Now that Reince and Spicer are out, Speaker Ryan is without a strong ally in the West Wing

Bret Stephens just wondered why Trump hadn't asked Sean Hannity to take the job.

And, of course, this wipes the shit stain of the health care bill debacle. He probably fired Preibus just to get the news out of the headlines.

I bet he did! I bet that's why Mooch was mad that dinner was reported on. I bet Sean said no and Trump asked "who else we got? hm, how about this guy already in an important position, what about him?"

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 28 July 2017 21:06 (six years ago) link

essentially this just ramps up GOP in-fighting. with the collapse of healthcare legislation and no discernible interest in policy, the White House is in the process of walling itself off entirely from the party and Congress - they aren't going to communicate, they aren't going to cooperate, and each is going to view the other with distrust and incomprehension. Sounds good!

Comparison I keep hearing over the moons is how the Carter admin and a Democratic Congress failed to get along. True?

This is totally Trump taking control of the news cycle narrative.

Plus Reince had publicly said he wanted to stay "through healthcare" so guess what, that's done now bye bye

The GOP should ask McCain where he is getting his cancer treatment.

Trump: Through healthcare, you said?

Comparison I keep hearing over the moons is how the Carter admin and a Democratic Congress failed to get along. True?

an imperfect analogy but yeah there's some parallels. Obviously major differences in character and goals between Trump and Carter.

I wonder if Reince feels it was all worth it

Οὖτις, Friday, 28 July 2017 21:11 (six years ago) link

It's quite incredible to me, this is how Trump and his idiots handle a prolonged period of relative stability and security! What the fuck will the first real crisis evince? And not even a big one, like, I dunno, a garbage strike or something?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 28 July 2017 21:11 (six years ago) link

i'd like to believe that after this healthcare debacle they won't try to resurrect the idea again but i'm guessing we'll see probably half a dozen or so more attempts to do some kind of repeal/replace and that chances are good that one of them will end up succeeding eventually. tho who knows if this time next year there are impeachment hearings or some other crazy sweeps week bullshit cliffhangers maybe they really do never come back this way again.

Mordy, Friday, 28 July 2017 21:11 (six years ago) link

I mean, one of these guys is going to turn on Trump at some point, and drop this facade of respect about what an honor it was blah blah blah

nope. sequestration period ends Sept 1 iirc. After that they need 60 votes and no fucking way are the Senate Dems gonna cooperate at this point, look at how well Schumer's held the caucus together up to now, not even Heitkamp or Manchin have wavered.

Mrs. Mooch had the right idea.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 28 July 2017 21:13 (six years ago) link

I've read a couple of tentative Carter and Trump analogies. They don't work in part because I can't imagine (a) Hamilton Jordan bragging about Jody Powell sucking his own cock (b) Carter bragging about vagina grabbing.

Chiefs of staff have congressional relations and understand power, hence why so many of them have been either Washington insider types (Leon Panetta, James Baker) or governors (John Sununu, Sherman Adams). John Kelly is a general and has never worked with Congress. It's a pick a moron would pick, which, well, yeah.
