So anyway Mr. M got throat nodules that necessitated postponing the series but it's still on, bumped now to January and February -- and now this is happening:

http://www.post-punk.com/david-j-haskins-and-peter-murphy-are-set-to-reunite-to-perform-bauhaus-songs-together-for-the-first-time-in-over-a-decade/

Of all the intertangled relationships between the core four, theirs might be the weirdest.

hey if anyone wants to take me to see david j and peter i'd totally be cool with that

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 21 September 2017 18:39 (six years ago) link

Thread doesn't seem to mention his public spat with Brendan Perry a few years ago. That was a rum business.

four months pass...

Okay so the residency is finally kicking in this week -- of course there had to be a further slight delay (visa issue exacerbated by, you guessed it, the government shutdown!) so it's starting on Friday but hey, it's finally almost here.

So I wrote about it. By talking with him:

Ned Raggett, Monday, 22 January 2018 16:44 (six years ago) link

how many are you going to?

akm, Monday, 22 January 2018 19:44 (six years ago) link

Seven so far. Maybe a couple more.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 22 January 2018 19:44 (six years ago) link

(I'm only doing 2; next Tuesday, Deep/Love Hysteria, and then one of the Bauhaus shows with David J on the 15th)

akm, Monday, 22 January 2018 19:44 (six years ago) link

i'll be at deep on the 31st and David J on the 16th say hi!

kurt schwitterz, Monday, 22 January 2018 19:45 (six years ago) link

Yeah I'll be at the shows on the 31st and 16th for sure. Everything was supposed to kick off tomorrow but that show is now rescheduled for the 1st.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 22 January 2018 19:49 (six years ago) link

Gosh. Well then ... there's someone I used to admire being a stupid prick in old age. Dude was never fit to lick Bowie's shoes anyway.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 02:18 (six years ago) link

"Blackstar" alone blows away Murphy's entire solo career so there's the rub.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 02:19 (six years ago) link

I am sure some of that had to be waspishness about being asked about Bowie once more, which, well, if he doesn't get why that's the case by now... (And yeah, a rather hard judgment on Blackstar so hm.)

FWIW, I asked him a more general question about mortality given the passing of both Bowie and Prince, the latter of whom I knew he was a big fan of, and got this as an answer, which I enjoyed but couldn't find a way to put into my piece:

How do I feel about mortality? One, I haven't come close to dying since 1981, when I had lung viral pneumonia. And two, when you're this age, of course, there is a more honed sense of what one should always live with, mortality. We all know the cliché, "We would go at any time," and that's true with everything else. But I've never felt a sense of taking it for granted, and I feel, still — even more so, now, even with the time that's gone by for myself, and especially next year for Bauhaus, because it will be the 40-year anniversary, which is unbelievable — that there's a jumping jack full of potent creative opportunities. That's a real privilege, to still have them. But I've taken that for granted, but I've one, created that existence for myself, and two, it's also — on the other hand — something that's there, and it's not something that is free of charge, it's what one's earned, as it were. The potential loss of my voice was nigh on equal to basically the death of my career, or my physical death. So that's always going to be there. Personally, I've got some ideas for next year, separate to what I've got running anyway, which I'm going to do. I've got A plans and B plans. But we'll see. I don't want to talk about that right now. But yeah, in 10 years I'm going to be 70. What the fuck for? Anyway.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 January 2018 19:47 (six years ago) link

Anyway reviving because there's been a bit of running drama all week if he can even make it over here due to, quoting a quote from the venue's folks, a "random administrative processing" delay. The initial shows from Tuesday and Wednesday were rescheduled to next week -- just got news of that in time to adjust my original piece before it ran -- and now there's a chance tomorrow's show may face a similar fate? Odd.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 January 2018 19:51 (six years ago) link

oy vay more scheduling trouble smh! also 60 yr old meth user hasn't come close to dying since 1981 lol

akm, Thursday, 25 January 2018 23:49 (six years ago) link

anyway I wouldn't mind if next week's show got delayed to another week as I have things piling up.

akm, Thursday, 25 January 2018 23:49 (six years ago) link

No he's lived in Turkey for years and years now, last I checked. (Though when I interviewed him I think he was in the UK.)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 January 2018 23:55 (six years ago) link

