There was a Spy piece some years ago in which the author managed to get several people in Congress to comment forcefully on the civil war in Freedonia or some such.

Posing as the host of a New York radio talk show, Spy's staff called about 20 first-term House members and, after a series of innocuous questions, asked, "Do you approve of what we're doing to stop what's going on in Freedonia?" or "Do you approve of what we're doing to stop ethnic cleansing in Freedonia?"

The responses, apparently based on the assumption that the questioner was asking about Bosnia, came readily.

Representative Corrine Brown, Democrat of Florida, said she approved of what the United States was doing in Freedonia, and added, "I think all of those situations are very, very sad, and I just think we need to take action to assist the people."

Representative Jay Inslee, Democrat of Washington, was candid. "I have to be honest with you, I'm not familiar with that proposal," he said. "But it's coming to the point now that a blind eye to it for the next 10 years is not the answer."

Representatative Steve Buyer, Republican of Indiana, said, "Yeah, it's a different situation than the Middle East."

Spy's national editor, Jamie Malanowski, characterized the responses as "completely understandable."

"In campaigning," he said of the lawmakers, "they are asked a lot of dumb questions, and they are all used to supplying answers."

it would be rad if we could have a nomination process that didn't involve poisoning the well three years in advance for people who haven't even declared their intentions. If she decides to run, I'm perfectly happy to weigh the merits of Kamala Harris against other candidates who have also decided to run, and then select the person I like best in the primary and hope they win the nomination, but then no matter who actually wins the nomination I will almost definitely vote for the Democrat because I don't want four more fucking years of Trump or Pence or Ivanka or Ben Sasse or whoever the fuck those assholes end up settling on. but no, let's go ahead and draw our lines in the sand now so we can make good and certain that whoever gets the nod for the Dems in 2020, turnout will be sufficiently depressed that we can get a full eight years of this good stuff we've been getting for the past six months.

I've never seen even a fictional depiction of anyone who acted so consistently guilty as Trump does wrt the Russian allegations. And he almost certainly has no idea of how guilty his own actions have made him look, completely independent of any other evidence.
