i was at a panel last weekend hosted by the lost levels guy where he talked about earthbound bombing. a lot of it was down to people thinking the graphics were bad. (remember "dragon's lair" cost 50 cents a play and it wasn't for the incredible gameplay)

and yeah the price point of games being fixed at $60 in perpetuity has led to a lot of... creative workarounds. day 1 dlc and loot crates and so forth.

i remember the days of $60 SNES games well. nowadays those games would be $100. and yeah i recall more rare things like FF6 went for $80, that is $130 in 2017 dollars! it is funny how much of video game culture is fuming at the mouth about microtransactions and loot crates and evil companies. imo we are in a golden age of value

yeah the related bigger reason for earthbound bombing was it took them a year to localise it so it came out after FF6 and around the same time as Chrono trigger rather than preceding them

to be real, Earthbound did, graphically, look like complete garbage compared to FF4, FF6, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, et al. that's difficult - the sound and music, while quirky and charming, were not inviting. the dragon quest-style difficulty and battling were quickly going out of style even by then. marketing was bad, but let's not pretend the game isn't pretty alien-ating

Earthbound clearly bombed because people were turned off that there was a character named Poo

A program called Hakchi, which I ran using a virtual version of Windows on my Mac, it took an evening to figure it out but I got it working

did not expect to be sitting on frog faces so soon. this game is awesome and makes motion controls fun. hats are cool. moons are cool. only disappointed that I could not control mario-frog's tongue.

having fun so far, it feels less like mario 64 than people were saying though and more like sunshine/galaxy with bigger levels and more hidden stuff.

it's been 32 years since super mario bros released on the NES, and still nothing has changed. still the same run-jump-save the princess fairy tale kiddie formula rehashed over and over again for the 600th time. and not only that, but this game is 900p in 2017, in the middle of the 4K age! absolutely unacceptable. it's time for nintendo to give it up and die.

The download version of LA Noire on Switch doesn't fit on a Switch, which means you have to buy a microSD card to play it.

Meanwhile, you can't play LA Noire's Nintendo Switch game cartridge until you've also downloaded a 14GB digital download file.

So how about the digital version? It weighs in at 29GB, which is huge for a Nintendo Switch game. It's so big, in fact, you need to buy a separate microSD card to install it on.

you should get a microSD card anyway if you plan to buy eShop games at all, the switch has very little internal storage. but yeah 3rd party publishers refusing to use a cart big enough to hold the game when they can just put half the game on and make you download the rest is going to be a thing to watch out for, there's already a few games that do it.

DOOM is out on friday - loved it on ps4, can't resist having it handheld

really loving this console. i went on a few plane rides last week and it was so nice to have. got to say at first i was skeptical of the controllers but i freakin' LOVE them now. until now i have only used an old Playstation controller. feels so good to be free of that huge brick and have these tiny, light controllers that you can just dangle off the wrists when you are chilling.

on the minus side between Mario + Zelda downloads i am almost out of space. i guess my next game will be a physical cart....

if you want to go digital just get a 128gb microsd card and you can fit a bunch of games

i'm guessing people put around 50-150+ hours into Zelda, depending on their completionist tendencies. what about mario? 20 to 30 hours?

these days i probably spend more time reading about video games then actually playing them. Nier Automata has been my main game for several weeks now, and i'm only 15 hours in (it rules btw). so if i play about 15 hours a month, i could maybe get by with nothing but mario and zelda for an entire year (180 hours). so if the switch + mario and zelda costs about $420 all together, i'm basically paying about $2.33 per hour of switch gameplay in that year. would i pay $2.33 right now to play zelda for an hour? yes i would. so what i'm saying is, economically, i basically HAVE to buy a switch and mario and zelda for myself this christmas.

ill buy a memory card for sure but may not get another AAA game for a while (might check out some indie stuff like Stardew Valley tho). 128GB card is not very pricey and should hold a sizable games library.

Mario + Zelda is such a great pair of games to start a console with. Zelda is such a vast, deep, endless world to explore. Mario is no less explorable but in much more bite-sized chunks. these two games alone will keep me entertained for months maybe a year. eventually a new Metroid, Zelda, and/or Mario will come out, and this will be the only place to play them.

Mario takes under 15 hours to “beat Bowser” but almost certainly takes four+ times as long to “do everything”. In Zelda there’s not even really an “everything” that you can do. You could get every Korok seed (a fool’s errand) but more fun would be whomping on bad guys and collecting to upgrade all your gear and get maximum loving from the Great Fairies
