I do work with an Italian woman but I don't think I could broach the subject without getting a 70s sitcom style slap across the chops... she's an old fashioned girl.

Hoffenheim's set piece delivery was great, yet we had the better chances from set pieces. Should've won that 0-3 at least.

Sanchez to Spurs seems like a done deal

(fact that this news got out while Ajax were embarrassing against Rosenborg is v satisfying)

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 17 August 2017 20:44 (six years ago) link

what's your opinion of him?

He's obviously got the physical attributes but I thought he was all over the place positionally (although he had the pace to bail him out) and passing-wise in the EL Final. Utd basically let him have the ball all game long

was much more impressed by de Lijt tbh

Number None, Thursday, 17 August 2017 20:48 (six years ago) link

He's the best defender of the league, but that doesn't mean a whole lot when transfered to the PL. Tbf to the lad, all of Ajax were outplayed in the EL final. But he's had a very good season (his first here), and I do think he can get a lot better, too.

De Ligt is a good prospect but on the whole he's just too young (18) for a step up. He's had numerous slip-ups. He's allowed to imo at his age, but there's no way he'd be of any use to any PL club right now.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 17 August 2017 21:02 (six years ago) link

Sanchez should be ready to play from the start for Spurs I mean, think he'll do well. Plus he adapted to a new continent really fast.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 17 August 2017 21:03 (six years ago) link

This is good news

jk rowling obituary thread (darraghmac), Thursday, 17 August 2017 21:40 (six years ago) link

johnny evans to city for 27.5m?

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 18 August 2017 15:28 (six years ago) link

Nothing about that makes any sense at all. Also the fact that West Brom are apparently willing to drop £15m on Kevin Wimmer as a replacement.

Matt DC, Friday, 18 August 2017 15:30 (six years ago) link

Guessing they're both dependent on the Sanchez deal going through.

Matt DC, Friday, 18 August 2017 15:31 (six years ago) link

is there anyone worth less than 10m in the league?

john walters went for 3m. i know he's not amazing but it does feel a huge chasm between him and all other deals. how many clubs are going to be bankrupt in about 3 years?

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 18 August 2017 15:32 (six years ago) link

Liverpool reject 114m bid for Coutinho.

If they really won't sell, they won't. But Barca is desperate, with a disastrous start to the season and Neymar-money to burn, but no-one will take it. Liverpool could squeeze 150m out of this if they want.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 18 August 2017 15:35 (six years ago) link

mane is a bigger deal for liverpool than coutinho. but 150m that they can't spend or don't know how to spend is never ever worth it.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 18 August 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link

Otm, I hope he stays, too. It's funny that the outrageous amount paid for Neymar is something Barca can't buy someone for (same with Dembele apparently), unless they slap nearly all of it on the table.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 18 August 2017 15:38 (six years ago) link

barca are on the edge of becoming a bit of a joke, this summer. they are actually desperate to sign anybody, like fucking whoever, just to wave in front of the fans.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 18 August 2017 15:41 (six years ago) link

#supportersinglasshouses

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 18 August 2017 15:42 (six years ago) link

Think Barca becoming a joke is a bit much. They never, ever expected PSG to actually buy out Neymar. No one did. It was an unprecedented move spinning the market out of whack.

It's a beautiful paradox: they can't sign their desired players because they have too much money.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 18 August 2017 15:48 (six years ago) link

it's the same for a bunch of clubs. everyone is so rich that their money is worth less.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 18 August 2017 15:50 (six years ago) link

apparently some clubs believe psg are deliberately bidding way, way above even what's necessary, to squeeze the market, as well as obv for the purpose of getting their targets.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 18 August 2017 15:51 (six years ago) link

Exactly. If the Neymar deal hadn't happened, I'm certain Liverpool would've accepted a 90/100m bid for Coutinho in a heartbeat. xp

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 18 August 2017 15:51 (six years ago) link

i don't think they would have - i'm not even convinced they'll sell him at any price but it's harder to tell.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 18 August 2017 15:56 (six years ago) link

It's guess work. I do think they won't sell him this period.

I'm really curious what will happen with VvD and Soton. Who will win the staring contest?

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 18 August 2017 15:58 (six years ago) link

i doubt he'll go either - they're v determined not to sell and he won't go as far as going on strike or whatever.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 18 August 2017 15:59 (six years ago) link

gbx, Friday, 18 August 2017 17:26 (six years ago) link

Great news on Sanchez.

On a side note, is it easier for footballers to get a work permit these days? Sanchez has only played for Colombia twice and Richarlison has never represented Brazil at senior level.

they changed the permit rules so that if a transfer costs a certain amount of money the player is assumed to be of the quality required to earn a permit.
xps

wmlynch, Friday, 18 August 2017 19:18 (six years ago) link

actually it looks like it changed to a points-based system, and the points are based on the value of the transfer and the wages, etc. upshot is if you pay a lot, you'll almost always get a work permit.
