Which political ideologies don't believe that the people are fundamentally with them or would be under the right conditions?

It seems like a necessity to be politically active - if you just think you're going to be forever unpopular and unsupported, why bother?

it's not a question of ideology, it's a question of knowing when you're getting royally screwed.

i disagree- just the right conditions for straussians are "we trick them into doing what we want"

The GOP is literally doing as much as it can to take decision making out of the hands of "the people" as we speak.

The GOP broadly seems dead set in their belief in a silent majority that agrees with them and their vision of the world - part of that worldview is anti-democratic.

otoh you could say they are basically narrowly defining who "the people" are and doing their best to disenfranchise all the volksfremde

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 31 August 2017 16:38 (six years ago) link

_Democracy for Realists_ does a nice summary of what the "people" really think vs what the pollsters/others think they think. I'm sure that book got plenty of good, more informed commentary from ilx but I dint visit that thread/s.

going to guess here: people are dumb and don't vote based on policies/ideology, instead they vote according to their feelings and grievances, even if the things they object to aren't within the purview of the politician they are electing

Still waiting for the book about how technocrats' mistrust of democracy and their Herculean attempts to manage it haven't produced better outcomes.

so matt is in nyc now? not sure how i feel about this.

imo the rest should've moved to Cincy. in fact, things would be much mo betta if all the young socialists would stop congregating in nyc. time to pull an inverse of the NH/ "free state" project and get a gang of freelancers & uber drivers to move to a sparsely populated red state like Wyoming and get 2 dem socialist Senators elected.

I've been enjoying Trillbilly Workers Party a lot lately, sort of a nice midpoint between the lefty smartassery of Chapo and the modest and cozy chillness of Street Fight.

It's pretty much up to third in my list after I run through the week's Chapo and cum town.

Caught angela nagle on a podcast today and I figured she'd elicit hissing from all the right ppl

She came across as having good knowledge of the various but her thesis seemed p underdeveloped, this may well have been a function of keeping it simple for the anchor.

passé aggresif (darraghmac), Sunday, 3 September 2017 21:43 (six years ago) link

I had a similar reaction after reading her piece in the latest Baffler, essentially about the death of civility and manners in the discourse driven by Trump. Probably a 2,000 or 3,000 word piece that felt like bulletpoints, nothing I didn't already know or anything that wasn't already obvious. Reading her, you keep waiting for the deep dig, and it's just cliff notes. I don't get it.

flappy bird, Sunday, 3 September 2017 22:09 (six years ago) link

In fairness I got the impression that she has that deep dive if required but yeah, where is it if so

passé aggresif (darraghmac), Sunday, 3 September 2017 22:17 (six years ago) link

oh yeah I don't think she's a charlatan or a grifter, & this piece wasn't even really the same territory as the book, but the experience reading it was the same. inexplicably skating on the surface

flappy bird, Sunday, 3 September 2017 22:23 (six years ago) link

not sure what I appreciate more, Peter Daou thinking that is a useful metric, or Peter Daou being aware of CTH's existence and caring what they say :)

The accents of the Trillbillies are part of what endears me to them. My mom's side of the family is from Southern Ohio, and it's like hearing my cousins talk about lefty shit
