Did you smash the screen with your vomit??

Ha I wish it was that interesting a story; I blearily put my phone on a windowsill after plugging it in and it promptly slid off and landed face down on a concrete floor, splintering the screen all to be damned.

The bachelor party (of former ILXor Fluffy Bear/Austerity Ponies) had one condition; bring the most absurd/disgusting alcohol you could find. This was my contribution.

Even on the zero-interest installment plan?

― Spencer Chow, Friday, October 27, 2017 3:03 PM (fifteen minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

fair. if you don't mind the paperwork and trust yourself to make the payments and our credit score is good (and won't be made worse by the lease) then buying the same thing with interest free payments is free money.

but a phone lease is not the same thing. it bakes in the cost of an upgrade and insurance and extra profit for more than one third party.

I would get installments without AppleCare which is a (somewhat hidden) option.

average life on last two macs has been 7 years. average life on an iphone 3-4?

― ||||||||, Saturday, 28 October 2017 05:00 (two hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

macs aren't advancing all that quickly compared to phones though. the mbp i got in 2010 is absolutely fine (i'm using it right now), but the iphone 4 from the same year struggles to run ios 7 from 2013.

not that i'm saying an x will definitely run ios 18, but phone power has to plateau at some point.

yes, i suppose my point is (a) if phone tech slows down like mac tech has, the bloating potential of ios 15 on an iphone xiii (or whatever their naming convention is now) would be limited, so (b) they might be forced to stop bloating ios the way they've already stopped bloating osx

or (c)

otm, this is probably where we'll be by 2020, apple saying "fuck this abrogation of moore's law, we'll do it ourselves"

i have one on the way but am still skeptical about face ID. youtube reviews are out and everything about it makes it seem slower/less convenient than touchID

, Monday, 30 October 2017 17:45 (six years ago) link

Still horrified how slow/bad Siri is, don't trust in FaceID

Nhex, Monday, 30 October 2017 19:30 (six years ago) link

Touch ID gets faster the more you use it as it learns more of your fingerprint. I’d imagine face ID will as well.

I have no desire to have to make eye contact with my phone every time I want to use it, even if it can see me in the dark.

right but the whole 'swipe to unlock' is bad. with touchID phones you can pull from your pocket and be at yr home screen before you even raise it to yr face

, Monday, 30 October 2017 20:10 (six years ago) link

despite reports from people who apparently don't know what they're talking about, the music & radio apps in watchos 4.1 do work on a non-lte series 3. they just suck it across from your phone via bluetooth.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 2 November 2017 11:38 (six years ago) link

had a look at an x today. it’s definitely good, but it really doesn’t stand out all that much against other phones. even the screen is on par with current oled screens. the hype train is crazy.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 3 November 2017 09:49 (six years ago) link

The thing I like about the X is the larger screen in a smaller form factor. I’ll be checking at least one store today on the off chance there are any available

calstars, Friday, 3 November 2017 11:39 (six years ago) link

What I really want on an iPhone is a blackberry style notification light. So I can leave the phone alone and come back later and see if I have any voicemails etc without having to interact with it

Saw one at the Apple Store today. It's ... nice? Not having the home button seems to be NBD, though it's harder to get to the camera now. The screen doesn't seem evenly lit -- in the books app there are various tone shifts in the white page. The size feels a bit odd -- it's narrower than I'd thought. I think I'd prefer something less deep and more wide.

There was a reasonable line at the store, but nothing at all like when the 6 came out.

stet, Friday, 3 November 2017 15:29 (six years ago) link

harder to get to the camera? don't you just swipe left from the lock screen?

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 3 November 2017 16:00 (six years ago) link

That still works on the lock screen, yep. My problem is from the home screen or in apps. Right now control centre is easy to get by swiping up from the bottom -- and then the camera button's under yr thumb. But now you have to swipe down from the hard-to-reach top-right corner and your thumb ends up in the wrong place to hit it.

stet, Friday, 3 November 2017 17:21 (six years ago) link

control centre is fucked imo. swiping down one-handed from top for full audio controls is barely possible even on my SE

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 3 November 2017 17:50 (six years ago) link

100% otm. should be a slide up from the right side of the screen or something

Spottie, Friday, 3 November 2017 18:15 (six years ago) link

Not having the home button seems to be NBD

on day one sure, but given how quickly edge-swipe gestures went out the fucking window on the iphone 6 (even by ios 10 edge swiping had become pot luck), we need to see how well it still works when ios 13 comes out. that was my second reason for not getting an X (the first was price).

The screen doesn't seem evenly lit -- in the books app there are various tone shifts in the white page.

isn’t that a key appeal of oled? pretty bad if the Xes are all like that tbh.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 3 November 2017 19:57 (six years ago) link

i'm thinking they'll probably add some kind of Expose type set up in iOS where you can designate which swipes do what functions. top right for control center sucks

, Friday, 3 November 2017 20:12 (six years ago) link

it's enough to deter me from buying it atm

Spottie, Friday, 3 November 2017 20:14 (six years ago) link

xp they might have to, just to keep it usable with one hand.

it also seems an odd decision to add yet another row of app icons. the idea of a persistent dock just for apps is probably lost on most people who don’t even use all 28 apps on their home screen, so why not do something useful with that?

In CNN review, identical twin unlocks her sister's iPhone X on first attempt using Face ID. I hope X buyers with twin siblings really trust each other. (This wouldn't work with Touch ID because fingerprints aren't genetic, so identical twins won't have different fingerprints.)

calstars, Saturday, 4 November 2017 00:32 (six years ago) link

It cooled down. Setting it up was certainly warming it up.

Overall, going to take getting used to. I miss the width of the plus, but I think it will just take time till I get used to the vertical space.

Jeff, Saturday, 4 November 2017 00:50 (six years ago) link

Be really interested to know how you get on with that over time. I love the width of the plus, it’s just too deep.

And for what I mostly do (read stuff) extra depth doesn’t give me much — I keep my eyes in place and scroll stuff up to them.

stet, Saturday, 4 November 2017 11:21 (six years ago) link

Time will tell. A couple of things that don't bother me are face ID and the lack of home button.

Face ID is a smidge slower when unlocking the phone, but where it is better is with apps. Seems quicker to unlock dropbox/banking apps/etc with it, especially if you are switching back and forth between apps, you just don't have to continually put your finger on a button. Still, you're probably unlocking your phone more than you are doing this, so weigh your options.

Never want a home button again, the gestures work great. Especially the app switcher, just draw an upside down L and it goes right into it. No need to swipe up and pause, which seems less natural.

Jeff, Saturday, 4 November 2017 12:25 (six years ago) link

But no home button means I pick up my phone upside down half the time.
