Did the iPhone Upgrade Plan pre-approval thing, so I should be ready to roll on Friday.

Jeff, Monday, 23 October 2017 19:22 (six years ago) link

which one jeff?

i mean this is how i felt about my iphone 6 back when i got it but now it's been borked by ios 10 and 11.

yeah true, but that had 1 gb of ram, so even at the time it felt like it was on the verge of being superseded. the 8 has 2 gb ram (which is still not heaps) and the a11 chip which benchmarks like crazy.

now that apple apparently sees its future in whatever the X becomes, i'm wondering if the 8/8+ will continue as an SE-type midrange device and remain fine for most things, and whether ios has reached a point of maturity and will settle down as well. (totally prepared to eat my words though.)

iOS a littler too mature iyam

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 23 October 2017 20:04 (six years ago) link

LITTLE, a LITTLE too goddamn it

okay maybe not the keyboard

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 23 October 2017 20:05 (six years ago) link

yeah, in some ways it feels like they ran out of mature and are just fiddling with things

app switching without a home button looks sweet. hope all the new gestures work this well...

Lee626, Thursday, 26 October 2017 10:38 (six years ago) link

oddly satisfying

Jeff, Thursday, 26 October 2017 10:42 (six years ago) link

looks cool. not $1000 cool, but cool.

Nhex, Thursday, 26 October 2017 19:10 (six years ago) link

otm, simply can’t justify that price tag

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 October 2017 19:24 (six years ago) link

I was curious so I ran the numbers

Original iPhone in 2007 was $599 but required a two year contract to be signed, so roughly $750 - $800, translating to somewhere between $875 - $950 in 2017 dollars

They dropped the original's price significantly to $399 (plus the carrier subsidy) only three months later, though.

mh, Thursday, 26 October 2017 19:32 (six years ago) link

I totally had a "oh that's neat, too bad I will never pay that much for it" reaction, too

Marcus Hiles Remains Steadfast About Planting Trees.jpg (DJP), Thursday, 26 October 2017 19:34 (six years ago) link

yeah, and i don't think i'll regret buying an 8+, mainly because i won't be paying a premium to beta test a load of apple's new tech. also i think everyone knows there'll be an x+ along in a year or two, by which time supply chains will be keeping up and the price might drop to a reasonable amount.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 October 2017 20:09 (six years ago) link

i mean here the difference between the 8 and the 8+ is ~$150 (for which you get better screen/battery/camera/speakers), but the jump to an x is ~$350 for face id and an oled panel that's longer but slightly narrower. that's kind of insane.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 October 2017 20:13 (six years ago) link

better battery life too

Spottie, Thursday, 26 October 2017 20:14 (six years ago) link

Price to me is only $11 more a month since I am on the iPhone upgrade plan. Which will only last a year when I get whatever is brand new next year. So the whole $1000 phone doesn’t really bother me, since I just lease.

Jeff, Thursday, 26 October 2017 20:20 (six years ago) link

you've nailed it there, imo most x purchases will be on plans which will find ways to absorb the cost.

spottie: cheers, i forgot battery life. pretty significant tbh.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 October 2017 20:25 (six years ago) link

SE battery life remains incredible, I’ve gone two days wo charging, w normal city usage

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 26 October 2017 20:29 (six years ago) link

i just backdated to a new SE, i'm so happy about it (from a 6+)

my reasoning was that they will never make a small phone again

harbinger of failure (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 26 October 2017 20:43 (six years ago) link

backdated? whatever the opposite of updated is.

I think the X pricing will just become the regular pricing for new phones from now on. Doubt there will be a successor to the 8

hella expensive but i easily use my phone 3x-4x more than my computer for personal stuff now. i think this may become the new normal for most people.

, Friday, 27 October 2017 14:14 (six years ago) link

yup, I think it's phone > work computer > iPad > home computer for me

mh, Friday, 27 October 2017 14:42 (six years ago) link

I probably use my phone a hundred times a day. At least.

Jeff, Friday, 27 October 2017 14:46 (six years ago) link

Yeah, phone as main hub is normcore

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Friday, 27 October 2017 14:48 (six years ago) link

"After 11 payments, you’re eligible to upgrade to a new iPhone. Just trade in your current iPhone and simply start the programme again with your new choice of model, colour or storage capacity. It’s that easy".

What could posibly go wrong?

Compare car loans, allowing people to acquire a new car for a certain time period in exchange for a deposit and monthly fees, before handing back the vehicle, trading it in for another. Borrowers are stretched- figures from the US Federal Reserve Bank of New York show overdue car loan repayments have risen to levels not seen since the financial crisis.

I use my kettle more than my DSLR but I'm definitely not paying more for it.

Alba, Friday, 27 October 2017 15:54 (six years ago) link

Marcus Hiles Remains Steadfast About Planting Trees.jpg (DJP), Friday, 27 October 2017 15:57 (six years ago) link

Or even better, does your kettle take pictures?

Marcus Hiles Remains Steadfast About Planting Trees.jpg (DJP), Friday, 27 October 2017 15:58 (six years ago) link

If you're really afraid of getting underwater on phone payments, then that plan isn't at all for you -- get a prepaid plan and buy a cheaper phone outright.

At least in the last few years carriers have been forced into not doing the required subsidy plans

mh, Friday, 27 October 2017 16:10 (six years ago) link

The upgrade plan is great if you get a new phone every year anyway and don’t want to deal with selling your old one.

Jeff, Friday, 27 October 2017 16:56 (six years ago) link

I’d orobably do the upgrade plan if it were available in Australia, not so lucky. The best you can do is 12 months interest free and then you have to sell the phone when it’s time to upgrade, Apple will give me $255 for my 6plus which seems pretty paltry when their asking $2000+ once you factor in phone, case and apple care.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 27 October 2017 17:30 (six years ago) link

average life on last two macs has been 7 years. average life on an iphone 3-4?

||||||||, Friday, 27 October 2017 18:00 (six years ago) link

Not sure AppleCare on this thing makes sense.

In my experience, Apple will replace almost anything in the 1st year for any reason. After that, even if you have to pay the screen fix out of warranty it's $40 more than apple pay + deductible. I guess it makes sense if you drive over things with trucks a lot? Worst case, I'd just get a refurbished 7 or something.
