If you're going to bomb Canada, it should be for the inclusion of Hedley on the list.

Or that terrible Lost Boy song.

Obama wins this bracket.

That's a deadly level of Canadian content

I know--and I don't see Thundermug or the Viletones anywhere.

cowboy junkies obv

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 20 July 2017 14:36 (six years ago) link

Based on the tracklist, Blue Rodeo or Cowboy Junkies have the most nostalgic value. "29 Palms" and "Wheat Kings" are really boring choices for Plant and the Hip (but at least the latter was a huge hit). Listening to the first six or seven songs of the mix, I began growing drowsy.

I don't know Pierre Lapointe but this song isn't bad. It looks like he's better known in francophonie.

Voted NoMeansNo "All Lies"

Finally, a multi-artist poll where I'm unable to choose a single fucking option. It's literally impossible for me to vote for anything here - it all fucking sucks.

I did not need to be reminded of the existence of that Ruth B song.

Voted "No Myth."

Pierre Lapointe is huge in Québec since the early 2000s. He's nominated every year for best male artist and he's been a coach on La Voix, Québec's version of The Voice, for the last three seasons. His style is a mix of pop, chanson française and variety. Think a francophone Rufus Wainright kind of. (x-post)

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 20 July 2017 15:44 (six years ago) link

Yeah this blows. Needs more Junior Boys imo

Voted Fiona

josh az (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 20 July 2017 15:45 (six years ago) link

Geez, I read Pierre Lapointe as Pierre Laporte (that will mean something to old Canadians).

"PM Mix"... Is this what Trudeau listens to while prime ministering?

jmm, Thursday, 20 July 2017 16:16 (six years ago) link

Paul Martin retains his crown as Canada's most rockin' PM: Paul Martin, Canadian Prime Minister, recommends Motorhead/Nirvana/Smiths!

I feel like if JT was slightly older there may have been most crossover between his list and this thread?:
The over-produced female vocalist mor-pop to art-pop continuum of the 80s and sometimes early 90s, often but not necessarily from Canada

(and that his list would have been better as a result?)

Pathetic

flappy bird, Thursday, 20 July 2017 17:17 (six years ago) link

this is a bad list JT jesus christ and the high % of can-con has got to be intentional

Fiona Apple

Week of Wonders (Ross), Thursday, 20 July 2017 18:05 (six years ago) link

There's several artists in here that I like but the song choice is very weirdand it's specially notorious when paired with the other songs... instead of giving some new found value to deep cuts it kind of makes them worse and this looks like a chore to listen to. A terrible mix.

So many bland ballads and ... "Despacito"?

I also have a soft spot for "No Myth".

the idea of him singing along to Everybody Hurts after a hard day PM'ing is cracking me up.

if you can't get down with song for a winter's night you don't have any reason to be here

qualx, Sunday, 23 July 2017 06:55 (six years ago) link

I don't recall Sarah McLachlan's version but I can't imagine a world in which I would like it as much as the original.

list is most probably brainstormed by interns.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 31 July 2017 22:42 (six years ago) link

I feel like interns would have come up with something hipper or more calculated-seeming. Depressingly, this looks to me like a very believable playlist of someone around JT's age. I'm seven years younger but I knew people in high school whose tastes were pretty close to this, even down to the Cancon.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 31 July 2017 23:47 (six years ago) link

yeah this seems like a genuine playlist made by someone in the 90s that was just aggressively bland
