getting to conference with the House doesn't really solve anything - then they just have to renegotiate a bill and bring *that* back to the Senate, where it will probably have a whole bunch of garbage the hard right and the "moderates" don't like, and then we're back to another nail-biting vote with a thin margin for victory.

the above-referenced scenario with the House agreeing to the stripped down "skinny" repeal is probably going to look more attractive to everybody that matters (incl Trump)

So let me understand, "skinny repeal" is the one where individual mandate goes away but insurers still have to abide by ACA regulations so they quickly stop offering coverage and there's a massive crisis?

Can they really get everything past the senate parliamentarian, though? Wouldn't it have to impact the budget to get under budget reconciliation? I don't understand what's going on at the moment.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 21:17 (six years ago) link

On this one, Rand is correct.

It IS useful to see that the same Republicans who can vote for root-and-branch repeal 50 times or whatever - when it's empty anti-Obama symbolism - won't do so when they have full control and it might actually happen.

This is valuable information for both sides.

they have to show that removing the mandates/medical device tax shows a certain amount of savings, I think that's the only requirement under the Byrd Rule for this effort

Place not your faith in the Senate Parliamentarian, people.

Once someone tells Trump that there is such a person, that person could be Comeyed, good and hard.

(Side note: as a child, I used to play with the children of the then-Senate Parliamentarian.)

Right, but... how can repealing a tax mean savings?

idgi either tbh but that's probably what a bunch of these mystery amendments are going to address. maybe the argument is that repealing the mandates = less people in the pools = less people requiring subsidies? idk

I saw more than one comment the other day that the whole approach felt like a 'let's just do it and be legends, man' punt, and so it seems to be.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 23:00 (six years ago) link

"This is like a car crash. Everyone will slow down to look at the carnage but no one will get out to help," said one senior GOP aide.

I would say that this is indicative of GOP philosophy in general, except that's probably being unduly generous, a more appropriate analogy would involve them causing the crash in the first place

(but seriously what kind of asshole just drives by a crash without stopping to help)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 23:28 (six years ago) link

Is anyone going to come up with an alternative direction? If not, are any Senate Republicans going to oppose a skinny repeal bill solely because of this lack of clarity about where this is all going? When asked this question, one of the current GOP aides answered, "Nope. Because [Majority Leader Mitch} McConnell has some mystical power to convince people he knows what he is doing."

It's really not McConnel Mystery Magic as much as it's the rest of the GOP senators being complete idiots...

xp @reggie

Bannon is a culture warrior with larger aims than Trump, or the GOP. He's a populist, yes, but mostly fixated on a perceived decline of the West that came with the 18th century Enlightenment. Tax rates mean little to him, he's trying to roll back modernity. See the Ian Masters interview with Joshua Green, author of Devil's Bargain.

Suuuuuuuuure.

The Intercept has been completely co-opted (if was ever "opted") as a psyops mouthpiece to sow discord in the left while pretending to be of the left, when it's not at all. It's mostly a venue for exaggerated, fact-challenged, unedited barf pieces where the upshot is always "Democrats Suck," to reinforce the insipid bubble that certain people (ahem) live in.

It should merit approximately as much credulity as the NYT editorial page, in other words, although since there's no print edition it's not as useful for a charcoal starter or birdcage liner.

SCOOP: Senate Intel Committee Wants To Interview Chuck Johnson As Part Of Trump-Russia Probe https://t.co/ztODX6njWh @dailycaller

— Chuck Ross (@ChuckRossDC) July 27, 2017

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 July 2017 02:36 (six years ago) link

Even better -- it's about the GOP operative suicide guy

Johnson says that he believes that the committee wants to talk to him about his work with Peter Smith, a longtime GOP opposition researcher who formed a team of investigators and cyber sleuths last year to obtain emails that Hillary Clinton deleted from her private email server.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 July 2017 02:36 (six years ago) link

Johnson, who has reported for The Daily Caller in the past, says that he plans to accommodate the Senate committee, though he will insist on testifying in a public setting. If he ends up giving a closed-door interview, which has been the norm so far for the committee, Johnson says he will likely attend without an attorney present.

He did add that he plans to turn any Senate appearance into a “circus.”

I have a feeling this is not going to turn out the way he thinks.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 July 2017 02:37 (six years ago) link

I just used the word credulity either completely incorrectly or at least really awkwardly but the point stands that not even parakeets can take sufficient shits on the intercept to make it worth anyone's time.
