xp I don't think the (huge) impact of that song would have been greater if it had gone on for longer

streeps of range (wins), Saturday, 9 September 2017 20:42 (six years ago) link

But it's an old song and (rightly) not really recontextualised the way just you and Audrey's dance were, so it makes sense that people pass over it in a poll like this

streeps of range (wins), Saturday, 9 September 2017 20:46 (six years ago) link

I voted for James I'm not ashamed

ein Sexmonster (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Sunday, 10 September 2017 03:15 (six years ago) link

hell yeah brother, was my second choice

flappy bird, Sunday, 10 September 2017 04:43 (six years ago) link

I'm leaning towards Lark right now, it really ties a nice bow around the first four episodes. Like those first four episodes are so bewildering, you get through them all and you have no idea where the show is going to go, and then that song comes on and it's so pleasant. it really captures this feeling that the plot is starting to form and the rest of the show is gonna be one long strange dreamy ride. I also like how they're stylish in a lynchian way but it doesn't feel like they're "trying" to put on an image (i.e. chromatics, who i love but of course they're in this thing)

it's amazing how a vote's been guaranteed for all but 3 performances here, and there's no way No Stars isn't getting a vote. Heck it's my second choice right now.

josh az (2011nostalgia), Sunday, 10 September 2017 05:21 (six years ago) link

well maybe not guaranteed, but there's a lot of love to go around for all of these. except hudmo. poor hudmo. I contemplated combining his performance with au revoir simone's in part 9 but then anyone who just liked the simone song wouldn't dare vote for it

josh az (2011nostalgia), Sunday, 10 September 2017 05:23 (six years ago) link

I've had sharp dressed man stuck in my head since the episode aired.

cosmic brain dildo (Sparkle Motion), Sunday, 10 September 2017 06:07 (six years ago) link

I loved the HudMo for showing that there are support bands in the nu-Roadhouse universe

shackling the masses with plastic-wrapped snack picks (sic), Sunday, 10 September 2017 06:24 (six years ago) link

and ppl still talk through them

shackling the masses with plastic-wrapped snack picks (sic), Sunday, 10 September 2017 06:25 (six years ago) link

Axolotl was possibly the single worst thing I've ever seen. That band annoys me anyway, but jfc

albvivertine, Sunday, 10 September 2017 06:41 (six years ago) link

Anyway, probably not voting for them

albvivertine, Sunday, 10 September 2017 06:42 (six years ago) link

otm, axolotl was the absolute lowest point

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 10 September 2017 09:47 (six years ago) link

• None of the above.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 10 September 2017 13:04 (six years ago) link

sad that xiu xiu didn't get their rightful spot in the roadhouse but at least we have this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SG6yDSbtxU

my unborn child first discernibly kicked during the nine inch nails performance (and kicked like crazy during the same song when we saw them at webster hall a few weeks later). so the nin it is.

adam, Sunday, 10 September 2017 15:16 (six years ago) link

that rules

flappy bird, Sunday, 10 September 2017 15:39 (six years ago) link

The roadhouse is proud to welcome

streeps of range (wins), Sunday, 10 September 2017 15:44 (six years ago) link

not sure why people have a visceral bad reaction to that Veils song.

who is going to stand up for Lissie - Wild West? NOT ME that was fucking terrible.

akm, Sunday, 10 September 2017 21:03 (six years ago) link

the absolute nadir and low point of the Return IMO

akm, Sunday, 10 September 2017 21:03 (six years ago) link

(except for maybe Leaving Las Vegas)

akm, Sunday, 10 September 2017 21:03 (six years ago) link

eh on rewatch i suddenly really liked the lissie song

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 September 2017 21:17 (six years ago) link

I thought the Veils song was great.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 10 September 2017 21:42 (six years ago) link

akm otm ftw

attention vampire (MatthewK), Sunday, 10 September 2017 21:49 (six years ago) link

voting 'shadow', just ahead of nin for me

nxd, Monday, 11 September 2017 09:13 (six years ago) link

i didn't hate any of the songs. the lissie song felt a little out of context with the rest of the music, and i'm not a big vedder/pearl jam fan but i thought his song was fine. the sharon van etten song is the only one i have no memory of at all.

na (NA), Monday, 11 September 2017 15:30 (six years ago) link

i'm actually going to vote for the sharon van etten song, it's so gorgeous

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 September 2017 18:39 (six years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

regret voting for NIN instead of James

flappy bird, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 03:52 (six years ago) link

don't regret it, you made the right choice

Moodles, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 04:02 (six years ago) link

plot twist: james actually wins the poll

no spoilers

mh, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 17:06 (six years ago) link

I voted for James

good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 17:07 (six years ago) link

Fuck it, I'm voting for Lissie. Haters gonna hate.

josh az (2011nostalgia), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 20:02 (six years ago) link

that song rules. speak your truth

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 20:03 (six years ago) link

Lissie annoyed me a lot less than Au Revoir Simone

Brad C., Wednesday, 20 September 2017 20:04 (six years ago) link

C'mon, Au Rev Sim were the counterparts of Candy and the casino girls, absolutely perfect. If I'm honest the most annoying artist was Julee Cruise - felt that way in 1991 and still feel it in 2017.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:13 (six years ago) link

These takes are so foreign to me I hardly know how to approach them

good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:26 (six years ago) link

Julee Cruise did seem shoehorned in unfortunately

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:29 (six years ago) link

as opposed to the rest of the musical performances?

Number None, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:31 (six years ago) link

Really? Felt to me like a very deliberate return to the emotional space of the end of episode 14 xp

good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:31 (six years ago) link

Although exponents of the sync theory point to the use of that song as an example of a happy ending lol

good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:32 (six years ago) link

*proponents I'm losing it

good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:36 (six years ago) link

well i mean it was like really short and a weird ass part of the song she barely sings

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:41 (six years ago) link

That's precisely it for me. It's a replay of maddie's murder (in that Cooper has gravely failed and is deeply confounded) but this time we don't get to luxuriate in the sadness. It's a great setup for part 18 imo

good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:52 (six years ago) link

Yah it totally worked, but I have no doubt in my mind it took A LOT of fiddling to make it work lol

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:00 (six years ago) link

yeah they didn't spend enough time on her performance. I don't know why. She blew her top when that aired on FB but then claimed it wasn't because of the shortened length. I'm still not sure what she was mad about if it wasn't that. That scene has a lot of emotional resonance in the original series; and here, it seemed superfluous. Maybe that was the intention though, like so many other semi-fan-servicey bits.

akm, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:00 (six years ago) link

It really increased the sadness and eventual gut punch for me.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:07 (six years ago) link

Yeah totally. I'm trying to imagine that scene in the forest fading into a 5-minute roadhouse performance and people thinking that was better than what we got

good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:09 (six years ago) link

it would have been 2 to three minutes better

akm, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:22 (six years ago) link

Different strokes I guess. They could have had Donna and Bobby reprise their weeping, too, as a recording from the 90s played out, but it's hard to see what that would add - the way they went was purposeful and effective, and we can all still play our old CDs.

baffles me that Beach House weren’t among these performances

the Broadcast poll had me thinking how they would’ve been a great fit, not necessarily on the stage performance section, but doing whatever Lynch was doing for his sound editing.

the breakdown in the chromatics song "shadow" has a brief moment that directly rips off the verse melody of "wish fulfillment" by sonic youth

when I first saw that episode there was a moment where I thought it might be a cover
