🚨 There are an unprecedented number of Democrats already challenging Republicans in the House. This is huge. 🚨 https://t.co/WAMB2d19aC pic.twitter.com/LhaHsxfrdt

So funny to watch Trump openly mock his own party: "Repeal and replace, repeal and replace..." (You'd have to be watching him right now to catch the tone there.) Straight out of the Republican debates.

if a rugged 80 year-old veteran job creator can overcome brain cancer and get back to work, the moral of the story is: tens of millions of americans don't deserve healthcare

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 24 July 2017 20:51 (six years ago) link

Wikler reporting that Murkowski has publicly stated she will be a "No" on MTP for any healthcare bill

which means, with her and Collins out and McCain sick, it doesn't matter what they're voting on, it will fail

I think they are trying to kill McCain.

Has Paul changed his mind? Or will he vote yes on straight repeal?

Frederik B, Monday, 24 July 2017 21:25 (six years ago) link

It would be a real maverick move for mccains dying action to be to effectively murder tens of millions of people.

Treeship, Monday, 24 July 2017 21:25 (six years ago) link

That's what mavericks do right?

Treeship, Monday, 24 July 2017 21:25 (six years ago) link

I could be wrong but I highly doubt the straight repeal will work when the replace died. Straight repeal is even more obviously destructive.

Treeship, Monday, 24 July 2017 21:26 (six years ago) link

Has Paul changed his mind? Or will he vote yes on straight repeal?

Paul will vote yes on straight repeal, but Collins, Capito and Murkowski (iirc) all said they would not, so that idea is also dead in the water.

...

I don't know what the hell McConnell is doing. If the wheels an old sick man into the senate to vote for a doomed bill that is polling in the twenties...

Frederik B, Monday, 24 July 2017 21:31 (six years ago) link

they probably have a secret bill with free health care for all that will pass unanimously but will secretly have a provision that requires all people receiving the free health care to serve in the army for a year, regardless of age, and if the right % of conscripted don't die as predicted by the actuaries, the difference will be sacrificed to a lion

Neanderthal, Monday, 24 July 2017 21:33 (six years ago) link

I don't think that's going to happen. I think that McConnell's gamble is that by forcing people to commit to a vote, the "no" votes will subsequently be more subject to pressure because they'll get a lot of blowback from Donnie Two Scoops, Heritage Foundation, FreedomWorks et al, which will bring them back to the table down the road. None of the leadership guys are ready to throw in the towel - the House precedent is instructive here - they figure this is just another move in a long drawn-out process. Of course, when reconciliation expires they're really up shit creek because then their options narrow considerably. But you can tell McConnell, Cornyn etc are gambling on doing further arm-twisting *after* this upcoming vote essentially draws battle lines.

xp

Οὖτις, Monday, 24 July 2017 21:36 (six years ago) link

lol at "I don't think that's going to happen." after Neanderthal's scenario. good xpost.

anyway tho - having the vote could also blow up in mitch's face if a lot more No's than those decide to declare themselves - hey, we wanna be feted with kickbacks and pork too! - massively multiplying an already impossible horse-trading scene. but if the gambit works and somebody folds for fear of being made famous as The One Who Blew The Chance To Repeal Obamacare then this post will look pretty fucking stupid.

I almost feel like, at least Trump broke all the rules to get something for himself. McConnell is just breaking every norm and going further and further out on a limb in order to pay off his masters. At this point, it's almost pathetic.

all i know is the gap between rich and poor is way too narrow in the united states. freedom can't fit through. it's time to repeal the abominable shackles of healthcare from the downtrodden and harness all the pent up liberty unleashed

“They ought to be aggregators,” he said. “We ought to take a score from Heritage, from AEI, from Brookings, from the Urban Institute and bring them together for a composite score that would represent a wide swath of their abilities. We think that’s a pragmatic way to rely on the private sector and let Congress rely on a score that’s accurate.”

Οὖτις, Monday, 24 July 2017 22:17 (six years ago) link

I find Trump's use of "beleaguered" as a pejorative really funny. First, big surprise, it suggests he doesn't understand what the word means. Sessions is beleaguered, it's true, almost entirely because of his nutcase president. It also reminds me of something an editor said to me 30 years ago when I handed in a John Candy story: "We may put this on the cover...'The beleaguered dad in Summer Rental'--that's the best you can do?"
