NRO set themselves up so completely in the NeverTrump camp that they can't turn back now. So, as they say, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Williamson in particular has consistently rubbished Trump; he made a post back last May when Trump locked down the nomination reading "Remember, You Asked for This," which he put up to, as he said in it, to refer back to whenever necessary. (It has been unsurprisingly referred back to a lot.)

That said, worth remembering that part of his anti-Trump stance grew out of what he considered to be unseemly populism at overpromising things to rural out-of-work constituents -- and that Williamson openly is pitiless about said communities, pretty much saying underwater towns like that should die off and people should move.

he's terrible, but i'll grudgingly note he's just as callous to poor rural white communities as he is/ would be to poor urban non-white communities. most of his fellow travelers aren't willing apply their contempt equally.

Are there any checks on the president's ability to restructure his cabinet? Like, does Trump really have carte blanche to just install a bunch of dudes who report only to him with no other hierarchy in place?

My biggest takeaway from this debacle is that the executive branch needs a whole fuckton more rules in place.

I'd also like to suggest stricter gun control everywhere except the White House which should have none.

Are there any checks on the president's ability to restructure his cabinet?

Cabinet members have to be confirmed by the Senate, which isn't much of a check at all, but it is at least slightly different from the White House staff where he could basically fire and replace everybody every week if he wanted to. It is at least sort of thinkable that if he appointed someone just wildly unsuitable for a major cabinet seat that the public has heard of, that there could be enough backlash that the nomination would crash and burn (the cabinet equivalent of Harriet Miers), or at least get bogged down past just the point of Senators "having concerns." Given the way health care has played out and where Trump is now, I can almost (but not really) imagine that some of his current cabinet might have hit serious obstacles if he were appointing them now.

The president's power to hire and fire people in the Executive is broad, save for offices that require confirmation.

Recess appointments are A Thing, of course, but the de facto check and balance is that the Congress will be annoyed by being bypassed too often, and will be more likely to consider impeachment as its main instrument of dealing with an out-of-control president.

Fortunately the current occupant is determined to insult everyone in sight - including his own hires; his own appointees; and of course the people who will be judge, jury, and executioners should impeachment come to pass.

I still don't think it's likely, but I do relish the fantasy of everyone whose toes he stepped on during the campaign getting a chance to twist the knife a little. I have no love for Lyin' Ted, Little Marco, or Sen. "I like the guys who don't get captured" McCain, but it would be fun to watch them either gleefully vote for removal, or squirm while they voted against it.