I thought he got in some meth accident in LA the other year but maybe he was just visiting. or maybe that was a really long time ago

Delays delays...

https://www.instagram.com/p/BecCzWVnTM8/

petermurphyofficialSF RESIDENCY UPDATE: After an unforeseen and unanticipated delay, Peter is nearing the top of the visa application list at the US Consulate. Due to a brief diplomatic spat last year between the US and Turkey resulting in a temporary mutual ban on visa issuances to each country, a backlog of Turkish applicants has seen Peter's own caught up in the pile. Despite the best efforts of the entire team working on these shows, as of today, Saturday’s Love Hysteria show is being moved to a later slot within the residency dates. So Peter is waiting to get his visa approval in Istanbul and to fly as soon as his visa is in hand, and his full band and crew are all in San Francisco. They are all ready and primed to start the residency, and will probably play the first show at triple speed due to letting out the tension and excitement to finally be playing these shows for all of you. Once Peter Murphy is in the building twill be announced. He’ll most likely fly, and after 18 hrs in the air, land running and on stage that night.(He’s telling us to tell you he can’t wait)

So basically the first show will be next Tuesday and what was four weeks of shows spread out is being rapidly concentrated into two and a half weeks of them at this point. I mean, fine enough, but this is going to be a rollercoaster.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 27 January 2018 05:06 (six years ago) link

i'm half hoping tuesday gets delayed because it's really inconvenient for me now; obv I'm going if it doesn't but if it were moved to the end of the month I wouldn't complain.

akm, Saturday, 27 January 2018 18:10 (six years ago) link

Well, lucky you, it got delayed! I hear that shows on the 12th now.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 02:10 (six years ago) link

This is all turning kinda crazy in that he'll barely have a break between Wednesday -- assuming Wednesday happens -- and the 16th, when this all wraps up. He'll literally only have Monday the 5th and Tuesday the 13th off due to preexisting shows...which means that there are no more spare days to fill up the schedule, he'll either have to project ahead after the 16th somehow or just flat out cancel some shows.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 02:13 (six years ago) link

Put on some matinees.

Chunky Backgammon (onimo), Tuesday, 30 January 2018 22:34 (six years ago) link

You know...

(So far no news today, which theoretically means tomorrow is on...but we'll see.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 22:37 (six years ago) link

And, of course:

Due to the unforeseen governmental delay in the processing of Peter’s visa application, Wednesday January 31st's performance of "Deep" will unfortunately be rescheduled to Monday, February 19th.

This is a situation we are taking very seriously, as it also has extremely severe implications for our business and staff, and want to make sure that we keep our customers informed and aware by being as transparent as possible. Peter's visa is still held up in a "random administrative processing" procedure with the government, which is rare, and we are seeking information literally minute by minute and throwing everything we can behind speeding this process up.

All tickets purchased for the 1/30 show will transfer to this new date - so there is no action necessary on your part, you can simply check in with your original ticket on 2/19. Full refunds will be granted if you are unable to make the new date, and if you prefer to attend a different date we will happily work to accommodate your request (where show capacity allows).

If you cannot attend this new date and would like a refund, you can contact Ticketfly directly and they will issue it asap. You can either email them at customersupp✧✧✧@ticket✧✧✧.c✧✧ or call at 877-987-6487 (if you have time, calling might be a bit quicker).

We are monitoring this situation constantly (and have been since we learned this news), and will keep you up to date the second we receive any kind of confirmation. Our ticket holders are our number one priority, and as such our staff has been working tirelessly to keep fans informed and up to date, scheduling last minute DJ nights at the venue, and corresponding personally with hundreds of disappointed fans to help accommodate each individual request.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 23:09 (six years ago) link

So basically the 'last show' being a Bauhaus one...no longer applies. And looks like they'll keep rolling it forward from there?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 23:10 (six years ago) link

what a pain in the ass this is for the booker(s) at the chapel

akm, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 23:12 (six years ago) link

I've no doubt.

