Axolotl was possibly the single worst thing I've ever seen. That band annoys me anyway, but jfc

Anyway, probably not voting for them
― albvivertine, Sunday, 10 September 2017 06:42 (six years ago) link
otm, axolotl was the absolute lowest point

sad that xiu xiu didn't get their rightful spot in the roadhouse but at least we have this

my unborn child first discernibly kicked during the nine inch nails performance (and kicked like crazy during the same song when we saw them at webster hall a few weeks later). so the nin it is.

that rules

not sure why people have a visceral bad reaction to that Veils song.
who is going to stand up for Lissie - Wild West? NOT ME that was fucking terrible.
― akm, Sunday, 10 September 2017 21:03 (six years ago) link
the absolute nadir and low point of the Return IMO
(except for maybe Leaving Las Vegas)
eh on rewatch i suddenly really liked the lissie song
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 September 2017 21:17 (six years ago) link
I thought the Veils song was great.

akm otm ftw

voting 'shadow', just ahead of nin for me
― nxd, Monday, 11 September 2017 09:13 (six years ago) link
i didn't hate any of the songs. the lissie song felt a little out of context with the rest of the music, and i'm not a big vedder/pearl jam fan but i thought his song was fine. the sharon van etten song is the only one i have no memory of at all.
― na (NA), Monday, 11 September 2017 15:30 (six years ago) link
i'm actually going to vote for the sharon van etten song, it's so gorgeous

that song rules. speak your truth

Lissie annoyed me a lot less than Au Revoir Simone
― Brad C., Wednesday, 20 September 2017 20:04 (six years ago) link
C'mon, Au Rev Sim were the counterparts of Candy and the casino girls, absolutely perfect. If I'm honest the most annoying artist was Julee Cruise - felt that way in 1991 and still feel it in 2017.
― attention vampire (MatthewK), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:13 (six years ago) link
These takes are so foreign to me I hardly know how to approach them
― good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:26 (six years ago) link
Julee Cruise did seem shoehorned in unfortunately
― kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:29 (six years ago) link
as opposed to the rest of the musical performances?
― Number None, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:31 (six years ago) link
Really? Felt to me like a very deliberate return to the emotional space of the end of episode 14 xp
― good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:31 (six years ago) link
Although exponents of the sync theory point to the use of that song as an example of a happy ending lol
― good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:32 (six years ago) link
*proponents I'm losing it
― good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:36 (six years ago) link
well i mean it was like really short and a weird ass part of the song she barely sings
― kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:41 (six years ago) link
That's precisely it for me. It's a replay of maddie's murder (in that Cooper has gravely failed and is deeply confounded) but this time we don't get to luxuriate in the sadness. It's a great setup for part 18 imo
― good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:52 (six years ago) link
Yah it totally worked, but I have no doubt in my mind it took A LOT of fiddling to make it work lol
― kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:00 (six years ago) link
yeah they didn't spend enough time on her performance. I don't know why. She blew her top when that aired on FB but then claimed it wasn't because of the shortened length. I'm still not sure what she was mad about if it wasn't that. That scene has a lot of emotional resonance in the original series; and here, it seemed superfluous. Maybe that was the intention though, like so many other semi-fan-servicey bits.
― akm, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:00 (six years ago) link
It really increased the sadness and eventual gut punch for me.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:07 (six years ago) link
Yeah totally. I'm trying to imagine that scene in the forest fading into a 5-minute roadhouse performance and people thinking that was better than what we got
― good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:09 (six years ago) link
it would have been 2 to three minutes better
― akm, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:22 (six years ago) link
Different strokes I guess. They could have had Donna and Bobby reprise their weeping, too, as a recording from the 90s played out, but it's hard to see what that would add - the way they went was purposeful and effective, and we can all still play our old CDs.
― good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:38 (six years ago) link
I definitely would have liked it longer though not necessarily the whole song.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.
― System, Thursday, 21 September 2017 00:01 (six years ago) link
wins - the band that played her backing band (was it veils) did that interview about meticulously learning the song and playing it live over and over and then it was just the a short snippet of the performance that barely featured any julie and it was the recorded track from the 90s! obvs there was something up. maybe that clouds the scene for me.
― kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 21 September 2017 00:09 (six years ago) link
yeah Cruise went off on FB about "the cult" of Lynch. it's a bummer. reminded me of the Michael J. Anderson stuff. and Sherilyn's tweet...
― flappy bird, Thursday, 21 September 2017 00:44 (six years ago) link
Do you have a link to this? I saw cruise's SABRINA SUTHERLAND DISRESPECTED ME rant but I'm not so interested in stuff like that
Good results btw, although I thought the other chromatics and au revoir songs would get a vote
― good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Thursday, 21 September 2017 10:08 (six years ago) link
It's fair to assume, if this poll wasn't Roadhouse specific, that Harry Dean Stanton would've won in a landslide, yes?

― Michael Jones, Thursday, 21 September 2017 13:23 (six years ago) link
the Broadcast poll had me thinking how they would’ve been a great fit, not necessarily on the stage performance section, but doing whatever Lynch was doing for his sound editing.

the breakdown in the chromatics song "shadow" has a brief moment that directly rips off the verse melody of "wish fulfillment" by sonic youth
