I've been checking out The Standups on netflix--some good mixed with some bad.

I'd rank the ones I've seen like this:

Dean Cole-- funny enough to make the "I didn't prepare for this special" schtick work

Fortune Feinstein - Hard not to root for her onstage, some really big laughs and an infectious, positive personality

Nate Bargatze-- more smile-inducing than laugh-out-loud funny--but that made the big laughs hit harder in some ways.

Nikki Glaser - very witty, but in predictable ways. I don't want to compare every lady comic who talks about sex to Amy Schumer, but her sex jokes hit the same sorts of beats.

I'm looking forward to watching the Dan Soder half-hour, haven't heard of Beth Stelling

I like that Netflix is jumping into the half-hour space--it's a more flattering format for like 95% of comedians

Sterling's was the only one I've watched. I like her in general but it was only OK.

just chanced across the new Ryan Hamilton thing after a typical 'tt and i give all the stand-ups ten minutes to impress us and they all fail after 90 seconds' session

and hey

it's really good

he's a lovely man too, a complete anachronism in style while also completely aware of the moment. maybe there's something to this 'clean comedy' lark. did i mention that the 90-second dross was all edgy? and then there was a bo burnham thing that was funny enough for 25 minutes but then became gross and unwatchable when it turned out he wasn't actually gay

fwiw i hate 98% of stand-up at a conservative estimate so this is genuinely high praise

Just watched the RH Netflix feature last night. I laughed and smiled through about 90% of it.

My gf and I listened to this set (from Joe Zimmerman's recent album "Smiling at Wolves") yesterday and were both laughing to the point of can't-even-talk-, stomach cramps etc. He's done tight fives on a few of the late shows, but these bits have only 200-300 views each.

New Judah Friedlander netflix special is fantastic, even tho it's p one note (and long!)

i used to like him but idk if i care anymore

I'd never seen any of his standup before tbh, only knew him from American Splendor and 30 Rock

saw him at the village underground earlier this year, i'm interested to see the special to see if any clips from that show made it

he was funny, but his schtick grated over the course of an hour

everything is from January and May at the Comedy Cellar, I think?

and it's all just him riffing with the audience re: geography and politics

watched the latest Seinfeld thing (the wife wanted to). Really odd how lazy it is, just this kind of nostalgic self-hagiography and a bunch of (mostly?) old jokes. I still laughed a couple times cuz he does know how to work his material but it felt like a really strange thing for him to do, like, why bother.

I thought there had been some discussion of it around here, must've been on some other thread tho?
