A weighted poll would've been interesting to see. I'd like to think spinach would've placed much higher but then 5 people voted mushy peas so I'm kinda losing my grip on reality here.

Sweet potato got a cheat in this poll as well - its in here thrice! AFAIC, sweet potato, yam and kumara are basically the same thing.

Real yams are not widely cultivated outside of Polynesia. All the produce labeled "yams" in grocery stores in the USA are variants of sweet potatoes. The growers petitioned the USDA to call some sweet potato varieties "yams" because they sounded more exotic and sold better.

There are different kinds of yam - the Polynesian one is Purple Yam (which is the one eaten in the West Indies and US iirc). The one eaten in Africa and Europe is White Yam.

They are both "real yams" though, and African yams are produced in much greater quantities than Polynesian yams (according to Wikipedia anyway)

Americans and NZers (and apparently Australians) also call sweet potatoes "yams" which is what Trayce was talking about I guess.

The NZ "yam" sweet potato is called "oca" though - there's an option in the poll "oka" which doesn't seem to exist, so maybe that's an alternate spelling, and so Trayce's point still stands about sweet potato appearing multiple times.

honestly this should have been a ballot poll. potato will reign always in a pick-one poll because potato goes well with practically anything and if you've ever been poor probably you've gone through whole seasons where in the absence of potatoes it would've been super hard times. potato would probably not win a ballot poll because it would be ranked people's third or fourth favorite vegetable but if you ask people to just pick one vegetable then many of them are going to do the reasonable thing and say "yes, asparagus is delicious, and guess what I can't live on for weeks at a time if it comes down to it, asparagus, I'm voting potato, long life to the anti-potato crew but be real"

mushy peas would've stood more of a chance if they'd just joined with their snow pea and mangetout comrades on a pea unity ticket. they all lost out through being divided, no-one likes split peas.

I made some Bombay style potatoes yesterday, they were boiled in their skins, fried in butter with mustard seeds/cumin seeds, garlic, ginger, onions, tomatoes + extra hot Caribbean curry powder + loads of spices etc. Damn, it was so nice I'm doing it again today.

I want to try that. Is there a recipe online you use?

I can't remember what recipe I started with. But I boil some reasonable sized potatoes in their skins for half an hour. Cube them after they have cooled. Fry the Mustard seeds/Cumin seeds in massive slab of butter, then add potatoes, onions and spices. Sorry I'm no good at this! I bet Suzy has a killer recipe.

that sounds more like onions and tomatoes and garlic with potatoes in it.

why don't you try the recipe four more times and leave out a different vegetable each time, then tell us which one seems most crucial.

I suppose it was an attempt. Also add Turmeric, Cayenne Pepper and some ground Cumin. Is what I usually do. And I find going irresponsibly apeshit with the butter makes it much unhealthier and tastier.

i don't know, during my shitty college days when i was learning how to feed myself i pretty much lived on quinoa and lentils, and even though i appreciate those foods and will gladly eat them on occasion to this day, i'm not going to pick them in any poll because 64% of my body was made out of lentils at some point and i've had enough for a lifetime. i imagine those who went the potato route during financial hardships might feel the same way!

i guess this comes down to whether or not we were voting for the one vegetable that we'd want to pick as a practical matter, day-in and day-out, or if we were voting for the vegetable that stands out as especially delicious compared to others for a single meal. like the great ILX reality cooking series, and the special food group for one episode is "vegetable", and you have to choose something from the ingredients in the poll to wow the judges (who, in a cruel twist, is just guy fieri). in that case, even guy fieri is going to be disappointed in "potato" unless you dumb bbq sauce all over it or something
