And he sold his company for a tremendous amount of money. At the time especially -- this was a long time ago -- sold his company for a tremendous amount of money. And he went out and bought a big yacht, and he had a very interesting life. I won’t go any more than that because you’re Boy Scouts, so I’m not going to tell you what he did.

AUDIENCE: Booo --

TRUMP: Should I tell you? Should I tell you?

AUDIENCE: Yes!

TRUMP: Oh, you’re Boy Scouts, but you know life. You know life. So -- look at you. Who would think this is the Boy Scouts, right?

i disqualify myself because i done em both!

reggie (qualmsley), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 20:40 (six years ago) link

Re: Treeship's quote: I love how AUDIENCE: is just one character in this dialogue.

My parentverse is full of outraged people saying they'll never donate to the Scouts again etc., etc. Meanwhile I'm sure on the right you're seeing "Damn, maybe I should give Scouting a second look even though they're soft on the ghey."

I'm no BSAstan but if Democrats take their children, participation, and money out of it (while RedHatters sign up their boys in droves) it becomes ever more Trump Youthy.

Manafort subpoena ... no longer on? Conflicting reports.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 22:00 (six years ago) link

Because he turned?

(•̪●) (carne asada), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 22:13 (six years ago) link

Because there is no winning against Trump. This country is toast. It's time to break up the States and end the failed experiment. There can be no recovery at this point. It's too far gone.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 23:33 (six years ago) link

Maybe!

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 23:36 (six years ago) link

I doubt Manafort flipped or if he did it would manifest itself this way.. he probably said he would comply with their doc and interview requests so a subpoena forcing him to comply isn't necessary.

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 23:37 (six years ago) link

wouldn't you issue a subpoena in the first place only if he wouldn't comply? You give them a chance to comply first, then you issue a subpoena if they don't. If they are complying, no need to ever issue a subpoena.

I do not understand McCain's reasoning -- criticizing the bill but voting for it to proceed

Treeship, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 00:36 (six years ago) link

It doesn't make sense to me. I'm not sure I care to understand it.

Treeship, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 00:37 (six years ago) link

I thought he was trying to say that he agreed there should be a debate about the bill (hence his support for the MTP) but that he wouldn't vote for the bill as it stands.

In old school parlance this is called 'playing both ends against the middle' or else 'trying to have one's cake and eat it, too'.

so, as expected, BCRA was voted down 43-57.

sorry to bring attention to mccain yet again, but

1) did he not say during his heroic speech that he could not support the bill as currently written? iirc he even emphasized each word ("i. will. not. support. this. bill." etc)
2) he voted yay on BCRA

?
what an asshole?

Graham's good for something i guess

Republicans who voted to reject their party's repeal-and-replace plan were Collins, Murkowski, and Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Bob Corker of Tennessee, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Dean Heller of Nevada, Jerry Moran of Kansas, Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Mike Lee of Utah.

j., Wednesday, 26 July 2017 03:17 (six years ago) link

ok, going back to the transcript, mccain said "I will not vote for this bill as it is today". but he voted for BCRA. does that mean he was referring to the "skinny" repeal?

The American obsession with decorum is observed only by the center and center-left, and it's shitty politics that harms the rest of us.

— slackbot (@pareene) July 26, 2017

New Yorkers should throw tomatoes at Andrew Cuomo. Henry Kissinger should be terrified to leave his compound. John McCain should be booed.

oh, so he voted YAY on a motion to waive parliamentary procedure so that BCRA could pass with 50 votes instead of 60 (60 being the case for BCRA since it hasn't been scored by CBO)?

i don't know how you could vote YAY on that without also planning to vote YAY on the actual bill, but ok

"Skinny repeal" has to be the nadir--the latest one, anyway--of political phrase-making. Please don't let it survive the next few weeks.

clemenza, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 11:30 (six years ago) link

Skinny Repeal seems to be repeal without Medicaid cuts. So if that happens, it's a great deal better than what could be hoped for. Although it would make the system enter a death spiral, and I don't get what their long term plan is with that (I don't think they envision single payer in five years, which could very well be the result) But there's obviously lots of things I don't get.

A friend of mine who is much less famous than either and doesn't work regularly for a major outlet is certified. It's really just a matter of applying.

I suspect pareene correctly surmises that the blue check is as much a personal endorsement of Twitter, a toxic grease fire of a platform which is mainly used to heap abuse on strangers and legitimize hate speech, as it is Twitter's endorsement of the person. Also nobody should want anything Trump has.

Also congrats to him & Ally for having a kid (back in January) (see what happens? see what happens when you give up ILX?)
