While Democrats and centrist Republicans are already blasting the move, one White House official said the decision would be "seen as common-sense" by millions — though likely vociferously protested by others.

"It's not the worst thing in the world to have this fight," the administration official said.

I think Trump may be keenly aware that Flynn could probably kill him with very little effort and not feel even the slightest pang about it.

what generosity of spirit

“It’s not so much the transgender surgery issue as much as we continue to let the defense bill be the mule for all of these social experiments that the left wants to try to hoist on government,” Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), a conservative supporter of the Hartzler proposal, said last week.

He added: “It seems to me, and all due respect to everyone, that if someone wants to come to the military, potentially risk their life to save the country, that they should probably decide whether they’re a man or woman before they do that.”

yeah someone made that point a ways back, Trump's loyalty to Flynn is odd because Trump isn't loyal to ANYONE, outside of his sons and one of his daughters. he's got to know something.

Flynn hasn't crossed Trump, Sessions has. Don't overcomplicate things, all Trump cares about is personal supplication.

Pentagon officials thought Trump was going to tell King Jong-un that he was fired.

Flynn embarrassed him though and put him in an awkward spot

Treeship, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 18:39 (six years ago) link

In Trump's braindead logic I think he felt he was forced to fire Flynn by people who gave him bad advice. He's repeatedly mentioned that he regrets doing it and wishes he could have Flynn back. In the end I think Flynn is a straight dumbass Trump could bond with on the campaign trail because they're equals. Flynn would probably also run through a brick wall for Trump, again because he is a total moron.

How does this make sense to anyone? How are those two things related?

Frederik B, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 18:44 (six years ago) link

Trump knows Flynn has damaging information to share, his loyalty is simply a bid for Flynn to keep it under wraps.

I figure Trump's loyalty has a built-in time limit, and Flynn was removed from the picture before it expired for him.

Wouldn't it be something if Sessions had definitive dirt on the prez and just decided to bury him now (and then after he was done burying Trump he, y'know, dropped dead of a stroke or something)? I legit fail to understand why anyone would ever get in bed with the duplicitous fucker without having something to hold over him.

if the skinny repeal passes and then gets altered in conference with the House, the final product would still have to be voted on again by the full Senate, right?

evol j, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 19:36 (six years ago) link

xpost he said it as part of his powerful argument about how the federal government can't do anything at all (including deliver your mail for the past 225 years), so they shouldn't be trusted with running the healthcare system

not sure if it was mentioned but re McCain objecting to Yam ban on transgender military

.@SenJohnMcCain controls the must pass defense bill and could add an amendment to shut down Trump on transgender in 2 seconds. He won't.

both House and Senate have to vote on whatever the conference settles on

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 19:40 (six years ago) link

McConnell's goal right now is to pass something - anything - that will get a bill into conference and keep the dream of murdering as many poor people as possible alive

if you compiled a list of stupidest political things ever, at least 18 of the top 20 would have to be from the last year or so.

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 19:43 (six years ago) link

And probably like twelve of those from the past couple of weeks.

Chock Full of Love and Sexy Feeling (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 19:45 (six years ago) link

it's the j-curve / hockey stick of stupidity

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 19:47 (six years ago) link

McConnell is just trying to tire everyone out, isn't he? But this whole thing of somehow getting deeply unpopular politics through without anyone having to vote for deeply unpopular politics. The House sends a bad bill to the Senate, and the Senate will fix it. Then Senate sends nothing back, and Committee will fix it. Then Committee...

Sorry, it's not stupid, it must be really really scary.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 19:49 (six years ago) link

kinda reminds me of the sequester.. 'lets agree to something so odious that will never actually take place...' and then all of a sudden, woops its law!

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 19:52 (six years ago) link

that used to be a contender for a top 20 stupid political moment, now it barely cracks the top 200

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 19:52 (six years ago) link

Yeah, but it's a sequester amongst one party.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 19:55 (six years ago) link

Like, it's mutually assured destruction with people who should be on the same side. As if France and Italy began a really complicated system of nuclear escalation with lots of moving parts and complicated systems. Just in case. Instead of... not.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 19:57 (six years ago) link

the skinny repeal ideas are also so stupid by themselves - removing the mandates just depletes the pools of insured and removes a funding source. It doesn't remove Obamacare, it just makes it work even more poorly. Which the GOP will be blamed for (one hopes).

And then the Dems can get back into office and pass single payer.

and then the GOP can spend 15 years trying to get that repealed, rinse and repeat
