yeah not looking at the misogynist comments about Murkowski/Collins that are soon to come

McCain, w/e

Was wondering what Heller had to lose by going consistently "nay" on this repeal stuff. He would have one of the easiest newsroom "moderate-R" talking head positions in the world and still be getting paid.

oh now McConnell is pretending he wants to hear Democrat ideas, how cuet

Neanderthal, Friday, 28 July 2017 05:59 (six years ago) link

The Republican guy on CNN surely has it right--this was one big middle-finger from McCain to Trump (which he couldn't really do if he'd stayed home, not in the same way).

I was hoping he'd ask for the floor and then give the Blade Runner speech

Neanderthal, Friday, 28 July 2017 06:02 (six years ago) link

tho what could he say really

Neanderthal, Friday, 28 July 2017 06:07 (six years ago) link

Yeah it's a hypothetical that only gets answered in the moment and that moment is a coup

ein Sexmonster (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 28 July 2017 06:12 (six years ago) link

the mcconnell speech was incredible

Some goon on MSNBC just pronounced McCain the current "Lion of the Senate"

That's some tired ass old lion.

in the UK this would probably trigger a no-confidence vote and new elections, wouldn't it? a failure of this magnitude? the party of government not being able to pass legislation?

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 28 July 2017 07:33 (six years ago) link

I'm pretty sure the US constitution mandates that there should be at least one non-functional branch at all times.

Did the final Russia / Iran / NK sanctions bill that the Senate voted on take out the bits that the EU was considering retaliatory sanctions over or was it passed as-is?

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Friday, 28 July 2017 07:44 (six years ago) link

Surprising no-one - the_donald fucking loves Scaramucci - "they've had six months of attempting to work with Washington, now time to DRAIN THE SWAMP"

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 28 July 2017 08:55 (six years ago) link

"hell yeah I saw it, we got 49 'yes' votes, that has to be good. I mean, there's what, 60 senators?....there's 100? so 100 - 49 is....41, right? so we won!...51? I don't follow. what do you mean "carry", what is carrying? ok ok let's say I take you at your word that it's 51 - we still won, right?"

did you guys ever see that "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" where Peter Lorre bets Steve McQueen over a series of cigarette-lighter ignitions, and if Lorre wins he can chop off Steve's thumb? That's where we are, only it's our head.

I think this must be written by Roald Dahl since it turns up in the first series of his Tales of the Unexpected as Man From The South.
That's the version of the story I'm most familiar with , where the twist end has the would-be amputator's wife appear say she already owns everything and show the stumps on her hand where her fingers used to be.
I think McQueen character was supposed to win a beautiful car or similar.

My favorite response so far:

Time to repeal 17th Amendment. Founders had it right-Senators chosen by state legislatures. Will work for their states and respect 10th amid

lol:

Collins joined the group as another clutch of Republican senators formed in the well of the Senate Chamber. Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), who operates in McCain’s long shadow, stood next to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), who counts GOP votes, and Pence. Eventually, Flake was dispatched to talk to McCain.

He obliged, walked over to McCain and asked Graham to move over one seat. But McCain did not acknowledge Flake, focusing instead on Murkowski and Collins.

That left Flake, one of the most polite members of the Senate, leaning into the conversation uncomfortably with a pained look on his face, as if he had to tell his father that he had run over the family dog with his car

McCain could've stayed home in treatment or voted no on the MTP and reached the same result. Why put himself (& us) through all this?

I can't be the only one wondering if McCain is mirroring Lukas Haas's arc in Everyone Says I Love You.

Roald Dahl story meaning about overconfidently placing a supposedly sure fire bet on something with a reward that cannot deliver? So oddly fitting really, even in the wider reading, not just the anticipatory part?

Stevolende, Friday, 28 July 2017 12:07 (six years ago) link

Comment somewhere that gave me the sad lols: the two women senators who voted no now feel like every woman in a meeting, ever.

kim jong deal (suzy), Friday, 28 July 2017 12:09 (six years ago) link

too deep a reading for me, Stevolende.

McCain is such a raging narcissist all the browbeating in the media this week calling him a fraud may have worked.

lol, I was thinking the same thing about the Senate while I was watching.

Was all worth it for the brief moment I thought Mitch would start crying, like he just watched McCain maverick the family dog after mavericking Mitch in the nuts.

Is there any reason they just can't do this all again?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 28 July 2017 12:14 (six years ago) link

xpost tbf, McCain literally said, before voting to advance debate, that he was a no on the bill as written.
