Giving Trump hollow victory after hollow victory isn't working well for America, constitutional government, etc. He needs to be defeated. Yes, if Mueller is fired, this gets closer and closer to the new normal and it doesn't bring about the revolution, or any return to constitutional government. We just devolve into a shitpile dictatorship while Republicans snicker.

Colbert otm, the Mooch is totally Scrappy Doo to Trump's Scooby:

For what it's worth, the "hot take" the Intercept mocks from the Daily Beast is totally correct, and the bill as written is little different from existing law which has made it illegal for businesses to cooperate with Arab League boycott of Israel for 40 years. There are definitely reasons for the ACLU to take issue that that old law, but it has already survived a 1st amendment court challenge, for what it's worth. Yes, as the Intercept says

the text of the bill bans actions “which have the effect of furthering or supporting restrictive trade practices or boycotts fostered or imposed by any international governmental organization against Israel or requests to impose restrictive trade practices or boycotts by any international governmental organization against Israel.”

But it doesn't ban all actions with that effect, it bans six specific actions listed below that paragraph, which most definitely do not include "being an advocate for BDS." It's annoying to me that the Intercept would try to make it sound like it bans any action which might have the effect of "furthering" a boycott, though I think this is probably because they're not reading carefully, not because they're intentionally trying to mislead.

I mean, I don't think this is a good law, and I don't really think the old law was a good law, but don't make it say something it doesn't say.

Now the idea is to pass a meaningless shell to get it to conference, at which point the so-called moderates will have no input at all

— David Dayen (@ddayen) July 25, 2017

Mitch's next promise on this will be to put 1 representative of the so-called moderates on the conference cmte. So they can get outvoted.

politico story above mentions confirming wray as fbi director if the healthcare bill dies this summer.. I dunno man. the same kinds of people were riding rosenstein's dick before he came on and aside from appointing mueller has been pretty much a bootlicker.

are we down to the nut-cutting yet

Oh no, not Ivanka! Wither innocence.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 17:46 (six years ago) link

I'm pretty much at the point where I can't give the mental energy to upholding the status quo or whatever anymore.. let trump destroy healthcare, let trump fire sessions and mueller. let trump be trump and watch the world burn. the sooner it happens the sooner we can start picking up this fucking mess.

and this is an awful thing to say and probably isnt necessarily true. =(

You've entered accelerationist mode, now you have to start reading Zizek.

another mouthpiece forced out

President Donald Trump’s newly appointed communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, said Tuesday that he is prepared to “fire everybody” in the White House communications shop in order to put an end to embarrassing internal leaks....

Scaramucci confirmed to POLITICO early Tuesday that he planned to start by dismissing assistant press secretary Michael Short at a morning meeting, but that move was apparently delayed. Short, who initially said Tuesday that he hadn’t yet been informed of any decision, resigned Tuesday afternoon.

Yeah, either posted here or elsewhere Mooch complained that the press was reporting on something he told the press.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:08 (six years ago) link

Question: can Scaramucci fire the president?

MTP is gonna pass, thx to McCain. What monstrosity makes it through the amendment process, who knows

mccain's an asshole but so are the other 49+ senators who will vote for this thing

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:14 (six years ago) link

basically this floor vote = sausage-making in public, with McConnell hoping that the public shaming involved will keep the caucus together (except for Collins)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:14 (six years ago) link

Again with Collins ... why is she even a Republican? Where does the Venn diagram intersect?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:20 (six years ago) link

tax cuts

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:21 (six years ago) link

i think if you just change political parties or switch to independent, you lose a lot of the people who just vote for anyone with a R by the name, and don't pick up enough D voters who would be (rightfully) suspicious of someone who identified as a republican for so long

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:21 (six years ago) link

all this to cut taxes on the top. remember guys, the most pressing national issue is that the gap between rich and poor is too narrow. freedom is stifled, for reasons

reggie (qualmsley), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:29 (six years ago) link

welp, here we go, McConnell addressing the Senate = he has the votes for MTP now.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:34 (six years ago) link

yeah this isnt even a healthcare bill its a tax cut/medicare defunding project

what is happening during this lull in the voting? is mcconnell going to each of the five and reiterating his promises to give them shit or whatever?

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:41 (six years ago) link

@jbouie
I confess I am skeptical that Republicans will suffer electorally for this. It's not just voter suppression either.

@jbouie
It's the number of Americans who will accept immiseration as long as they can stick it to the people they hate.

this sounds about right

it's only johnson and mccain who remain.

NYT had johnson down as someone with "concerns" about the bill, but eh.

guess they're saving the honorary Vote to Kill position for mccain
