP news agency (@AFP) July 11, 2017

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:26 (six years ago) link

So despicable that Trumo would use his own son as a scapegoat.

Treeship, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:27 (six years ago) link

It's really looking like this Goldstone dude just lined up a meeting between a Russian who was looking for someone with political influence on one side, and someone who wanted to get some political dirt from the Russians, and stuck them in a meeting with the hopes something would come together?

jesus christ what a shitshow

― mh, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 22:18 (yesterday)

this is obviously exactly what happened. which is why i'm not surprised mueller doesn't have it. i reckon this doesn't touch on the things he's investigating i.e. actual conflicts of interest, felix sater, billions owed on development projects, dnc hacking, etc.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:28 (six years ago) link

what makes you think mueller doesn't have it?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:30 (six years ago) link

I think it all depends on what "a Russian who was looking for someone with political influence" exactly means, though.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:30 (six years ago) link

Yeah the significant part of this story is Donaldinho's eagerness to take oppo from the Russian sources and also his lack of surprise that there was a Russian governmdng effort to help his dad's campaign or however it was phrased.

Treeship, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:31 (six years ago) link

i keep wondering, is this the kid trump hit? i mean he probably hit both of them a lot, but from that story that was going around uh six months ago

j., Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:32 (six years ago) link

Yes, it is.

He's an odd one, that Junior.

Don Jr. to Sean Hannity tonight: "Someone sends me an email. I can't help what somebody sends me."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:32 (six years ago) link

Yeah I would never trade places with Don Junior, I'm sure he had a fucked up childhood. His mom claimed in a deposition that his dad raped her.

Treeship, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:35 (six years ago) link

The story of the Trump family is a horror story.

Treeship, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:36 (six years ago) link

caek someone posted upthread that mueller said something like "we'd like a look at those documents". but i don't know anything for certain obvs!

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:41 (six years ago) link

yeah the reports are kind of vague, e.g. http://www.cnn.com/2017/07/11/politics/donald-trump-jr-emails-special-counsel/index.html. the investigation has basically not leaked so far afaik, so i wouldn't be surprised if they already had this. although clearly they are benefiting from the internecine leaking to the press.

I like to imagine Mueller's team does all its investigating just by logging onto Cnn.com every day

Charles "Butt" Stanton (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:44 (six years ago) link

i'm not sure what the exact CNN report was but josh marshall posted this earlier:

We will try to have something more detailed on this shortly. But CNN a short while reported that the blockbuster news of the last three days was news to the Special Counsel’s office. There was some ambiguity about whether they learned key new information from the last four days of reports or whether they knew this stuff but only recently from Jared Kushner’s and Paul Manafort’s disclosures. Regardless, the key thing seems to be this: if we’re thinking that the FBI/Mueller has known this stuff for months, that’s wrong. They didn’t.

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/this-is-important-4

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:46 (six years ago) link

i could be totally wrong about this, but it seems to me like it would make sense from an investigative standpoint to say that you didn't know about the information until now, because if you had covert sources "on the inside" helping to gather info on the people associated with the main players, you wouldn't want to blow their cover. if they said "yeah we've known for months" then suddenly the pizza delivery guy who keeps showing up to the russian lawyer's house and asking if she's had any good meetings with sopranos characters recently starts to look a little more suspicious. i'm basing that entire theory on half-remembered episodes of perry mason, though

which is why i'm not surprised mueller doesn't have it. i reckon this doesn't touch on the things he's investigating i.e. actual conflicts of interest, felix sater, billions owed on development projects, dnc hacking, etc.

this seems plausible too of course

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:56 (six years ago) link

it does seem concerning, though, if mueller et al hadn't managed to stumble on this already, considering that some sad journalist has been working on the story for "a year" and mentions other journalists also pursuing the story, along with multiple high level officials ready to rat jr out, along with whoever else they already talked to

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 23:58 (six years ago) link

if they're pros then why are they giving us anything about when they did or didn't know anything anyway, the media should be one of their resources for disseminating disinformation and pressure on witnesses etc.

I'm not shocked that Trump will sell out his own son.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 12 July 2017 00:11 (six years ago) link

i think he'd sell out everyone to protect himself, when it comes down to it

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 12 July 2017 00:12 (six years ago) link

He'll personally come around to Junior's office and slap him in the face and knock him to the floor if necessary

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 12 July 2017 00:15 (six years ago) link

Well, if you lose a son, it's possible to get another.

Some other hilarity

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/07/11/trey-gowdy-trump-russia-240432

“If you had a contact with Russia, tell the special counsel about it! Don’t wait until the New York Times figures it out!” an exasperated Gowdy said in a brief interview outside the Capitol Tuesday.

Gowdy said the “somebody needs to sit everybody down” to find out what happened.

"Someone needs to get everyone in a room and say, from the time you saw 'Dr. Zhivago' until the moment you drank vodka with a guy named Boris, you list every single contact with Russia," Gowdy said, referring to the 1965 movie.
