We’re you facing the benches or the penalty box. One of the coolest things is watching giant professional players doing line drills and the fire drill line changes

yeah that seemed like a pretty exciting game for a 2-0 loss. Schneider was standing on his head

two weeks pass...

pick a player. who'd he score his first goal against? then, who did that goalie yield his first goal to? and keep going. ovechkin's thread goes back to georges vezina, for example

went to a game today, took the family

preds not really looking all that intimidating to get beat by a .500 team in a rebuilding year tbh

Fun Fact: The history of the @NHL, founded 100 years ago today, can be tracked through five players.

Jaromir Jagr played against Guy Lafleur, who played against Gordie Howe, who played against Dit Clapper, who played with/against Cy Denneny, who played on opening night. #NHL100 pic.twitter.com/vYM5UGLI4q

It takes six steps to get from Bartolo Colon back to the first MLB game in 1876.

Bartolo Colon played with Harold Baines for the 1999 Cleveland Indians
Harold Baines played with Minnie Minoso for the 1980 Chicago White Sox
Minnie Minoso played with Phil Cavarretta for the 1954 Chicago White Sox
Phil Cavarretta played with Charlie Grimm for the 1935 Chicago Cubs
Charlie Grimm played with Red Ames for the 1918 St. Louis Cardinals
Red Ames played with Jim O'Rourke for the 1904 New York Giants

clemenza, Monday, 27 November 2017 02:05 (six years ago) link

(Two gimmicks on that list: besides Minnie Minoso, Jim O'Rourke retired in 1893, then came back at the age of 53 for one game in 1904. If you exclude Minoso it takes seven steps, and if you cut O'Rourke's career off at 1893, it'd probably take eight.)

sabres update:

6-16-4 for 16 points -- only 15 points behind the expansion team (which has a game in hand)

in 26 games they've had 82 power play opportunities, during which they've scored 10 goals and allowed 7

their defensemen -- all of them -- have yet to score a goal

mookieproof, Sunday, 24 December 2017 04:16 (six years ago) link

Ok so the Knights are pretty fun to watch, if a little systems-y/motor-y.

It shows how high the skill level of the league is and how absurdly great the great players are rn. The 10 best players of all time are probably playing right now

i don't necessarily disagree but i want you to name them

mookieproof, Thursday, 28 December 2017 05:21 (six years ago) link

Lol I tried after I posted that

Crosby
Ovi
Mcdavid
Doughty
PK

Down ballot votes for Kane and Toews

Last 20 years or so add Lemieux, Lindstrom, Bourque, brodeur, Jagr,

The more time passes the more Gretz was the right man at the right time

i will fite you for malkin

Hasek

YouTube_-_funy_cats.flv (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 28 December 2017 05:34 (six years ago) link

Yeah I thought about malkin. He’s deep down toward 10 tho

YouTube_-_funy_cats.flv (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 28 December 2017 05:35 (six years ago) link

ugh, goalies

mookieproof, Thursday, 28 December 2017 05:36 (six years ago) link

It’s really only brodeur. Roy was the last of the psycho goalies. Hasek was kind of a freak. After that first Chicago cup and they ditched Khabi I decided that goalies are actually fungible/glorified relief pitchers

YouTube_-_funy_cats.flv (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 28 December 2017 05:38 (six years ago) link

Gretz was the right man at the right time

yes, but no one else at that time was anywhere near it

brodeur is a hall of famer and then some for 20 years but he was never a guy that clamored inside heads like hasek imo

mookieproof, Thursday, 28 December 2017 05:43 (six years ago) link

Everyone compares Gretz to Ruth in terms of dominance over the field so that comparison is correct, I suppose. The euro influence wasn’t as pronounced as it is now.

Brodeur has kinda become the archetype for big goalies, even after the Finnish/catch everything school came around. He has a longer tail. Hasek is mythic tho, I agree.

YouTube_-_funy_cats.flv (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 28 December 2017 05:48 (six years ago) link

also idk i can't personally speak to orr but i saw paul coffey and he was good but orr apparently changed the game?

mookieproof, Thursday, 28 December 2017 05:48 (six years ago) link

Yeah Coffey was a rush guy. I believe people who say Orr was the truth. I look at D men like Doughty and Pk and think about borque a lot. Short-ish bulldozers who know where to be

Kings giving Dustin Brown a nice pregame commemorating his 1000 games played. Best LA KINGS player of all time

freedom is not having to measure life with a ruler (outdoor_miner), Friday, 29 December 2017 03:17 (six years ago) link

Well that may as yet be Robitaille or Blake

YouTube_-_funy_cats.flv (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 29 December 2017 03:23 (six years ago) link

Seems weird to say Brown is the best LA player of all time when Gretzky played on that team.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Friday, 29 December 2017 15:44 (six years ago) link

Gretzky had some fine years in LA, but was also hobbled by injuries. got his team to the finals once and lost (Hrudey in goal, so i realize this this may not be fair). His best years were in Edm though.
Robitaille is my fave King all-time so i don't discount him at all, but DB is such a complete player. I've never seen anybody else lay big clean hits on people while in the same motion turn a fine offensive play the way he does. And he does it everyday. And he's captained 2 cup-winning teams.
