I've always thought Tim Rogers' videos for Kotaku hinted at something greater but generally fall short. I can't explain why. But for whatever reason this one got to me.

I like the math on their "value per time" calculation - that a player will play the game 2.5 hours per day every day for a year, that's 912 hours. (They also estimate that a player will spend 20 bucks on lootcrates every single month!)

Screamin' Jay Gould (The Yellow Kid), Monday, 20 November 2017 22:45 (six years ago) link

tbf there are whales out there that will blow those numbers out of the water and skew the average, though I doubt by that much. Also, if I were a kid today I'd probably be sucking up all my hours on these crazy F2P skinner box games, considering how much time I "wasted" on mere single-player RPGs

this guy is making a bizarre comparison that reminds me of being a kid and being unable to catch a movie so I got a children's book adaptation instead... which wouldn't really happen in this age

there is something to the whole $/entertainment-hour equation but he's out of his mind nonetheless

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 00:47 (six years ago) link

That is actually pretty honourable of them. Freemium is a scourge. Sadly I don't think the new model will work, because the micro-transactional nature of freemium means you can fool your brain into thinking you're not spending much, whereas £30 for a clicker game seems like a ridiculous outlay.

Heroes. Sad that Nintendo is planning to go the other way: https://www.engadget.com/2017/10/31/super-mario-run-200-million-downloads-not-acceptable-profits/

DJI, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 19:25 (six years ago) link

I agree that $30 seems way too high for that kind of game - it'll need some mindblowing reviews to sell it. That said - are they the first F2P developers to actually admit the terrible psychological cost of it, let alone take action?
