I'm working my way through all the Jazz and Soul records I haven't heard. Fun times!

Kontakte making it in is cool

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 18:43 (six years ago) link

a little surprised that they bothered to acknowledge the Doors s/t but i'm glad they did

i would swap out that mingus piano record for the first small faces record or s.f. sorrow too. but that's just me.

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 18:52 (six years ago) link

(they already have two more mingus on there so he's repped...)

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 18:52 (six years ago) link

never heard that mingus piano record before i dig it

marcos, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 18:57 (six years ago) link

Thinking about the psychedelic music included...

There's maybe a tendency to favor records with some kind of edge. There's no real flower power. The Sonics and not the Seeds, etc.

timellison, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 18:59 (six years ago) link

'Sister Ray' is, and always has been, an absolute waste of time.

― he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Wednesday, August 23, 2017 12:38 PM (one hour ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

it's really good!

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 19:02 (six years ago) link

(I forgot the Donovan record they've got on there.)

timellison, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 19:04 (six years ago) link

Or a tendency to favor experimentalism in say Song Cycle and the United States of America over other psychedelic albums

timellison, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 19:06 (six years ago) link

(Academic experimentalism, more accurately)

timellison, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 19:11 (six years ago) link

Not that I don't like both of those albums, I do. But I also like the Strawberry Alarm Clock.

(I actually prefer the Strawberry Alarm Clock, but I am willing to chalk that up to personal preference. What I'm unwilling to chalk up to personal preference is the idea that Van Dyke Parks or the U.S.A. are in any really obvious way better.)

timellison, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 19:39 (six years ago) link

KLF, kinda bonkers

flappy bird, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 19:40 (six years ago) link

I hadn't listened to SF Sorrow in forever and I did a while back that record is such a psych classic, bonkers like Piper at the Gates of Dawn and (may I say IMHO) better songs

the Bee Gees get no respect

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 19:51 (six years ago) link

country entries also totally pedestrian/predictable apart from the Mickey Newbury

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 19:52 (six years ago) link

is that Lesley Gore album really that good? (not being sarcastic I only know her oldies radio hits)

xpost dunno how you leave Buck Owens off this list

I don't think any of their 60s records are consistently great tbh

what did the p4k equivalents enjoy back in 60s? not this?

A Date With the Everly Bros. is a solid record

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 20:01 (six years ago) link

oh man 60s everly brothers records are so solid. seriously. i've never actually heard a bad record by them. for 60s: It's Everly Time, A Date With The Everly Brothers, The Everly Brothers Sing, Roots.

some of the 60s records are themed . i don't listen to those as much. but they're cool. like the country hits one. and rock 'n' soul. where they do popular songs of the 50s and 60s.

i would say go with Its Everly Time and A Date With...

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 20:53 (six years ago) link

they can be so much fun and then they break your heart. so beautiful. and the production is always amazing.

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 20:54 (six years ago) link

i have a beautiful mono copy of Gone Gone Gone here at the store and I just put it on. I like that record a lot. "Lonely Island" is so beautiful. it's so worth getting clean original mono copies of their early records.

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 21:00 (six years ago) link

i've been playing Phil's Mystic Line record a LOT lately. it fits my mood. but that's 70s.

The real poptimism power move would have been to make the Rhino Girl Groups box number one.

159. Ray Barretto - Acid (1968)

yea baby

flopson, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 23:00 (six years ago) link

"The real poptimism power move would have been to make the Rhino Girl Groups box number one."

"Peanut Duck" alone is better than any Randy Newman album.

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 23:15 (six years ago) link

Newman does have a song on that box as a writer tbf

Many, many xposts - my go to Everly's 60s is Two Yanks in England.

Co-sign the Mingus piano record: it's fantastic.

This 60s list is good. But Mississippi John Hurt "Today" is a huge omission. He is a giant of music that has yet to be discovered by a larger audience.

I think people don't realize how great the first two Joan Baez albums are. I didn't until I bought these beautiful copies of them in a thrift store a couple of years ago.

You said something similar about Grace Slick, I think.

ie we are discussing aesthetics, not politicians and yes I have aesthetic preferences regarding what voices I find pleasant to listen to, regardless of gender. As I'm sure every listener does.

grace slick is awesome. a fierce fiery freedom fighter of a singer. there was nowhere she wouldn't go in her quest for freedom! nowhere!!

scott seward, Thursday, 24 August 2017 17:23 (six years ago) link

goddamn shakey Grace Slick is an incredible singer. i just saw A Serious Man for the first time last night & loved the recurring Jefferson Airplane motif
