Are any of the other lefty podcasts funny? For serious takes I'd rather just read, given the 'radio' talent of most podcasters.

The Dollop is my second fave probably though it's a very different beast

chuck is kinda funny on This Is Hell, but it's not 'comedy'

flippy bard (Will M.), Monday, 14 August 2017 19:54 (six years ago) link

is streetfight radio good?

gbx, Monday, 14 August 2017 20:05 (six years ago) link

that pic is Harlan Hill, dweeb who most recently tweeted a picture of a mushroom cloud captioned 'North Korea must be EXTERMINATED!'

global tetrahedron, Monday, 14 August 2017 20:08 (six years ago) link

been meaning to check This Is Hell

Streetfight is kind of rambling and a little silly but the hosts are very likeable and there is some gold here and there. i usually just tune in when i'm caught up with everything else. and i'll prob make a point to catch them live when they come through town.

Depending on your opinion of Matt Taibbi and Alex Pareene, there's the Tarfu Report. The most recent ep with David Rees was pretty good.

There's Jeb Lund's This Week in Atrocity who had on Paul F Tompkins a few days ago, where Paul was talking political stuff in a way he never usually does

Jackson Galactic Brain Meme (kingfish), Monday, 14 August 2017 20:23 (six years ago) link

I found that boring tbh, he's just a typical "trump is bad" lib really

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 14 August 2017 20:24 (six years ago) link

Amber's NPR voice interviewing the French guy is hilarious, given how often her appearances are stoned+crass.

louie mensch (milo z), Monday, 14 August 2017 21:33 (six years ago) link

I enjoyed the fact that she led the episode, especially as she's the only one who can pronounce anything in French at all

weird that the NK must be exterminated guy looks just like a wite kim jong un

Latest premium ep was posted to the public feed, and it's a doozy, talking to Shuja Haider about Charlottesville

Mande ep was slight but fun. I gather Leslie Lee III is on this week.

did we acknowledge anywhere on ILX the whole Freddy DeBoer situation this week

Tarly Noise (El Tomboto), Thursday, 24 August 2017 00:23 (six years ago) link

deboer being a total nightmare person didn't surprise me in particular

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 August 2017 00:24 (six years ago) link

what happened? saw aftermath but couldn't piece it together. seems he had a mental break of some kind?

global tetrahedron, Thursday, 24 August 2017 00:25 (six years ago) link

yeah i only was vaguely aware of whatever it was, what happened

flappy bird, Thursday, 24 August 2017 00:30 (six years ago) link

this was sort of illuminating but i still don't get what happened: https://www.reddit.com/r/ChapoTrapHouse/comments/6uokm9/can_someone_explain_all_the_leftist_twitter_drama/

more or less:

Freddie accused someone from Viewpoint Mag of date rape. Then a bunch of people started dragging on Amber, Angela Nagle, and Zero Books for their takes on antifa . And Katie Harper ranted for hours....

flappy bird, Thursday, 24 August 2017 00:43 (six years ago) link

Deboer got into a tiff with Malcom Harris after Harris retweeted a link to an article criticizing Deboer and some other writers. Deboer flipped out and baselessly accused Harris of rape then deleted all of his tweets. He subsequently wrote a blog post announcing that he was leaving social media and getting help for his mental health problems. He did not apologize for the accusations.

The Marmadook (latebloomer), Thursday, 24 August 2017 00:43 (six years ago) link

X-post

The Marmadook (latebloomer), Thursday, 24 August 2017 00:44 (six years ago) link

this is callous but i don't really buy deBoer's mental illness thing, he's just an angry self-righteous dick. like he didn't even apologize to malcolm harris or retract his accusation

flopson, Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:05 (six years ago) link

so not gonna happen

Looool

flopson, Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:05 (six years ago) link

xp- like if you baselessly slimed someone in a manic episode, wouldn't you retract the accusation once you'd calmed down?

