the Twin Peaks: The Return roadhouse performances poll

It's 'Shadows' for me, solely because it embodies the whole TP feel and geist, to near perfection imo. Looking at the list I'm surprised half of it is pretty alright; watching during the season the performances made me feel more and more weary.

I probably disliked Hudson Mo's one the most.

I didn't like all the artists but I loved the idea of taking time out of the 18 episodes for these performances. It was like David Lynch booking SNL.

Toss up between that and "Shadow"

hudmo sucked. the rest of these are variously terrific

xps Yeah and all the variations on it were really cleverly done, patterns kept getting established & subverted ito the point in the episode where the cut to the roadhouse would happen, whether the announcer would be there, whether there would be an accompanying scene... there was just a great cumulative effect.

(This is partly why I think booker t and zz top should have been included, they're part of the "and now, tonight's musical guest" thread)

The languidity of the opening theme/credits ushered me into this dreamworld every week, like a hypnotic trance re-induction cue, and a roadhouse performance ushered me out. Snap! You're awake.

Cactus Blossoms, for the thrill of seeing a local (for me) band on the Twin Peaks stage

voted NIN as the killer prelude to that EP8 sequence. Twin Peaks was always industrial (the saw blades at the intro) so this made me so happy to see.

"Snake Eyes", with "No Stars" a close second, and "Just You" third for the announcer giving me the chills when he introduced James.

I voted for Sharon Van Etten just because I really lover her and I love that song, though I don't know if it was the 'best' one of these. I actually really liked the Trouble performance, and the song fit the series; it was like getting Thought Gang back

yeah that was a surprise, I don't care for most of the Veils stuff but that song was awesome and I liked the 'performance' of it as well.

Audrey's dance. Found most of the performances underwhelming, even if by artists I like. Like the Chromatics song fit but it's one of their weakest songs in their catalog

I still can't believe Charlene Yi had one of the maybe 10 best sequences of the entire series

Honestly it's sad that Cruise probably won't win, due to the quick cut of her performance

The Nine Inch Nails. Not my favorite song, but it was the perfect setup for the rest of 8.

xp I don't think the (huge) impact of that song would have been greater if it had gone on for longer

But it's an old song and (rightly) not really recontextualised the way just you and Audrey's dance were, so it makes sense that people pass over it in a poll like this

hell yeah brother, was my second choice

I'm leaning towards Lark right now, it really ties a nice bow around the first four episodes. Like those first four episodes are so bewildering, you get through them all and you have no idea where the show is going to go, and then that song comes on and it's so pleasant. it really captures this feeling that the plot is starting to form and the rest of the show is gonna be one long strange dreamy ride. I also like how they're stylish in a lynchian way but it doesn't feel like they're "trying" to put on an image (i.e. chromatics, who i love but of course they're in this thing)

it's amazing how a vote's been guaranteed for all but 3 performances here, and there's no way No Stars isn't getting a vote. Heck it's my second choice right now.

well maybe not guaranteed, but there's a lot of love to go around for all of these. except hudmo. poor hudmo. I contemplated combining his performance with au revoir simone's in part 9 but then anyone who just liked the simone song wouldn't dare vote for it

I've had sharp dressed man stuck in my head since the episode aired.

I loved the HudMo for showing that there are support bands in the nu-Roadhouse universe

my unborn child first discernibly kicked during the nine inch nails performance (and kicked like crazy during the same song when we saw them at webster hall a few weeks later). so the nin it is.

i didn't hate any of the songs. the lissie song felt a little out of context with the rest of the music, and i'm not a big vedder/pearl jam fan but i thought his song was fine. the sharon van etten song is the only one i have no memory of at all.

Different strokes I guess. They could have had Donna and Bobby reprise their weeping, too, as a recording from the 90s played out, but it's hard to see what that would add - the way they went was purposeful and effective, and we can all still play our old CDs.

I definitely would have liked it longer though not necessarily the whole song.

It was Chromatics who played the backing band for Cruise and in fact played live with her. I think maybe one of the issues was that they wound up using the original recording instead of what was played. Who knows why. Jonny Jewel said in a P4k interview that they practiced it over and over; and they did one take, then Lynch whispered something to her, and he didn't know what it was, and it completely changed the performance and the second one was amazing. Clearly that wasn't what was used in the end.
