yeah i am definitely not upgrading my 6, sounds like a flaky release all round

(to ios 11 i mean, will probably get an iphone 8 at some point though)

can't fathom being reluctant to upgrade a phone and blase about a desktop os upgrade that force upgrades the filesystem (unless it's one of the disks they can't reliably upgrade yet)

I was all set for my usual "I have an old handset (6) that'll be slowed down so I'll avoid this as long as possible" and then I read something that convinced me to give it a go anyway and I'm so glad I did: if launch times are slower I haven't noticed and the speed gains from the new control centre make it totally worth it.

It helps that I finally discovered that holding down the new tab key in Safari allows you do close all tabs at once – I had hundreds and I can now get to the url box much more quickly after launch Safari, which is still my #1 way to search despite Gboard.

The new screenshot management and screen recording function are really nice too.

New control center was great, then realized night shift button was gone and couldn’t be added via customization and I hated it, then found it by holding the brightness slider and love it again.

Also it feels much faster on my 6s. Touch ID unlocks in a fraction of a second now which surprised me.

i like this so far but there's a lot of zoomy reveals in email particularly that i find distracting - you'd think "reduce motion" would have put paid to that sort of FRIVOLITY

On phone, you can’t add particular apps to the control center right? Just the limited choices that are offered in settings?

I wish you could remove screen mirroring. Ain’t got no time for that.

Main things I like about the new control centre, apart from it all being on one page again:

• tweaking of airplane mode now being persistent: eg if I turn airplane mode on then turn bluetooth on, it now defaults to that configuration next time I'm in airplane mode (great for going to bed but carrying on with uninterrupted wireless listening)
• being able to quickly create a note from anywhere by adding that icon and doing a long press. yes, i'd rather if it let me use Evernote, but this OK as a scratchpad
• adjusting the timer quickly with the long press
• having accessibility shortcuts: I use the assistive touch in bed to avoid the clicking of the home button disturbing my wife but like to be able to turn it off again quickly

- shifting everything DOWN so it's CLOSER TO YOUR THUMB 👍

I’m far from a filesystem expert but the skepticism about apfs features seemed really odd, considering the features like write-on-modification as opposed to write-on-copy are pretty much what you want in a modern filesystem

I get that some tools messing around with internals would need changes but others I’ve used, like winclone, have been happy apple has cleaned up some things that required turning off system protection (which was not about apfs, but connected in scope) to work in the prior os but now work cleanly

I’ve used in-place reformatting tools with mixed results for years but recent experiments have been good! I’m trying to remember what tool I used to use on pc that was a little pricey but good way back in the late 90s as a reference. Hrrm.

Got my 8 today, upgraded from the 6. Took me a bit to get used to the haptic/3D touch stuff that’s been standard for a while, but it’s satisfying once you get it. Feels like the home, uh sensor, is an actual button. Was genuinely confused by it for a minute.

But yeah, I’m late to the party with all that. Not sure how it compares to the 7, but it’s lightning fast. Glass back makes it weightier and significantly more grippy, feels more secure in your hand. Seemed like a boring upgrade, but I’m definitely impressed coming from a 6. It’s fun to use.

ios 11 on my iphone 6 seems to be snappier! did not expect that at all.

no substantive comment on the series 3 (no lte) watch as i’ve not done anything with it yet, but it’s quick to do things. the last time i played with an apple watch it was so slow that i gave up. this is nice.

ios 11 on my 7 is nice but seems to be more of a battery suck? i’ve tweaked background refresh & location services & it’s better-ish but still kinda :/

hmm not great for a one year old phone. there'll have to be a point release addressing it if it doesn't settle down in a few days.

my 6 has been plugged in since i upgraded, so i don't know what it's done to battery yet.

I have a 4 and a 4S, both maxed out to the latest compatible OS, which has caused them to function in slow-motion. So I think the ideal OS for one of these things is the one it ships with.

And fuck Apple for not allowing users to downgrade.

my battery does seem to be burning down faster than normal, but not catastrophically so.

ios 11 seems fine overall, but the animations are a bit on the jovial side with all the boinging and swooping and such. now that i’m on 11 i’m wondering if i can squeeze one more year out of this phone.

quick watch series 3 impressions:

• quick, responsive, no lag to speak of
• it's 6 pm and the battery's on 85% which i did not expect at all (i took it off the charger at 7.30 this morning)
• i've already filled all my rings, but all i did was go to work and shop for groceries idk
• the haptic feedback feels like a pen fell on my wrist, which was embarrassing the first time
• there's a bug where it changes to 12 hour time whenever you update the watch face, which is trivial in the scheme of things but still shits me
• very glad i bought this thing, excited to see what else it can do

For the first time, I've started to get interested in the watch as a means of breaking free of my phone addiction. Curious to hear back from new users, esp. those not interested in the fitness/running stuff.

it was cool to take messages without getting out my phone, and replying to the easy ones while i was fumbling for the lift. paying for groceries without going into my pockets was nice too. not indispensable so far though.

tracer: you can get proper music controls by swiping down for notifications, but so far i’ve found myself swiping up for control centre, going “agh shit”, swiping down to clear the control centre and swiping down again to get to the full controls. annoying.

where i can see the watch being properly useful is when you’re waiting for a text/email but you don’t want to anxiously crane your neck into your phone every 30 seconds. the watch will tap you when the message comes in. for someone as fidgety as me it could make a real difference.

xpost idgi. when i swipe down on lock screen nothing happens. if i unlock then swipe down i just get my notifications. in neither case do i get audio playback controls.
