Still four hours to go, but did he not do anything bizarre today? Did he actually rest on the seventh day? Shouldn't he be attacking Adrian Beltre on Twitter or something?

― clemenza

adrian beltre is an asshole for telling robert fripp he can't play "thela hun ginjeet" live with king crimson

Ha! You're thinking of Adrian Belew. The original poster was referencing the guy from "T.J. Hooker", is what I believe.

Not sure if one or both of you guys is joking or not--if not, we're working up an Abbott & Costello routine here.

Maybe he went to get a sideways haircut? Maybe he went to get a striped shirt? Maybe he went to get some plastic shoes? Maybe he went to get some funny sunglasses?

Williamson openly is pitiless about said communities, pretty much saying underwater towns like that should die off and people should move.

Ed Burmila's been saying this from an explicitly left-wing perspective for a while now as well.

http://www.ginandtacos.com/2016/11/20/the-next-best-thing/

Apparently he's also the kind of guy who thinks parentheticals like this are compliments to women:

a) I'm not sure he does, and b) considering that he's discussing people who go along to viewings of Glengarry Glen Ross to shout along with Alex Baldwin's character, I'd say that it is!

Speaking of which, getting literally in someone's face is very on-brand for Chris Christie of a few years ago.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 31 July 2017 04:43 (six years ago) link

So what's the "correct" answer to Burmilla's essay?

I love the idea that Putin deviously pushed for a president Trump, and yet his apparently pervasive and powerful intelligence services still fell short of indicating what an incompetent president Trump would be.

By the way, anyone else see the Fortune estimate that Putin is worth more than Bezos and Gates combined? Clearly more kids should start going to oligarch camp over coding camp.

i can't imagine purin would be terribly surprised that trump would be a bumbling cretin as president, nor really concerned that his presidency has been less productive than a monkey fucking a football - surely his overall aim was to destablise the us? and uh mission accomplished btw

Can Trump get rid of Pence if GOP begin to consider impeachmeant?

Frederik B, Monday, 31 July 2017 14:24 (six years ago) link

Nope.

On a related note, TV commentator said that Trump was Pence's "boss," which is not how the veep position is spelled out by the Constitution.

The vice president doesn't work for the president; until forty-five years ago he didn't even have a White House office. His job is to wait for the president to die.

Are there any checks on the president's ability to restructure his cabinet? Like, does Trump really have carte blanche to just install a bunch of dudes who report only to him with no other hierarchy in place?

My biggest takeaway from this debacle is that the executive branch needs a whole fuckton more rules in place.

Are there any checks on the president's ability to restructure his cabinet?

Cabinet members have to be confirmed by the Senate, which isn't much of a check at all, but it is at least slightly different from the White House staff where he could basically fire and replace everybody every week if he wanted to. It is at least sort of thinkable that if he appointed someone just wildly unsuitable for a major cabinet seat that the public has heard of, that there could be enough backlash that the nomination would crash and burn (the cabinet equivalent of Harriet Miers), or at least get bogged down past just the point of Senators "having concerns." Given the way health care has played out and where Trump is now, I can almost (but not really) imagine that some of his current cabinet might have hit serious obstacles if he were appointing them now.

The president's power to hire and fire people in the Executive is broad, save for offices that require confirmation.

Recess appointments are A Thing, of course, but the de facto check and balance is that the Congress will be annoyed by being bypassed too often, and will be more likely to consider impeachment as its main instrument of dealing with an out-of-control president.

Fortunately the current occupant is determined to insult everyone in sight - including his own hires; his own appointees; and of course the people who will be judge, jury, and executioners should impeachment come to pass.

I still don't think it's likely, but I do relish the fantasy of everyone whose toes he stepped on during the campaign getting a chance to twist the knife a little. I have no love for Lyin' Ted, Little Marco, or Sen. "I like the guys who don't get captured" McCain, but it would be fun to watch them either gleefully vote for removal, or squirm while they voted against it.

okapi paste (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 31 July 2017 15:19 (six years ago) link

cruz would be delighted to vote against it, and without a squirm in sight - great opportunity to make up a random supposed principle of american constitutionalism and grandstand on his deeply felt, lifelong belief in it.

usually the methodology for their vote is:

Are liberals whining?
Are minorities and women upset?
Are Christians getting unnecessary deference on everything?

If yes to all three, vote approve

i can't boggle at that proportion, i've read too many comments sections. and Trump's (stated) core beliefs are really not far off from the usual Republican agenda, and even closer to the usual unspoken Republican agenda.

Lots of supporters won't bother to question their presumptions of competence/leadership until they're personally effected. Their premiums continue rising, they lose their ACA subsidized insurance, their retirement account takes a plunge, they lose their job, their kid dies in an unnecessary war. There's a disheartening number who never see news from non-partisan sources.

Nixon's approval rating, in an era when news was less-partisan, was 24% on the day he left office. Unless Trump was caught with underaged prostitutes, I don't think we're going to see sub 28-30.
