Portman is a "no"

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 July 2017 20:08 (six years ago) link

he just issued this less than an hour ago:

"I’ll review the text of this new legislation just like I did the last version, and I will review the analysis from the Congressional Budget Office when it becomes available on Monday."

how is he already a firm No?

He would be tied for 4th in shortest presidents if he ran and won...
But judging from my IRL encounter with him, I think his claim of 5'7" is pretty generous.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 13 July 2017 20:18 (six years ago) link

WaPo:

Portman, who came out against the original draft of the bill, also said he was opposed to taking a vote at this point. “I’m in the same position I’ve been in, looking at the language and looking forward to the analysis,” he said.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 July 2017 20:19 (six years ago) link

too bad Rubio already took Little as a pejorative nickname.

Tiny Mark Zuckerberg?

evol j, Thursday, 13 July 2017 20:20 (six years ago) link

That's three.

evol j, of course, I'm just speaking out of my ass, I can't really know what these idiots will do. But Heller stood on stage with Sandoval and said he would do what's best for Nevada, and McConnell put absolutely nothing in there that made it better for Nevada, so as Sandoval is saying he is concerned, it is pretty likely Heller will vote no. The main difference between now and in the house was that people in the house could vote without a cbo-score, and with the idea that the senate would fix it. This time there's nothing to hide behind.

Though McConnell reportedly tried to say that the medicaid cuts would never come into effect anyway.

Frederik B, Thursday, 13 July 2017 20:20 (six years ago) link

considering it would be pretty generous to list me at 5'7" too this is the first thing that's made me like Tiny Mark.

evol j, Thursday, 13 July 2017 20:21 (six years ago) link

this bill is a moving target and there's weeks to go so it's definitely premature to say anything is "dead" until McConnell drops it entirely from the legislative schedule.

Humblebrag! Now that's something you'd never hear from a Trump, sr or jr :)

Sure. But at some point it's going to be pretty obvious that they can't do it, and then they will stop running their heads against the same wall.

Not saying that is necessarily now. But this draft is such a weak one, and was shut down so quickly, that it sure looks as if they can't get it done.

Frederik B, Thursday, 13 July 2017 20:30 (six years ago) link

ha WaPo's put their whip count up and now the "no"s are back to 2, with 6 "having concerns" so maybe they were a bit overzealous in interpreting Portman's statement

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 July 2017 20:32 (six years ago) link

when has the GOP ever done this

bitumen: the animated series (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 13 July 2017 20:54 (six years ago) link

as others have mentioned, it's bizarre to think that kushner is going to work today with his security clearances and insider position still intact.

what can be done in the short-term? obviously the republicans will do nothing. the democrats seem to be content to let the mueller, senate, and house investigations run their course, which will of course take ages. meanwhile, there is proof that kushner is full of shit. am i naive to wish that democrats would demand, at a minimum, that he gtfo the white house? are they doing that and i'm not just not seeing it anywhere? is dem opposition pointless (ie does it take a mob of people outside the WH with pitchforks to scare them into doing something)? did they just assume kushner would resign in shame but forgot that no one involved in this story has any shame?

i'm trying to imagine a hypothetical scenario that would lead to his immediate ouster. if kushner just straight up murdered someone on live television, then...would he be arrested? or would everyone just add it to the pile for mueller to investigate and patiently wait it out?

sure, but...i mean shouldn't they at least put on the table the very obvious thing, that kushner should gtfo, just so that maybe the people they ask to vote for them every 2 or 6 years will realize that they're on the same side?

sorry, ridiculous question, they should continue to not say much

just for fun let's assume the victim is a straight christian white guy with 3 kids

a bunch of GOP Senators would call it a "deeply troubling" situation and then move on with their lives

frogbs, Thursday, 13 July 2017 21:17 (six years ago) link

meanwhile the Hannitys and Inghrams of the world would openly ask what kind of person just lets themselves get murdered on live television

frogbs, Thursday, 13 July 2017 21:18 (six years ago) link

Conway and Sanders would probably claim that Kush was actually trying to save the man's life, but the dishonest media's cameras just made it look like murder

frogbs, Thursday, 13 July 2017 21:19 (six years ago) link

then a day later Trump would tweet out "Congrats to my son-in-law Jared Kushner for literally murdering a guy"

frogbs, Thursday, 13 July 2017 21:20 (six years ago) link

many people would have done this murder

Hadrian VIII, Thursday, 13 July 2017 21:23 (six years ago) link
