resisted 7 bcs of hp jack issue but now wondering whether it's that much of a deal given they hand you a "dongle" (*barf*). Is there any obvious quality loss from that setup? Do the remote/mic functions still work?

Only vaguely relevant, but I made this recently:

the lightning port dongle works fine for me - it just stays attached to the plug on my headphones so it's no different from using a headphone jack

French media is noting that the X costs only 10 euros less than the French minimum wage monthly salary.

droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 16:40 (six years ago) link

My headphone jack is starting to die of old age and is a surprisingly expensive fix. Seems like the lightning port itself might hold up to more mechanical abuse?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 20:11 (six years ago) link

tbh I figured there were some engineers at apple who were always going nuts about this analog interface on the side of their phone

I would imagine at least one guy had a head melting experience when Square and others made devices that plugged into the headphones port

mh, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 20:55 (six years ago) link

I thought my headphone was fucked but there was just a bunch of lint in it.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 21:06 (six years ago) link

lack of headphone jack is slightly less problematic now that there's wireless charging

every couple of months or so i like to go in to the headphone jack, and lightning port, with a toothpick. sometimes you end up with great stuff coming out

, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 22:18 (six years ago) link

yeah same, i found the end of a paper clip works best.

Spottie, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 22:26 (six years ago) link

the phone is getting all of the attention of course, but the real news of the announcement was LTE on the watch. Which means I can leave my phone at home and go for a walk in the park. I'd like to try it just sitting in my pocket without a band, treating it like an iphone nano. and to enjoy some music from it would be good too.

calstars, Thursday, 14 September 2017 00:57 (six years ago) link

thought about this but was afraid of shorting it

I turn mine off to do it

Spottie, Thursday, 14 September 2017 01:30 (six years ago) link

Plastic swiss army knife toothpick. It can take a lot of digging to get the lint out. I wouldn't use metal for fear of scraping the connections. Perhaps I'm overly cautious.

Hans Holbein (Chinchilla Volapük), Thursday, 14 September 2017 02:55 (six years ago) link

if you want to use metal best to use something soft like a bit of small gauge solder

tried to buy a watch, there was no pickup point option for some reason, then i lost my place in the queue and the delay's gone up to 3 weeks. so fuck them.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 15 September 2017 07:25 (six years ago) link

so pickup points are an option on the full website but not in the apple store app. apple is not as good as this stuff as it thinks it is.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 15 September 2017 07:51 (six years ago) link

and none of my pickup points will do pickup. so... they're not pickup points. so why list them as pickup points?

re the phone: eh. i sort of want an 8+ but sort of don't care, and the x is the first iphone that i explicitly do not want. i also don't want to upgrade my 6 to ios 11 because it'll most likely lag like crazy, so i could be on ios 10 for months/a year out of sheer ennui.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 15 September 2017 07:58 (six years ago) link

I just bought an SE. the X looks dumb and way too expensive for a minor upgrade re. the things I care about most (e.g. battery life), and the 8 isn't much cheaper, and evidently crappier than both the SE and X on battery life. I don't care about a bigger screen or "3D touch" (have never used it nor heard anyone talk about it except in reviews so I gather it's also a minor thing). & the upgrade from a 5 will be considerable: better battery life I've heard, plus touch id, the step counter, and 4G capability (key since my carrier is phasing out 3G in my city). & I keep the headphone jack! I went for the 128gb since 32gb is too small for the music I'm accustomed to taking around, and it's worth 100€ to me to be able to take more music around.

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 15 September 2017 10:20 (six years ago) link

Sensible. Still trying to figure out whether using a dongle with high-end headphones is an abomination. Otherwise, think I'll get the 8+

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 15 September 2017 10:34 (six years ago) link

euler otm. it's starting to feel like apple is missing the phone sweet spot, with a standard phone that looks dated and has a giant chin, a plus model that's bigger than it needs to be, and a cutting-edge prototype flagship that's unjustifiably expensive for nearly everyone (almost as if they're only making it to prove they can). meanwhile the se is inexpensive and making a lot of people very happy, but it needs a spec bump.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 15 September 2017 10:53 (six years ago) link

Euler, your 5 already has 4G LTE; the iPhone 4S was the last with only 3G.

