So you're basically against being against racists?

Frederik B, Friday, 18 August 2017 23:21 (six years ago) link

lot of US Civil War statues where you live in Denmark?

must be nice, living overseas, encouraging roaming bands of people to seek out violence from afar. fuck you.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 18 August 2017 23:23 (six years ago) link

"many people" is doing a lot of work in that tortured, delusional analogy

sleeve, Friday, 18 August 2017 23:25 (six years ago) link

delusion is pretending you are Indiana Jones cos you still can't face the fact that your candidate was a horrible person.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 18 August 2017 23:30 (six years ago) link

Fuck you Adam. Yeah, I think white Americans has a responsibility to protect minorities from armed white nationalists.

Frederik B, Friday, 18 August 2017 23:30 (six years ago) link

Go scream into a cake, you asshole.

Frederik B, Friday, 18 August 2017 23:31 (six years ago) link

lol yeah that totally relates to this discussion, FP

sleeve, Friday, 18 August 2017 23:32 (six years ago) link

(That was an xp, for once Fred and I agree)

sleeve, Friday, 18 August 2017 23:33 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I think white Americans has a responsibility to protect minorities from armed white nationalists.

by bringing in more armed white people who are angry and want to fight?

what if a bystander is injured, what if the now much bigger crowd (counter-protesters usually outnumbering nationalists 2:1) and it overwhelms the police force. this creates a chaotic and dangerous atmosphere in that community. that community btw tends to be largely comprised of the minorities we should be protecting.

let's spend that energy on working towards real systemic change. if we cannot convince the nazis we can convince the Democrats to stand for something real for once and work with these groups to affect real change and promote policies that undo the systemic injustices. this will also give Dems something to run on that will attract third party and non voters, giving us a chance to turn things around in 2018/2020.

let's ask what these protests are trying to accomplish aside from symbolic retribution or media narrative wins. these are temporal, and they are exploitative, cos the media uses these archetypes to divide us, as it is the visual-audio version of the System of Oppression. let's look at non violent solutions is all im saying. the 60s provided some practical system-jamming and media hacking that resulted in major legislation and the start of a lot of good. sit ins were non-violent, bus boycotts were non-violent, on the side of the protesters, not always the side of the system. they used this to their advantage, it exposed the cruelty of a racist system to a national audience via TV. let's eat some cake and come up with a gameplan imo.

lol otm

the Kimmy Schmidt characters were kinda annoying. she rules in pretty much everything she does tho, mad props.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 19 August 2017 00:29 (six years ago) link

Adam people aren't facing state violence (in this instance), they're facing genocidal rhetoric from nationalists who have demonstrated a penchant for violence, and the state has already proven it's not going to step in to protect people. exposing their cruelty does nothing on its own. by all means advocate for legislative change but direct vigilance is also required. there's a handy guide to both from Cville organizers.

Shakey otm upthread. It's amazing how abruptly I've shifted from a lifetime of near-obsession with SNL to not watching or caring about the show at all since Lorne saw fit to normalize the nightmare in the White House.

Quite a journey this thread took from the 'Kristen Wiig--Hot or Not' debate before the jump to the discussion today.

Feygate has taken off on my FB. Not bothered by it as much as it has all been from white people and I haven't seen one person ask a POC for their thoughts and listen yet. :/

Neanderthal, Saturday, 19 August 2017 18:05 (six years ago) link

I don't think anyone has an opinion on Feygate worth listening to

President Keyes, Saturday, 19 August 2017 19:36 (six years ago) link

I disagree - I liked Dan's very much

just caught a rerun of last season's finale ... best episode in years? farting actress skit, erectile dysfunction skit, rap song, Robo-Chomo, WWE promo ... all GREAT. Scorpio, Jurassic Park ride above average. Dwayne is a very good host.

Larry David bombing super hard during the monologue passed through the unfunny event horizon and ended up making me laugh really hard.

Agreed. The early 80s PSAs skit was pretty funny too.

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Sunday, 5 November 2017 13:40 (six years ago) link

The camp joke could have been a classic bit, but the delivery was too low-key even by David's usual standards. The "is it me or the the place" line was good though. He's done the Quadimodo routine before and much better (on Conan I think).

About once a year somebody posts a YT vid on social media of an SNL sketch and is like "I was crying laughing this is incredible" and I click on it and it's always the same try-hard nonsense

this time it was "diner lobster"

i guess i get how someone could have this idea and think "that would be wacky and crazy let's do it" but nobody bothered to make it funny! it's just... "what if we did X but Y?"

maybe i should put this in the unreasonably angry thread because i'm unreasonably angry

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 18 April 2018 14:10 (six years ago) link

I know what you mean

I don't really watch it anymore but I remember thinking "The Barry Gibb Show" was such a hilarious idea. and that Fallon & Timberlake actually pulled it off. Only problem being there were really no jokes in it. Like nearly every single SNL sketch it just culminated in one of the characters yelling at another for no reason.

frogbs, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 14:13 (six years ago) link

The other sketch I saw people sharing this week, "Sitcom Reboot," was actually pretty funny, if (wonder of wonders) a little belabored. In its particulars it reminded me of the much better "Exodus International" sketch from Mr. Show.

Millennial Whoop, wanna fight about it? (Phil D.), Wednesday, 18 April 2018 14:45 (six years ago) link

The cool thing about the Lobster Sketch is that Mulaney has admitted it was an idea that got shot down in 2010, and he just really wanted to do it the one time he had as a host. 'Try-hard nonsense' is right, but it was kinda charming. Sitcom Reboot also an old idea.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 14:47 (six years ago) link

i liked the drag brunch one kinda. mulaney is kinda off-putting to me

flappy bird, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 16:17 (six years ago) link

i guess i like it better as an irritable gesture: "they didn't let me make america sit through this so now i'm gonna make america sit through this goddammit"

pretty much all "gone viral" sketches i see from this show are pretty weak. but this was my favorite show during the Hartman era, and i still enjoy watching sketches featuring the original 7.

mine too. also when i was aged 14 or whatever, the age at which SNL is the best thing ever.

i remember my parents thinking maybe we should change the channel when Phil Hartman was doing Charleton Heston reading Madonna's "Sex". he kept being asked to say the line "I like my vagina" over and over lol

DACA Flocka Flame (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 20 May 2018 15:36 (five years ago) link

I had it on last night while I was doing some mundane paper-worky stuff on my laptop and, aside from the bit at the end of Update where Michael and Colin did the jokes deemed too tasteless for air during the rest of the season, I don't think I looked up once.

DeNiro squinting/staring at the cue cards is expected; DeNiro squinting/staring at the cue cards for a wordless coffee-drinking movement is next level.
