i can't imagine not anticipating a new mario tbh, especially in the wake of nintendo's success of reinventing zelda for the switch

Review embargo lifted and Metacritic appears to have crashed

groovypanda, Thursday, 26 October 2017 13:18 (six years ago) link

i see eurogamer rated it 'essential' but i'm trying to stay away from specifics - knowing that you get to see mario's nipples in this one is already too much of a spoiler for me

I've known in my heart for twenty years that Nintendo is the best, I'm glad they're having their apotheosis.

I've been following this Switch stuff very casually, but boy does it make me want to shell out and buy a new Nintendo system for the first time in a long time.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 October 2017 19:06 (six years ago) link

dude Zelda alone!!!

Nhex, Thursday, 26 October 2017 19:09 (six years ago) link

shd not leave zelda alone thats how she keeps getting captured

lag∞n, Thursday, 26 October 2017 19:10 (six years ago) link

A little scared that the games, let alone the system, cost so much. But if I focus on just two or three games that should last me a while. Mario kart, Zelda, Mario...

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 October 2017 19:12 (six years ago) link

interesting how major titles have cost $60 since the 90s despite 2 decades of inflation and like a tenfold increase in content/playtime

ciderpress, Thursday, 26 October 2017 19:27 (six years ago) link

yeah, I have no idea, I'm old. I haven't really bought games since the original Nintendo.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 October 2017 19:29 (six years ago) link

Earthbound on SNES released at $80 apparently which was one of the reasons why it bombed stateside. I learned this recently

mario developers brought in Shigeru Miyamoto to test out their open world and he simply sat on frogs' faces for hours

ciderpress, Thursday, 26 October 2017 19:55 (six years ago) link

yeah i remember even SNES-era games - like all the Square games and the Street Fighter titles easily going around ~$80 at release, which would be way more now.
but it probably cost a lot money per-unit to manufacture cartridges vs. blu-rays. the Switch has a bit of an excuse with using cartridges again

i was at a panel last weekend hosted by the lost levels guy where he talked about earthbound bombing. a lot of it was down to people thinking the graphics were bad. (remember "dragon's lair" cost 50 cents a play and it wasn't for the incredible gameplay)

and yeah the price point of games being fixed at $60 in perpetuity has led to a lot of... creative workarounds. day 1 dlc and loot crates and so forth.

i was at a panel last weekend hosted by the lost levels guy where he talked about earthbound bombing. a lot of it was down to people thinking the graphics were bad.

the marketing was also completely inept. one full-page ad showed no gameplay and said "This game stinks".

i remember the days of $60 SNES games well. nowadays those games would be $100. and yeah i recall more rare things like FF6 went for $80, that is $130 in 2017 dollars! it is funny how much of video game culture is fuming at the mouth about microtransactions and loot crates and evil companies. imo we are in a golden age of value