The weird irony here is that if (and I will add at this point, 'if') this Thursday's show goes as planned, that'll be...the original show at the start of the run that was first postponed, starting this whole shuffle off.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 23:15 (six years ago) link

I wonder how long they're going to continue to push these off before they say hey, this isn't happening. the chapel can't afford to do this forever.

akm, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 20:54 (six years ago) link

Rather.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 22:01 (six years ago) link

Annnd tomorrow night's show postponed to a late show on the 19th.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 23:44 (six years ago) link

This is gonna end with him doing one 24 hour long show.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 23:50 (six years ago) link

Wisely (I feel), they've decided to avoid the steady day-by-day drip and just postpone the next few upcoming shows en masse (all the more helpful if he gets the go-ahead early and can fly out here to get over jet lag). As you can see on the calendar -- https://www.thechapelsf.com/calendar/ -- he's now packing in all the shows over two weeks starting next Tuesday, including double shows on a number of nights, and the original planned chronological order is long since out of the window. Oddly enough I think that'll add some unexpected energy to all this, though I suspect all involved would have been fine without that.

And obviously this is still all a crazy situation to start with. That said, Paul Chalker at the Chapel did say this in his mailout last night: "If there's one thing we've learned from this entire situation is just how amazing Peter Murphy fans are. Thank you so much for all your understanding, and know that we are working around the clock and throwing everything we have at this to speed the process up and keep everyone up to date." And he mentioned that directly to me as well, so it's nice to see positive vibes given how nuts it all is.

But I'll add that if this drags out further it's hard for me to see how this will work unless they double stack more shows. After the 19th, the Chapel is booked solid by other acts for the next six days. And as it stands he'll first perform for seven straight days, one which is a double show, then a day break, then four days ending on another double show, another day break, then one final double show. Admittedly I've seen as crazy tour schedules, though often with younger performers, and his big advantage, of course, is that he doesn't have to go anywhere, as well as his crew only having to fully breakdown and reset a couple of times. However this shakes out, it's going to be a rollercoaster. (And given I'm going to be at seven nights out of twelve of these performances as it stands, I may be looking a little bleary myself at the end of it. At least I'll have more nights off in comparison!)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:08 (six years ago) link

It won't end!

Mail just sent out, edited:

As you all know already, there has been an unforeseen, incredibly unfortunate delay in the processing of Peter's visa application. Due to this delay, Tuesday February 6th's performance of "Love Hysteria" will unfortunately be rescheduled to Monday, February 26th. The doors for this show will open at 6pm, with the show starting at 7pm....

We appreciate that the nature of moving these shows in the manner that has occurred is extremely frustrating for everyone concerned. Please bear in mind that we are in a situation where the information we are having to work with is unbelievably difficult to obtain, and is largely without precedent. Everything we have done at The Chapel in relation to the news as we've been receiving it has been with the ticket holders in mind first and foremost, and are working hard on an announcement for later today that will address the remainder of the residency dates. Please bear with us for this announcement, we truly appreciate your patience.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:48 (six years ago) link

The end of that sure signals that we're probably seeing a mass rescheduling of some sort, but guess we'll find out.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 February 2018 19:53 (six years ago) link

damn that would kind of suck, I was starting to get excited about these shows

To all good people having planned to attend the SF Residency:

The entire residency is now being moved to a June/July period, the details of wbich are being finalized as we speak.
Look out for the official detailed post that will be released shortly.
Love to all and everything,
Peter

Did those concerts in SF ever work out?

Anyway Amazon had the new 5 Albums thing on sale so I snagged a copy, it's a very nicely designed book with his first five albums on CD, including some bonus tracks appended to each (about 20). Mastering is decent, louder of course but by no means brickwalled. Glad I bought because I only have Deep!

I've been listening to Love Hysteria and Holy Smoke, and I think they've aged really well. All Night Long is such a classic!

"Love Hysteria" is such a wonderful, hypnotic album with a perfect flow and great percussion. By far my favorite thing he's done.

I stopped following Peter Murphy in 1992 solely because I was really put off by the artwork and title of Holy Smoke. I still am, but the thread revive inspired me to listen to it this morning -- much better than I expected! Looking forward to checking out the rest of what I've missed since then.
