I just saw GOC; it's pretty damn good and is in a different key than CMBYN. (eg, violent mud sex.) But I wouldn't agree with the equation.

A colleague who saw it at Key West last month said much the same thing.

also casually full-frontal in the indie Brit way

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 18:36 (six years ago) link

So, it's really looking like the quartet of the year is: Gary Oldman, Frances McDormand, Willem Dafoe, Allison Janney.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 2 November 2017 20:16 (six years ago) link

I used to be an Oscar nerd; now I don't even know which movies they're in (Dafoe excepted).

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 2 November 2017 21:24 (six years ago) link

Oldman as Churchill, McDormand in "Three Billboards..."?

drejelire, Thursday, 2 November 2017 21:28 (six years ago) link

The only way for a Brit to win these days is to play an Audio Animatronic doll.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 2 November 2017 21:30 (six years ago) link

Oldman as Churchill - There is a movie I'd pay not to watch, although I'm sure it will be a big hit with The Football Lads Alliance type crowds. Sometimes I think in post-brexit times every UK movie is just going to be a Dunkirk remake for the next decade.

calzino, Thursday, 2 November 2017 22:03 (six years ago) link

And every horror movie in the U.S. will be about Trump.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Friday, 3 November 2017 13:48 (six years ago) link

McDormand in "Three Billboards..."?

Yup. Unless Sally Hawkins' swamp fever keeps up the momentum.

It's easy when membership in the four groups overlaps, but still, damn.

there are critics in two or more of LA, NY, and Boston? I suspect not.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 16:23 (six years ago) link

NYC, National Society, and L.A. membership often overlapped, esp the first two.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 16:25 (six years ago) link

National Society is the only one that doubles up with others I think.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 16:26 (six years ago) link

well sure, NSFC would be the one that had members for the other groups. xp

The "written by," "directed by" and "produced by" women categories mix TV and film, which only goes to point out how much more work women get in TV than they do in feature films.

Is that the new one by the director of Force Majeure? I liked FM, but the reviews I've read of this one (both positive and negative) make it sound fairly insufferable, I gotta say.

"Insufferable" is a good response to The Square. It tries to Say Something about inequality and the media outrage cycle, but gets bogged down in liberal cringe. And it reaffirms my belief that every movie that comes in at over 2 hours should be taken out of the director's hands and cut to 90 minutes.

I, Fanbrat (j.lu), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 02:51 (six years ago) link

regardless of how bad The Square is it can't be as stupid as that "belief".
