I just don't think anyone can like rye as much as I like sourdough. Not trying to convert anyone who prefers rye, or who has bread ambivalence. Just proclaiming my deep love for the iconic bread of my native region.

sourdough makes for good pizza crust actually

but rye, toasted, is far superior for the main function of bread, which is sandwiches

El Tomboto, Monday, 17 July 2017 19:59 (six years ago) link

I'm sorry but the main function of bread is toast.

sarahell, Monday, 17 July 2017 20:02 (six years ago) link

the main function of bread is TO BE STUFFED DIRECTLY INTO MY MOUTH RIGHT NOW

this iphone speaks many languages (DJP), Monday, 17 July 2017 20:03 (six years ago) link

The sandwich is just a convenient format for combining bread and a salad. I prefer to eat my bread and my salad separately.

sarahell, Monday, 17 July 2017 20:05 (six years ago) link

I'll say it again, but the main function of bread is smørrebrød

Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 17 July 2017 20:21 (six years ago) link

had to google that, but I agree, it is better than a sandwich.

sourdough is kinda bullshit tbh. enthusiastic celebration of this dismal hardship food is one of the worst traits of the Bay Area and that's saying something.

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Monday, 17 July 2017 20:26 (six years ago) link

would be better on sourdough tbh

sarahell, Monday, 17 July 2017 20:27 (six years ago) link

Sourdough in general, forever and ever amen. But rye makes excellent crackers and flatbreads.

Most of the rye that comes with sandwiches in NY delis is of pretty low quality, usually mixed with a lot of white flour as is obvious from its color. I've heard that Langer's Deli in LA has more authentic rye than, say, Katz's in NY.

I like both, but I think I have had more enjoyable eating experiences with not just sandwiches, but also sourdough tortilla wraps, chapatis, naan breads - that they edge it. But melted cheese and ham rye-bread pan grilled sarnies are also wonderful. I feel like in a post-apocalyptic type of world rye would piss it cos it probs keeps you alive longer.

calzino, Monday, 17 July 2017 22:31 (six years ago) link

I wanna point out for those on the fence (that includes me, these breads are both so good that you really can't go wrong) that sourdough makes fucking incredible french toast. I have not attempted rye french toast, but I'd be skeptical.

Rye is a rockist bread.

Sourdough. Rye belongs in whiskey.

Diana Fire (j.lu), Wednesday, 19 July 2017 15:01 (six years ago) link

Rye has a long and deep tradition that sourdough lacks. Consequently, it has more variants. And more flavor.

Challah makes better french toast than sourdough by a mile

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 15:08 (six years ago) link

eh. feel like challah french toast is pretty overrated tbh. but I've never made it at home, only had it at restaurants, where it's usually served in thick slices, I like my french toast in sandwich-bread-size slices please.

rye is nice but its weighty austerity fetters the tongue to the drudgery of nutrition, whereas upon the gossamer wings of sourdough a sandwich may soar

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 15:56 (six years ago) link

If pumpernickel is a subset of rye bread then rye>sourdough.

The people have spoken.

the pleasing taste of pastrami on rye outweighs any good sourdough sandwich i've ever had

if I were a meat-eater rye would be walking this SO easily owing to the heavy weight placed on the scale here, pastrami on rye is one of the soundest arguments for the carnivore life that I know of. does sourdough have any single sandwich incarnation as iconic as pastrami on rye?

she carries a torch. two torches, actually (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Wednesday, 19 July 2017 17:54 (six years ago) link

Pastrami on Sourdough?

DJI, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 18:01 (six years ago) link

The best of all sandwiches is the tuna melt and for that rye>sourdough.

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 18:11 (six years ago) link

Rye wins this in p much every respect. Tuna melt rye is otm, just as pastrami on rye, salted or pickled herring on rye etc

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 18:12 (six years ago) link

Sourdough, but it's close. The seeds are biggest reason to vote against rye. However, I'd vote for dark rye over these two easily.

Moodles, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 18:29 (six years ago) link

avocado toast is a sandwich and one of the soundest arguments for leaving the carnivore life (as long as you also add tomato, zaatar, and coarse sea salt)

i ate liverwurst sandwiches two days in a row for lunch thanks to this thread. or braunschweiger to be precise. plus swiss+baby lettuce+hot pepper rings+shallots+kosciusko mustard+arnold jewish rye with seeds.

nobody in my house shares my love for this meal. they didn't grow up with a mother from long island.

oh and boars head kosher dills on the side. just missing a cel-ray soda and a bag of chips for perfection.

I love the crust on sourdough and the elastic crumb. And the sourness, of course. Rye has its place for sure but I confidently cast my vote for sourdough.

scott seward, Monday, 24 July 2017 02:46 (six years ago) link

The blame clearly lands at the feet of marble rye for pandering to the sourdough lovers. Sourdough was always going to get at least 45 votes. If we had been more vocal about the anti-flatulence benefits of caraway seeds instead of trying to pivot to the center to please people who don't floss more ilxors would've come out to vote for rye.
