Trump, October 2017: Apologize for untruth, u bum

it definitely felt worse knowing that there were so many people reveling in others' misery, especially given the outcome essentially sealed the fate of fact-based argument for good. was pretty much anticipating every argument with a Trump supporter to contain some form of "where'd you get that, the same news sources that said Hillary had a 99.999999% chance to win?", and so far I was absolutely right.

I remember the next day at work being fairly somber. Most people wouldn't talk about their political affiliations (especially not during this cycle) but on that day you could tell. so many people looked like they hadn't slept all night. even the people who I knew voted for him didn't look happy - there was this visible guilt on their faces which I'm totally not imagining. a lot of, "well, I didn't expect him to actually WIN!". most confusing were a few people who were like, "yeah, I found out this morning"...like, how could you not stay up for this??

that said, the longer this goes, the more it looks like we're heading into a situation where practically everyone in the country wishes that Hillary had won instead. so, that's nice.

because I’ve spotted enough election night heartbreaks in the past to know when it’s a good time to have a couple drinks and go to bed early?

seriously, I think I was asleep by 10:30pm central time for the election night

Oh, you should've tried that other thing where your heart throws itself against your ribcage like a frenzied beast and you lie in bed probably having only having a severe panic attack but mostly certain you're going to go into cardiac arrest and expire before the sun rises, it was a real treat.

It was a bad night for sure. Where I feared a multitude of evil this first year, most of the evil plans are halted or grinding down. This is good. Bad is being bludgeoned to death every single day with the shiny, proud and loud stupidity of Trump and his goons. The profound dumbness of it all might even be worse than the evil. There's a chimp in the white house, what will he do today etc.

Yeah, I kind of assumed Trump would be an ineffectual dipshit as president. I was and remain more concerned about the attendant effects of his being president. How many people were comfortable vocally defending Nazis this time last year compared to today? How many public schools are going to be left standing in four years? How many antisocial boundaries are people going to push against until they break because they keep seeing the POTUS getting away with it? There's plenty to be optimistic about, for sure, but this ride is still pretty far from over.

It's getting hard for me to keep coming up with new material, but he's eating a burrito now, so I guess the Muse will soon visit.

i double-checked and the "year one" thread was November 2016. we've done our duty. think it makes sense to either close this grim naming tradition now, or ride it all the way to january 2021.
