Head Music promo material outtakes

Ugh the only carrier for Watch in the UK is EE. Fuck that

Is EE terrible? I was about to switch to them.

Kat Slater Slag meme (jed_), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 16:29 (six years ago) link

I'm with EE. Never had any problems with them and 4G coverage fairly good

groovypanda, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 19:02 (six years ago) link

good coverage but if you ever need customer service HAHAHAHAHAHA

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 19:15 (six years ago) link

Yes, for my mental health I had to eventually give up trying to get them to unlock my out-of-contract iPhone and had to sell it locked to EE instead. Then I quit them for Three and haven't looked back.

Battery life is now noticeably worse on my 7 plus after updating to IOS 11. Apart from that, not much difference so far.

Luna Schlosser, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 20:00 (six years ago) link

control center is super nice

Spottie, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 20:02 (six years ago) link

trying to figure out if my first gen watch is having battery issues or if something was screwed up

hopefully it just sorts itself out under the new watchOS

mh, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 20:07 (six years ago) link

Upgrade dude.

Jeff, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 20:13 (six years ago) link

now when my phone wakes up, instead of just fading into my desktop, it starts at a brighter color and then changes. It's ugly. And the calculator icon is ugly. Some of the visual design choices are weird.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 20:21 (six years ago) link

Pro tip buy PCalc and you get your choice of icons and a better calculator.

.oO (silby), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 20:21 (six years ago) link

The PCalc has AR too!

Jeff, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 20:33 (six years ago) link

yeah i am definitely not upgrading my 6, sounds like a flaky release all round

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:32 (six years ago) link

(to ios 11 i mean, will probably get an iphone 8 at some point though)

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:32 (six years ago) link

can't fathom being reluctant to upgrade a phone and blase about a desktop os upgrade that force upgrades the filesystem (unless it's one of the disks they can't reliably upgrade yet)

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:03 (six years ago) link

I was all set for my usual "I have an old handset (6) that'll be slowed down so I'll avoid this as long as possible" and then I read something that convinced me to give it a go anyway and I'm so glad I did: if launch times are slower I haven't noticed and the speed gains from the new control centre make it totally worth it.

It helps that I finally discovered that holding down the new tab key in Safari allows you do close all tabs at once – I had hundreds and I can now get to the url box much more quickly after launch Safari, which is still my #1 way to search despite Gboard.

Alba, Thursday, 21 September 2017 06:36 (six years ago) link

The new screenshot management and screen recording function are really nice too.

Alba, Thursday, 21 September 2017 06:37 (six years ago) link

great safari tip dude, didn't know about that one

Nhex, Thursday, 21 September 2017 06:44 (six years ago) link

nice! so i wonder why some 6 users have chronic lagging and some are fine

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 21 September 2017 07:21 (six years ago) link

upgraded my 6 - it doesnt seem any better or worse lag-wise. I can't really figure out though why people are raving about the new control center. How are you guys using it?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 21 September 2017 07:45 (six years ago) link

I can't really figure out though why people are raving about the new control center.

just having the stuff you need on one single pane relieves a world of hurt imo

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 21 September 2017 07:56 (six years ago) link

can't upgrade to iOS 11 because not compatible with flappy bird

, Thursday, 21 September 2017 12:23 (six years ago) link

New control center was great, then realized night shift button was gone and couldn’t be added via customization and I hated it, then found it by holding the brightness slider and love it again.

Also it feels much faster on my 6s. Touch ID unlocks in a fraction of a second now which surprised me.

joygoat, Thursday, 21 September 2017 12:26 (six years ago) link

i like this so far but there's a lot of zoomy reveals in email particularly that i find distracting - you'd think "reduce motion" would have put paid to that sort of FRIVOLITY

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 21 September 2017 12:32 (six years ago) link

On phone, you can’t add particular apps to the control center right? Just the limited choices that are offered in settings?

harbinger of failure (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 21 September 2017 12:45 (six years ago) link

I wish you could remove screen mirroring. Ain’t got no time for that.