flopson, Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:08 (six years ago) link

when Sady Doyle is asking for folks to lay off BONERS while he's seeking inpatient care, I'm inclined to buy in. There was also some decent back-and-forth in the comments on this LGM thread re: asshole behavior and mental illness: http://www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2017/08/on-freddie

Tarly Noise (El Tomboto), Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:12 (six years ago) link

He can be mentally ill AND a self-righteous dick

louie mensch (milo z), Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:17 (six years ago) link

Maybe he believes what he said about Malcolm Harris and only acknowledges that, in the absence of proof, it was inappropriate for him to talk about it. He must have been referring to a specific incident

Treeship, Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:22 (six years ago) link

Also Freddie DeBoer, Amber A'Lee Frost, and Angela Nagle are all much more interesting than Malcolm Harris.

Treeship, Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:24 (six years ago) link

Oh god

Tarly Noise (El Tomboto), Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:34 (six years ago) link

Freddie DeBoer is not interesting.

JoeStork, Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:34 (six years ago) link

yeah hey speaking of which i saw Angela Nagle get a lot of heat on left twitter about her book, wtf was that all about? she's giving a platform to fascism by writing about it? that's ridiculous. i was just disappointed that the book was so short & full of typos as someone pointed out way upthread. i remember someone called her transphobic - what?

flappy bird, Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:37 (six years ago) link

The typos were apparently due to the initial run going out with the wrong copy or some such, it was fixed after the first 5000 or something.

I would think the line against Nagle is her stance against no-platforming, which tbh I think is fairly argued on her part

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:47 (six years ago) link

gotcha

flappy bird, Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:50 (six years ago) link

People also seemed object to her dispassioante analysis of the factors that contributed to the rise of the alt right, claiming that she "blamed" the excesses of the social justice left for them and things like that

Treeship, Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:55 (six years ago) link

I don't buy that either tbh

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:56 (six years ago) link

Me neither. I liked the book a lot.

Treeship, Thursday, 24 August 2017 01:58 (six years ago) link

Also Freddie DeBoer, Amber A'Lee Frost, and Angela Nagle are all much more interesting than Malcolm Harris.

i don't even like Malcolm Harris, but i felt bad for him. especially hypocritical of FdB, who has written this type of shpiel a million times:

I read about the PWR BTTM accusations. They’re disturbing. I take them seriously. But these guys have had their careers erased overnight, and the idea that we have any responsibility to give them the chance to defend themselves is treated like you took part in their alleged crimes. You simply cannot say, in polite society, “basic fairness requires us to avoid a rush to judgment and to give people the right to respond to accusations.” To do so gets you lumped in with the criminals. Like a friend of mine said, “the only acceptable reaction to an accusation is enthusiastic and unqualified acceptance."

to have lobbed that at him

flopson, Thursday, 24 August 2017 03:47 (six years ago) link

I believe I saw Leslie Lee III have a twitter exchange w Keith Ellison actually July 2016 sometime. I forget how it started but Ellison tried to convince him to vote for Hillary, reminding him that the Supreme Court was a thing, to no avail of course he voted for Stein ultimately.

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Thursday, 24 August 2017 06:01 (six years ago) link

Lmao so angela nagle is a Spiked writer who done played everyone- most spectacularly Mr Chapo, although perhaps there's a slight excuse with them being American and not picking up on some British Isles nuances.

My favourite bit is when she sneers at young women who claim to have ptsd despite not having been in a war- gee, I can't think of any highly traumatic experience frequently suffered by young women, drawing a complete blank here, they must just be hysterical hypochondriacs.

Angela nagl, basically

The Adventures Of Whiteman (Bananaman Begins), Thursday, 24 August 2017 06:25 (six years ago) link

Also (and just jotting notes here really) broader issue of right wingers both fetishising military and police and at the same time making ridicule of ptsd a cornerstone of their rhetoric- <puzzled face emoji>

qualx, Thursday, 24 August 2017 06:45 (six years ago) link

I haven't taken issue with anything any of the main dry folk have said save Felix.

I have no idea what this Nagle stuff is about.
