A few (or more) are already secretly thinking about it, but it's extremely tricky for them. Trump won a lot of primaries and has a strong following among the sorts of deplorable voters Republicans have courted and made into a big part of their base.

The Congressional Rs can't afford to alienate 30% of their party base just because they hate Trump. They'll need a strong pretext of malfeasance or misconduct, and even then they will have to sell it hard to the base, who like Trump better than them. That strong pretext is what they hope Mueller will give them in five or six months, when he reports on his findings.

i figure that, but it's still a hard bargain. that senate map doesn't look great for democrats trying to gain seats. i'd say heller in nevada is vulnerable, but who else? flake? so reasonable expectation is maybe take the house and even up in the senate with pence as tiebreaker still. you still need 67 senators to convict. assuming all dems are in, i'm doubting that 17 gop senators will turn on him unless there's dire electoral ramifications.

He didn't change his vote to NO and time's running out to pass anything under reconciliation. Sept. 1 is the deadline.

The vote on tabling the procedure, right? He could have said no and debate might have continued, I think. As it is, if he wants to keep pushing health care he has to start the process all over again.

I think. Anyway, he's welcome to keep trying, but it's literally been taking up all of his time, and as Alfred pointed out, there are other pressing deadlines. After they come back from recess (I assume they're not still cutting recess?) they almost immediately have to jump into budget stuff, which if anything could be as contentious as healthcare, depending on how dickish people like Cruz and Paul get.

It's a traditional Senate trick to bring a bill up for debate again. Harry Reid used it often too.

I mean look how long it took them to get THIS bill to the table. the House signed their bill on May 4th, it took almost 3 months for the Senate to actually get a bill to a vote and it failed. this isn't "change two lines, insert one, pass!"

I did not realize this at first but Blobfish cant bring up healthcare again under reconciliation, because it was already debated and voted on. McCain screwed him on a procedural technicality.

I'd never heard of that nuance - a single bill per topic per fiscal year (how do the Senate rules define "topic"?) - but it sounds like kind of arcane thing the Senate is prone to. I defer to other experts.

ACA would have passed really easily w 51 votes. Might have even included a public option. But because Reid needed 60 votes he had to appease assholes like Joe Lieberman.

That McCain analysis looks solid, or at least makes sense to me. Mitch could bring the ACA up the same way again next year, as part of the same reconciliation run-around, but he would be doing it at the expense of other "budget" issues, like taxation, and it would become his main focus once again, except this time in the middle of an election year. So it looks likely that yeah, barring a major change in congress, this issue is done for now, at least this way. In fact, per those probably premature lame duck pieces about Trump, it is quite possible that on the legislative front his powder is all wet. (Not that he had any real pull to begin with.) Next up is debt ceiling in September, which will take some effort, and then we're basically at the start of 2018 silly season, in which the GOP will be hammered from the right for not repealing the ACA, from the left for trying to repeal the ACA, and in the meantime remain stuck in this weird non-productive purgatory in which they waste even more time and energy on their squeakier wheels and putting out Trumpster fires. And then adding to that is Trump himself, whose key gift seems to be fucking everything up just for the sake of entropy.

Ha, already rumors circulating per "admin sources" that Kelly to CoS makes it more likely that Trump may oust McMaster next and replace him with Pompeo. Which, as noted, would leave CIA, FBI, DHS, Army, Navy and FEMA without directors.

The big question in my mind regarding near future of the ACA is whether the Republicans will do whatever is in their power to introduce turmoil into the insurance market and defund any part of the ACA they can, so they can continue to claim it is a disaster. That's been their strategy for about 8 years now, so they might just keep it up out of habit, in default of any better ideas.
