i say they fire sessions and replace him with the mooch. that man seems like he's got ideas.

sessions isn't going to quit. he believes in what he's doing at justice too much.

trump will fire him tomorrow to distract from healthcare.

do we really want to go down the road of him appointing somebody who will then fire Mueller?

Dan S, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 15:54 (six years ago) link

Thousand percent in favour of firing--the more chaos, the better. I have a tiny bit of sympathy for Sessions--just the ugliness of such a public humiliation of Trump's most loyal guy--that I know will be laughed at, but it's like Tony Bennett so sagely observed in The Oscar: you lie down with pigs, you come up smelling like garbage.

Imagining the quality of people who will fill cabinet vacancies and other appointments under this administration has somehow become even more thrilling and exciting than it was six months ago.

Sessions: he mad (allegedly, second hand, etc.)

http://www.thedailybeast.com/jeff-sessions-is-growing-pissed-at-trump-his-allies-say-and-he-doesnt-plan-to-quit

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has no plans to leave office as friends say he's grown angry with President Donald Trump following a series of attacks meant to marginalize his power and, potentially, encourage his resignation.
“Sessions is totally pissed off about it,” said a Sessions ally familiar with his thinking. “It’s beyond insane. It’s cruel and it’s insane and it’s stupid.”

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 16:06 (six years ago) link

Buried deeper:

Sessions’ allies also point out that if the president wanted to get rid of Mueller, he could just get rid of Rosenstein. The fact that he hasn’t done so and is, instead, fixated on his attorney general, is treated as evidence that he’s behaving irrationally.
As Trump continues to torment Sessions, some of the AG’s allies have begun advocating steps to re-establish his position inside the administration. In particular, leading conservative voices have begun encouraging Sessions to undo his recusal, arguing that Mueller’s probe has extended beyond activities that happened during the campaign.

Why? Would that cause the Republicans to impeach him or would it just end the investigation and put the matter effectively to rest?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 16:15 (six years ago) link

would it just end the investigation and put the matter effectively to rest?

there is no "putting this matter effectively to rest" at this point. Firing Sessions would sow chaos and drag things out even further, there would be a fight over his replacement, a number of GOP Senators would be super-pissed to see one of their own treated like dogshit, Congress could just re-appoint Mueller, Trump would be getting himself even further into legal hot water (recall that the only reason Mueller's involved in the first place is cuz Trump fired Comey), on and on

there is no upside to it for the GOP, ergo I encourage Trump to do it

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 16:18 (six years ago) link

Trump only thinks firing Sessions and then Mueller is a solution because he is an idiot

He's not going to be impeached unless Mueller happens upon photos of Trump having a threeway with Eric and Junior. The firestorm over firing Mueller further cripples the GOP agenda and craters Trump's standing with the public even further.

Giving Trump hollow victory after hollow victory isn't working well for America, constitutional government, etc. He needs to be defeated. Yes, if Mueller is fired, this gets closer and closer to the new normal and it doesn't bring about the revolution, or any return to constitutional government. We just devolve into a shitpile dictatorship while Republicans snicker.

For what it's worth, the "hot take" the Intercept mocks from the Daily Beast is totally correct, and the bill as written is little different from existing law which has made it illegal for businesses to cooperate with Arab League boycott of Israel for 40 years. There are definitely reasons for the ACLU to take issue that that old law, but it has already survived a 1st amendment court challenge, for what it's worth. Yes, as the Intercept says

the text of the bill bans actions “which have the effect of furthering or supporting restrictive trade practices or boycotts fostered or imposed by any international governmental organization against Israel or requests to impose restrictive trade practices or boycotts by any international governmental organization against Israel.”

But it doesn't ban all actions with that effect, it bans six specific actions listed below that paragraph, which most definitely do not include "being an advocate for BDS." It's annoying to me that the Intercept would try to make it sound like it bans any action which might have the effect of "furthering" a boycott, though I think this is probably because they're not reading carefully, not because they're intentionally trying to mislead.

I mean, I don't think this is a good law, and I don't really think the old law was a good law, but don't make it say something it doesn't say.

another mouthpiece forced out

President Donald Trump’s newly appointed communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, said Tuesday that he is prepared to “fire everybody” in the White House communications shop in order to put an end to embarrassing internal leaks....

Scaramucci confirmed to POLITICO early Tuesday that he planned to start by dismissing assistant press secretary Michael Short at a morning meeting, but that move was apparently delayed. Short, who initially said Tuesday that he hadn’t yet been informed of any decision, resigned Tuesday afternoon.