Jeff, Thursday, 21 September 2017 13:31 (six years ago) link

Main things I like about the new control centre, apart from it all being on one page again:

• tweaking of airplane mode now being persistent: eg if I turn airplane mode on then turn bluetooth on, it now defaults to that configuration next time I'm in airplane mode (great for going to bed but carrying on with uninterrupted wireless listening)
• being able to quickly create a note from anywhere by adding that icon and doing a long press. yes, i'd rather if it let me use Evernote, but this OK as a scratchpad
• adjusting the timer quickly with the long press
• having accessibility shortcuts: I use the assistive touch in bed to avoid the clicking of the home button disturbing my wife but like to be able to turn it off again quickly

Alba, Thursday, 21 September 2017 15:57 (six years ago) link

- shifting everything DOWN so it's CLOSER TO YOUR THUMB 👍

doesn't work w/Exchange servers whoops

Zing seems to not be able to scroll all the way to the end of threads in iOS 11. And it broke KRFT!

DJI, Friday, 22 September 2017 01:51 (six years ago) link

Yeah I meant to post about that. You get to the bottom of a zing thread and the last post is partly obscured by the bottom bar

harbinger of failure (Jon not Jon), Friday, 22 September 2017 01:53 (six years ago) link

Same thing for me at the top if I click individual posts

joygoat, Friday, 22 September 2017 02:11 (six years ago) link

oh, nevermind, Xcom:EW not dead after all?

Dan I., Friday, 22 September 2017 17:42 (six years ago) link

hmm yeah

I’m far from a filesystem expert but the skepticism about apfs features seemed really odd, considering the features like write-on-modification as opposed to write-on-copy are pretty much what you want in a modern filesystem

I get that some tools messing around with internals would need changes but others I’ve used, like winclone, have been happy apple has cleaned up some things that required turning off system protection (which was not about apfs, but connected in scope) to work in the prior os but now work cleanly

I’ve used in-place reformatting tools with mixed results for years but recent experiments have been good! I’m trying to remember what tool I used to use on pc that was a little pricey but good way back in the late 90s as a reference. Hrrm.

mh, Saturday, 23 September 2017 04:48 (six years ago) link

Got my 8 today, upgraded from the 6. Took me a bit to get used to the haptic/3D touch stuff that’s been standard for a while, but it’s satisfying once you get it. Feels like the home, uh sensor, is an actual button. Was genuinely confused by it for a minute.

But yeah, I’m late to the party with all that. Not sure how it compares to the 7, but it’s lightning fast. Glass back makes it weightier and significantly more grippy, feels more secure in your hand. Seemed like a boring upgrade, but I’m definitely impressed coming from a 6. It’s fun to use.

circa1916, Saturday, 23 September 2017 05:11 (six years ago) link

typing from high sierra, upgrading all my homebrew packages now. seems good so far.

mh, Saturday, 23 September 2017 22:05 (six years ago) link

xpost — yeah same here, got mine yesterday. Enjoyable changes — need to test out the camera.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 24 September 2017 00:08 (six years ago) link

bought a series 3 watch so now i have to upgrade to ios 11 damn it

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 24 September 2017 04:44 (six years ago) link

"would you like to look at some accessories? cases, screen protectors..."

"do you sell screen protectors for apple watches?"

"...no"

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 24 September 2017 04:55 (six years ago) link

Were you actually hoping you could paste some awful sticker onto your watch

.oO (silby), Sunday, 24 September 2017 04:56 (six years ago) link

no

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 24 September 2017 05:32 (six years ago) link

i was surprised they'd sell them, but it turns out they don't and the guy was just flogging any old shit at me

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 24 September 2017 05:35 (six years ago) link

ios 11 on my iphone 6 seems to be snappier! did not expect that at all.

no substantive comment on the series 3 (no lte) watch as i’ve not done anything with it yet, but it’s quick to do things. the last time i played with an apple watch it was so slow that i gave up. this is nice.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 24 September 2017 08:15 (six years ago) link

ios 11 on my 7 is nice but seems to be more of a battery suck? i’ve tweaked background refresh & location services & it’s better-ish but still kinda :/

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 24 September 2017 15:03 (six years ago) link

same here

Nhex, Sunday, 24 September 2017 15:52 (six years ago) link

hmm not great for a one year old phone. there'll have to be a point release addressing it if it doesn't settle down in a few days.

my 6 has been plugged in since i upgraded, so i don't know what it's done to battery yet.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 24 September 2017 20:53 (six years ago) link

I have a 4 and a 4S, both maxed out to the latest compatible OS, which has caused them to function in slow-motion. So I think the ideal OS for one of these things is the one it ships with.