AA is otm. I have a 6 now that's serving me fine, though I'm up for an discounted upgrade. The phone is still wider and heavier than I'd like. I miss the smaller size and weight of my old 5, but the screen's a bit small for my big fingers and my farsighted eyes. The iPhone X puts a 6/7/8 Plus size screen in a phone that's almost as small as the non-Plus 6/7/8, but what I really want (and would be willing to pay big bucks for) is a regular 6/7/8 size screen in a phone the size of a SE, but they're not going to make one. I'll wait to see the X OLED screen and it's feel (and online reviews from others) before passing judgement on it, but it's still bigger and heavier than my 6 and I want to go in the other direction. I may upgrade to a SE instead and live with the small screen, and save lots of money doing so. And yes, the mainstream 8 and 8+ look very much like the three year old design they mostly are, very dated compared to the competing Samsung Galaxy S8.

As for using using high-end headphones with the lightning dongle, one interesting potential advantage to that setup is being able to choose your own DAC (which is built into the dongle) rather than the one that's in the phone leading to the analog headphone jack. There are some alternative dongles available with audiophile-grade DACs that some prefer the sound of. I don't usually identify as an audiophile, but the sound from the hp jack output on my IPhone 6 sounds noticeably lifeless and less vibrant compared to my iPod nano 5 whose sound quality (and interface) I still love though I rarely use it anymore.

Lee626, Friday, 15 September 2017 14:48 (six years ago) link

Right, my 5 got LTE in the USA but it doesn't have the right cell model or antenna or whatever for 4G in Europe.

The SE is way faster at doing things than my 5 was, like at mail & music, which I guess had been lagging on my 5 though it came on slowly enough that I hadn't noticed. now doing regular things is zippy!

Maybe in two years or so there will be magic new things happening on mobile phones & I'll want a flagship again but for now the advances are minor (particularly compared to the prices).

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 15 September 2017 14:55 (six years ago) link

tbh my iPhone 6 on iOS10 is already very laggy. FB app can take up to 10 secs and even whatsapp types of app are pretty slow to open.

whatsapp opens in approx 2 seconds on my SE

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 15 September 2017 15:10 (six years ago) link

yes I had stopped using fb on my 5, usually took more like 20 secs to load. messenger was still fine-ish.

now things seem better! (xp confirms)

I found myself awake at midnight so I got it out the way and picked up a 64GB 8 -- spent the last couple of days contemplating and I figured ultimately that given I currently have a three year old 16GB 6 even a base level improvement like that is still a noticeable improvement re chip, camera, storage, etc. etc. Plus I was able to pay for it all immediately plus tax/AppleCare and still have a chunk of change left over for other things.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 15 September 2017 15:44 (six years ago) link

xp yeah it's actually Viber that's hella laggy

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 15 September 2017 16:19 (six years ago) link

7 plus camera is A nice improvement over the 6s in twilight conditions. I think the 8 plus camera is the same spec.

Add me to the list of folks who, after seeing the new iphones, ran out to buy an SE.

Some kind of pre-paid SIM swapping ninjitsu allowed me to get it for $150 flat! Is that normal? Seems like a really good deal.

Dan I., Friday, 15 September 2017 21:42 (six years ago) link

very very otm. i would LOVE an iphone 6 sized screen in a slightly smaller body. marques brownlee's video review mentions how hard it is to reach across the x's screen with one hand despite the phone fitting in one hand.

it feels like we're on the tipping point of bigger screens right across the board, but it's been a slow revolution probably due to production limitations. maybe this is another reason i'm not rushing to replace a three year old phone for the first time ever — the future has been solidly telegraphed by the mi mix, the galaxy s8, the essential phone and now the iphone x. we already know how dated the iphone 8 will look a year from now.

it's incredibly weird seeing so many iphone 8 models in abundant supply 12 hours after preorders opened. has that ever happened before? are those people waiting for the iphone x, or have they just decided to wait another year for more interesting iphones? it'll be interesting to see.
