Yes. It is terrible that people who know The Truth are forced at gunpoint by emotionally weak people to water it down. And this is the 100% honest truth.

This video is becoming a reality day by day ...

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 1 September 2017 18:53 (six years ago) link

someone i thought was a very smart person in grad school posted that. i haven't talked to her directly in several years, although i do follow her on facebook so that i can get a birthday alert every year and look at my phone and say "oh. it's someone's birthday again today." but i didn't even know how to react when she posted that video. like...is that a fucking joke? she believes that? wtf? i guess i should just unfollow but it still seems like it must have been some sort of mistake? it's been shared like 50 million times!!!

Karl Malone, Friday, 1 September 2017 18:59 (six years ago) link

Yes this video is amazingly stupid. It feels like a parody of the intended message. Did lol.

billstevejim, Friday, 1 September 2017 19:24 (six years ago) link

is that video a parody of a parody?

anyway, I laughed, how could I not?

silverfish, Friday, 1 September 2017 19:36 (six years ago) link

is it a parody? that would explain why my friend shared it, i hope.

it actually feels a bit like a bad Key & Peele sketch. I can't figure out if this was intended to mock PC culture or if it was just a satire on what a lot of white people actually believe the world is actually like. its definitely not very funny though.

frogbs, Friday, 1 September 2017 20:00 (six years ago) link

friend of mine just posted this li'l bit of insanity

Let this sink in for a minute.....Hundreds and hundreds of small boats pulled by countless pickups and SUVs from across the South are headed for Houston. Almost all of them driven by men. They're using their own property, sacrificing their own time, spending their own money, and risking their own lives for one reason: to help total strangers in desperate need.

Most of them are by themselves. Most are dressed like the redneck duck hunters and bass fisherman they are. Many are veterans. Most are wearing well-used gimme-hats, t-shirts, and jeans; and there's a preponderance of camo. Most are probably gun owners, and most probably voted for Trump.

These are the people the Left loves to hate, the ones Maddow mocks. The ones Maher and Olbermann just *know* they're so much better than.

These are The Quiet Ones. They don't wear masks and tear down statues. They don't, as a rule, march and demonstrate. And most have probably never been in a Whole Foods.

But they'll spend the next several days wading in cold, dirty water; dodging gators and water moccasins and fire ants; eating whatever meager rations are available; and sleeping wherever they can in dirty, damp clothes. Their reward is the tears and the hugs and the smiles from the terrified people they help. They'll deliver one boatload, and then go back for more.

When disaster strikes, it's what men do. Real men. Heroic men. American men. And then they'll knock back a few shots, or a few beers with like-minded men they've never met before, and talk about fish, or ten-point bucks, or the benefits of hollow-point ammo, or their F-150.

And the next time they hear someone talk about "the patriarchy", or "male privilege", they'll snort, turn off the TV and go to bed.

In the meantime, they'll likely be up again before dawn. To do it again. Until the helpless are rescued. And the work's done.

They're unlikely to be reimbursed. There won't be medals. They won't care. They're heroes. And it's what they do.

cuz what better way to honor an American hero than by politicizing him and using him as an opportunity to take down Rachel Maddow

frogbs, Friday, 1 September 2017 20:03 (six years ago) link

Hundreds and hundreds of small boats pulled by countless pickups and SUVs

Sounds like a very high pickup to boat ratio.

Beer that doesn't taste like real beer is un-American.

billstevejim, Friday, 1 September 2017 23:44 (six years ago) link

That sounds like it's straight out of the Marketing of Masculinity thread.

btw, the biggest reason why most of those boat owners would be duck hunters and bass fisherman isn't because they are real men who knock back shots of whiskey with other real men, but because if you hunt ducks or fish for bass it helps to own a boat, whereas mountain climbers own ropes, harnesses and pitons, and wheat farmers own tractors and combines, which would not be nearly as helpful in a flood.

ahhhh the format on that is awful but the sentiment's not ridiculous imo. "enjoy being single" is a solid message. would be nice to see her more actively pursuing hobbies or a platonic social life but it's a far distance from a lot of the dire retrograde crap we see here.

Yeesh, that video. What side is it actually on? I can't even tell.

There is definitely something about that whole ideal of "college age kids" having that sort of hyper-awareness to buzzwords and cultural/gender/class makeup. My housemate (who is approaching 60; big Trump supporter, Fox News guy) had some friends and neighbors over for dinner last night. One of the guests brought her dog, so I went out in the living room and endured about an hour of how "college is teaching these kids to not have to work for anything and condemn everyone else who offends them by having a different opinion." Was pretty easy to tune out rolling around on the floor playing with the dog, but it's definitely a thing that some people really believe.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 17:19 (six years ago) link

I think the evolution of the modern workforce has left us in a world where most office work is seemingly abstract. If you're used to college, or working retail or in a restaurant, something where there's a physical interaction, it's concrete. College is still somewhat concrete, in that there are papers to write and things to deliver and timelines. But the modern office world, even when there are deliverables, are so often in service of a larger picture that's intangible and unknowable to people working on the pieces.

So many entry level, or even higher level, jobs are close to being call centers or claims processing which seems to have that interaction but it's still disconnected. This is the world that people who are now 60 have progressed through, and unless they're still on the lower end of things or have jobs that still deal with people, they just don't get it. The tasks and places that people entering the work force deal with are just not what an old man yelling at Fox News gets.

The fact kids are trying to get a handle on people, and how the system treats people as individuals, is a big deal, imo!
