From the linked story:

President Trump and his advisers are privately discussing the possibility of replacing Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and some confidants are floating prospects who could take his place were he to resign or be fired, according to people familiar with the talks.

Members of Trump’s circle, including White House officials, have increasingly raised the question among themselves in recent days as the president has continued to vent his frustration with the attorney general, the people said.

Cruz or any other senator would look at what happened to Sessions over these past few months and go "Yeah, think I'll stick with my seat, thanks."

I mean, if they're bringing McCain back, McConnell *has* to have Dean Heller's vote on the motion to proceed in his back pocket, right?

You know what this healthcare bullshit reminds me of? The scene in Texas Chainsaw Massacre where they hold the girl down while lifting the grandfather's arm up so he can hit her in the head with a hammer because he's too fucking weak to do it himself.

Does any Cabinet secretary have the decency & nerve to invite Jeff Sessions to lunch tomorrow in a restaurant & let the media know about it?

I'd prefer everyone in DC start pitying Jeff Sessions and treating him humanely after he loses all chance at influencing public policy from now until he dies.

https://foreignpolicy.com/2017/07/21/trump-assigns-white-house-team-to-target-iran-nuclear-deal-sidelining-state-department/

Trump, however, was clearly upset that Tillerson told him he had no choice but to certify Iran was in compliance, according to the source, and asked White House staffers to take over. Withholding certification “wasn’t a real option available to me,” Trump reportedly told the staffers. “Make sure that’s not the case 90 days from now.”

Trump may still choose to certify Iran’s compliance at the next deadline, a source said, but he does not want to be in the position of where he was this week, when he was told that he had to certify because no other option was made available.

“He may not decertify, though I think he will,” the source said. “But he wants to make sure he never, ever, ever hears again that he can’t do it.”

Puke and Other Poems (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 10:45 (six years ago) link

Trump's presidency needs to end, either through impeachment or the 25th. I don't know if it's in the long term interests of Democrats to oust him but his bizarre judgment is frightening. Publicly attacking his own AG makes no sense strategically, it's just a way for Trump to blow off steam with no thought to consequences.

He's crazy.

Treeship, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 10:55 (six years ago) link

I would say that doing this on the eve of the health care vote lends credibility to the 'diversion tactic' thesis, but if he just wanted to do something to take focus from health care, why choose this? Who on earth is going to want to take over from Sessions now? And what does he think will happen at the Chris Wray confirmation hearing?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 11:08 (six years ago) link

What a guy! (There's a great Barron-related tweet too.) Unprecedented in my lifetime, I think. It's basically George Steinbrenner as president.
