“We haven’t had any cases of sexual harassment to deal with,” Ashbrooke wrote. (Ashbrooke was vice president of human resources at Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax Films from 1991 to 2000, according to her LinkedIn page, a time when the now-disgraced producer was paying out hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal settlements to squash allegations of sexual harassment and unwanted sexual contact by employees and actresses.)

there's no media company i'd be more delighted to see dragged thru the mud than VICE though it's about a decade and a half overdue, it might be a bit of "closing the barn door after the horse has bolted" as it were.

We are going to remember our outrage at this moment and let it fuel our direction over the next four years. We are never going to let ourselves get complacent. We are never going to let the flames of resistance burn out.

there's so much in this story, but this bit made me think of this thread:

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/06/inside-vice-media-shane-smith.html

"While Viceland also has a younger audience than many networks, its average age is still 42, which has had the effect of both expanding and aging Vice’s demographic. This was more than a small problem for a company whose entire selling proposition was its ability to reach a young audience. Over the years, Vice has proclaimed itself the voice of Generations X, then Y, and now Z, the youngest of whom don’t identify with the punk tenor of the company’s origins. Vice’s audience still skews male, and a loyal chunk still lingers from the company’s more macho days. (A Vice staffer told me it was relatively easy to get access to law enforcement: 'Nobody loves Vice more than cops.') In a meeting just before Donald Trump’s inauguration, Eddy Moretti warned the editors of Vice’s websites against leading an editorial resistance and offered a confusing proposition that may have put the final stake in Old Vice, suggesting that 'we might want to develop the Vice version of David Brooks.'"

I fell for the "late gen-xers selling transgression to early millenials" bullshit for about a minute fifteen years ago, then fell for the fake respectability they tried a few years after that. Since then, these people have occasionally published or produced the rare thing that's mildly entertaining but each article or show I enjoyed could have easily been put out by a different group with no real change because none of them really felt that linked to their branding

they don't have a bench of actual interesting personalities, nor do they really have enough depth on any specific topics

I mean, plenty of podcasts find success without either, but it ties back to the problem that their brand has no ethos. I mean, what's their hook, that they're edgy?

mh, Monday, 11 June 2018 20:45 (five years ago) link

the tagline on vice.com is VICE - Original reporting and documentaries on everything that matters in the world.

so they're CNN only they're, like, cool if you're 40 and a dude who used to do too much coke?

i liked the edgy vice of my youth, even though it's aged terribly those were quality LOLs that i cherish. the company's identity crisis is something to behold for sure and almost everything it does completely sucks but i think there is a potentially good version of vice out there that i like to imagine sometimes

I just looked up that Google report that put Vice at 2nd least cool among teens - it has YouTube at #1 on its cool graph? I knew YouTube was popular with the kids but I can't say I've ever thought of it as "cool." huh.

Best thing on Vice now is nirvanna the band the show. Canadian buddy show set in Toronto - past mockunentary
Part Seinfeld show about nothing. A lot of the mock parts involve pedestrians unaware of what’s going on security staff have tried to thwart the guerilla aryle filming

That’s the sort of post that would ordinarily seem destined to echo out into the void without response but luckily I, also, am a Nirvanna The Band The Show fan.
Has there been any progress on s2 reaching non-Canadian audiences via legal channels? Why was there a separate Canadian version of Viceland in the first place?

You're all losing so many points on your progress bars (Champiness), Monday, 18 June 2018 08:18 (five years ago) link

Also, while I’m here, to maybe try my own hand at a sales pitch: it’s about a two-man band in Toronto who live together and don’t seem to rehearse much, but go to extreme lengths every episode to book a gig at real-life venue The Rivoli (trying seemingly everything, except, for some reason, just calling up the place to do it the normal way). The piano player obviously has 99% of the talent in the group but the vocalist is the ringleader with all the harebrained schemes.
Like Ross said it’s mostly shot in real places with real people, apart from scenes back at their house where they come up with the plots. It’s remarkably airtight considering that - they have a knack for getting exactly what they need out of non-actors, and in a way that keeps much of the potential discomfort firmly on themselves. Along with the show’s emphasis on making Toronto feel like Toronto, the impression they create is that two people in this perfectly ordinary city are living a hilarious sitcom life, and we just happen to have cameras trained on them while they fail to gel with their surroundings. It’s really a delight, and probably the reason I keep forgetting that Vice doesn’t actually do all that much else that I like.

When was there an issue? It has aired in Australia and is all available for legal streaming

kelp, clam and carrion (sic), Monday, 18 June 2018 08:44 (five years ago) link

Hmm. For the longest time it wasn’t available in America, at least. But you’re right, it seems to be on iTunes now.
Anyway I would strongly encourage even the Vice-averse to give it a shot.
