also in ball-related indie games, Golf Story is out next month. looks like it's trying to claim the lineage of the gameboy mario golf games (totally classic if you haven't played them) but playing up the RPG element even more

same thing with tennis

mario golf for gameboy color was a perfect golf video game imo - i think its probably in my top 5 games lifetime in # of hours played

i also fucking hate football and yet sensible world of soccer remains the greatest game ever made

there also hasn't been a perfect (or even good?) non-sim baseball game in years and years

i really liked super mega baseball

oh yeah, i got really into that for a while too

and not only do i fucking hate baseball i don't even really understand the rules

ok maybe i will emulate this golf experience

i dunno if it holds up but at the time it was revelatory - a golf game with a bit of actual story/progression and the mechanics were really good for a gameboy game

it's barely even a mario game, it feels like they were making their own golf game and then the mario license fell in their lap somehow and they worked it in. mario doesn't even appear until 80% of the way through the game iirc.

yeah i feel like the sweet spot wld be really good mechanics not too technical in terms of club selection etc and a lot of variation in course design

look keep your talk of 'sweet spots' and 'working it in' out of this family-friendly thread pls

Virtua Tennis on Dreamcast was pretty great.

only 3/4 sarcastically, my recommendation is desert golf

desert golfing is good but its not golf, its desert golfing

i still feel like it somehow nails the mysterious essence of golfing, like when you hit the ball 100 ft past the hole, it bounces onto a backward sloped ridge, careens off of a 50 foot high hoodoo, then slowly rolls into the hole just feet away from an infinite cliff.

see wii sports was so in the right direction but then the actual mechanics were so weirdly like binary and translated instead of being an accurate depiction of what u did w the remote, u cld hit a normal shot or WOW a super shot there were really like five total things u cld do

desert golf is good true

i remember the moment i completely stopped with desert golf. it was abrupt and clear.

ok i reached invisibility king, did my part for the team. i'm really enjoying the splash-o-matic and have no idea why you have to wait until level 25 to get it when its basically just a variant of the gun you get at level 1.

Just saw a squid in the plaza holding a banner that said "Pearl is a Juggalo" which made me laugh. I really like how shady they make Grizzco Enterprises seem, like should I really be working for this company?
There's a demo for Voez up in the eshop with three songs unlocked. I'm not a fan of the music but the presentation and UI is really really nice.

i totally missed out on the splatoon excitement due to getting totally sucked into mario/rabbids, which is way way more fun than any nintendo/ubisoft/xcom mashup has any right to be

Nah there's a rerelease for Xbone and PS4 also. If Switch was thrown in for good measure it's maybe a good sign for portability of AAA engines to the Switch? Idk.

getting impatient for golf story and stardew valley which are both supposed to show up sometime this month i think - have intentionally put off buying stardew on pc since it seems like a perfect switch game

agreed on the single tv household thing. new season of Great british bake off. this will get TV priority. that is fine, i will sit here next to you and play splatoon or mario+rabids. everyone wins.

I find Splatoon difficult to play well on the small screen tbh - some of the visual cues like swimming enemies are too hard to see

Haven't actually watched the video just looked at some recap posts but a bunch of Xenoblade and Mario footage was shown

yeah nothing too groundbreaking. the other big announcement was a square enix retro-ish jrpg (2d characters in 2.5d environments stylized after the old SNES squaresoft games) called octopath - there's already a demo available for it

looks kind of like a paper-mario-ized FF6 visually

most interesting one to me was the arcade Punchout getting released, think this is the first time it's been ported?
