This Sessions thing is obviously to set up a "I just like to be a dick and fire people" defense for the Comey matter.

tbf that was his election platform

So noble!

Talking to Sessions allies this AM, all same advice: Do not resign. Too much at stake, for conservative DOJ agenda, also for Russia probe.

Trump has been immune to so much the past 18 months, but maybe the Senate's clubbiness will be...I've got to say it, I need the words...A BRIDGE TOO FAR!

It's gotta be kind of a cool feeling, knowing you can tell a bunch of guys 'hey, guys, we're going to all vote on something today, not really sure what yet' and know that most of them are going to vote the same way on the thing that they don't even know they'll be voting for except that it's evil.

Rand's in

This morning, @SenateMajLdr informed me that the plan for today is to take up the 2015 clean repeal bill as I've urged.

— Senator Rand Paul (@RandPaul) July 25, 2017

sciatica, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 15:08 (six years ago) link

They are just kicking the can down the road, which is all the GOP is good for. So the Motion to Proceed will probably pass. Rand Paul will be told that it's clean repeal, Murkowski and Heller will be told it's BRCA with less medicaid cuts, in the end it's going to be skinny repeal that is going to be 'fixed' by the house. Who will then proceed to fuck the whole thing up again, once the freedom caucus get's back on it.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 15:12 (six years ago) link

so if "skinny repeal" passes, taking out the individual and employer mandates, it will tend to drive up premiums because there won't be enough young/healthy people paying into the system to balance out the high risk pool, right? which is maybe the plan, to "let obamacare fail" (by mutilating it and refusing to fix it).

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 15:12 (six years ago) link

How big is the West Wing? How did Trump and Sessions avoid each other if they were both there yesterday? If you've ever gotten involved with someone you work with, you know that from the moment you break up, you run into them 20 times a day. Must be a big place, that White House.

normally i'd agree about the dipshits in the freedom caucus, but in this case i can see them agreeing to sign on the bulk of it. if it takes away the individual mandate, they get to go home to the dipshits who voted them into office and say "if you don't like your health insurance, you don't have to keep it!", a sort of twisted version of obama's "if you like your health care plan you can keep it". "because of us the evil government can no longer force you to get health insurance! yay, some of you are going to needlessly die!" = something the freedom caucus might be willing to settle for

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 15:16 (six years ago) link

Susan Collins might be fun to have margaritas with.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 15:49 (six years ago) link

there's no downside to it, in my opinion. It would get rid of the worst, most effective member of his cabinet, it would create a political firestorm and possibly (hopefully) blowback against Trump, and it would cripple the Justice Dept while Trump flails around for a suitable replacement. Win/Win!

xp

Dan S, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 15:54 (six years ago) link

Thousand percent in favour of firing--the more chaos, the better. I have a tiny bit of sympathy for Sessions--just the ugliness of such a public humiliation of Trump's most loyal guy--that I know will be laughed at, but it's like Tony Bennett so sagely observed in The Oscar: you lie down with pigs, you come up smelling like garbage.
