Nah there's a rerelease for Xbone and PS4 also. If Switch was thrown in for good measure it's maybe a good sign for portability of AAA engines to the Switch? Idk.

getting impatient for golf story and stardew valley which are both supposed to show up sometime this month i think - have intentionally put off buying stardew on pc since it seems like a perfect switch game

ciderpress, Sunday, 10 September 2017 14:23 (six years ago) link

agreed on the single tv household thing. new season of Great british bake off. this will get TV priority. that is fine, i will sit here next to you and play splatoon or mario+rabids. everyone wins.

jamiesummerz, Monday, 11 September 2017 11:13 (six years ago) link

I find Splatoon difficult to play well on the small screen tbh - some of the visual cues like swimming enemies are too hard to see

45 minutes Nintendo Direct coming wednesday night. Get on the hype/mild disappoint train

jamiesummerz, Monday, 11 September 2017 15:06 (six years ago) link

is anything new expected or just more hyping up their fall releases? they don't usually make big announcements via direct

ciderpress, Monday, 11 September 2017 15:09 (six years ago) link

Some of the announcements from the Direct:

Last year's new Doom coming to Switch before holiday, this year's new Wolfenstein coming next year sometime.
Kirby: Star Allies is the Switch Kirby title, out Spring '18
"Arcade Archives" coming (Arcade versions of Mario Bros, Ice Climber, Balloon Fight…)
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 out December 1

Haven't actually watched the video just looked at some recap posts but a bunch of Xenoblade and Mario footage was shown

.oO (silby), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 23:47 (six years ago) link

yeah nothing too groundbreaking. the other big announcement was a square enix retro-ish jrpg (2d characters in 2.5d environments stylized after the old SNES squaresoft games) called octopath - there's already a demo available for it

ciderpress, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 23:51 (six years ago) link

looks kind of like a paper-mario-ized FF6 visually

ciderpress, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 23:53 (six years ago) link

most interesting one to me was the arcade Punchout getting released, think this is the first time it's been ported?

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 23:54 (six years ago) link

I think the Doom and Wolfenstein announcements are interesting business-wise. These are AAA, current gen, third-party, rated-M games of the kind that the last three Nintendo home consoles have seen vanishingly little of.

.oO (silby), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 23:57 (six years ago) link

but they'll all be old. not as old as Skyrim, but still

Nhex, Thursday, 14 September 2017 02:29 (six years ago) link

people buying the Nintendo Switch during the next 6 months (i.e. me) do not care how old these ported AAA other-console / PC games are - and we never have

El Tomboto, Thursday, 14 September 2017 03:26 (six years ago) link

If a Dark Souls Anthology comes out for Switch it will sell many copies.

.oO (silby), Thursday, 14 September 2017 03:51 (six years ago) link

Anyway, Octopath Traveler demo was pretty fun, also fairly gorgeous

.oO (silby), Thursday, 14 September 2017 03:52 (six years ago) link

jrpgs are the genre that i am the most skeptical of, there's really only a few that i like and they were all made in the 90s. i definitely love the visual style of octopath though so i'll have to give it a try

ciderpress, Thursday, 14 September 2017 05:21 (six years ago) link

I'm not sure I've ever finished an honest to god JRPG but I'll sure as hell start em now and then

I guess I finished Golden Sun? Maybe? Yeah I must've.

yeah, considering how little third-party support nintendo consoles have had since the gamecube this is really encouraging news

and both doom and wolfenstein are fantastic, i'd be really tempted to double-dip on both because i am an idiot

a dark souls trilogy would be amazing

i will definitely double up for Doom - DOOM ON THE BUS. DOOOOOOM.

jamiesummerz, Thursday, 14 September 2017 12:35 (six years ago) link

Was thinking of getting my son the new 2DS XL for Christmas as thought there'd be load of cheap old 3DS games available for it.

However, upon looking it seems they've all held their price. Super Smash Bros is selling for about £40 for example, despite being 3 years old. Is that something that's happened since the 2DS came out? (As most PS4 and Xbox One games that are over a year old are usually dirt cheap).

groovypanda, Thursday, 14 September 2017 14:35 (six years ago) link

Nintendo first party games have always tended to hold their price, unless they are a total disaster like Metroid Other M. There is a half price line of games for the 3DS though http://www.nintendo.com/nintendo-selects

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 14 September 2017 14:41 (six years ago) link

Some first party games at this point may cost less as download titles than physically, since the physical versions will be out of print and overpriced by Amazon robots

.oO (silby), Thursday, 14 September 2017 14:42 (six years ago) link

also these games are being added to the Selects line in October - Super Mario 3D Land, Kirby's Triple Deluxe and Luigi's Mansion 2.

Nintendo handheld games for first-party stuff, going back as far as GBA at least, always hold value

Octopath Traveller demo (square enix new-old school rpg coming as Switch exclusive) is up on the estore and its EXCELLENT.

jamiesummerz, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 15:43 (six years ago) link

Golden Sun vibes imo

.oO (silby), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 15:45 (six years ago) link

is that good or bad

ciderpress, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 15:57 (six years ago) link

I thought golden sun was on the boring side and was only notable for being on handheld

ciderpress, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 15:58 (six years ago) link

I was a teenager when I started Golden Sun and maybe a young adult when I finished it I don't remember but I liked it and this game made me recall Golden Sun fondly, in particular the rhythm of the core combat mechanic of breaking and bursting reminded me of the Djinn system of unleashing and summoning. I bet this game is reminiscent of things that older people or people with different touchstones from the aughts might think of as more noteworthy but yknow I've never actually played a Final Fantasy other than FF Tactics Advance and uh the weird cartoony one for DS.

.oO (silby), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 17:00 (six years ago) link

ah ok. visually this is very much trying to be FF6 but 2.5d-ized. I haven't seen the combat system yet so I can't speak to that

ciderpress, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 17:18 (six years ago) link

i like how it looks but the unskippable text and tiresome first attempts at fighting aren't helping
