My wife got her previous phone wet and the only thing that died was the home button, so she had to use the virtual home button for several months. A day or two to get used to it and then no probs.

It's just fatiguing. Almost like looking at a screen that's not refreshing fast fast enough.

Doing some googling reveals something called "pulse-width modulation (PWM)" which is how the screen is dimmed. Apparently some people are very sensitive to it.

Hardware lock in on the iPhone X was very likely more than one year ago due to supply chain management.

FWIW I find Face ID way better than I expected.

It is impressive and even "magical" but I don't think it actually makes using the phone more efficient. Like, when I'm checking email when I wake up and I'm lying down, I have to tap the screen first. Maybe they'll sort it out, or maybe I'll get used to it over the next week.

On the pros side, the notch doesn't bother me at all!

i picked up a pair of beats x (with the w1 bluetooth chip) for cheap and it's been great - and i was a huge skeptic of removing the jack in the 7. sound quality is 'good enough' but taking out yr phone without cords getting in the way is great.

the big downside is battery management - having to turn them on/off and charge. i'm looking forward to when they'll have wireless charging for the beats (not just the airpods, which i know is coming).

I think I charge mine about once a week? I don’t use them everyday, but the battery life is great, which is one of the most important things with BT headphones.

otm about wireless headphones. now that i'm all the way in i'm wondering why it took me so long. my new sony on-ears (which have to go back because they rattle ffs) last 30 hours – five days in and the out-of-the-box charge level is still at medium. i've not noticed the sound degradation at all.

So this thing is starting to bum me out. The screen is just unpleasant to look at beyond the app screen popping and photos looking great on Instagram. I'm sure games would look great too, but I haven't had time to play any. But reading black or dark gray text on a white screen is fatiguing.

really sorry to hear this spencer. perhaps apple can make adjustments in software updates that don't entirely fix the problem but make it easier on your eyes.

if you do decide to get an 8, keep in mind the less capable camera, the 1 gb drop in ram (which might get under your feet in a couple of years) and the smaller battery. the 8+ might be too big for your liking, but it's a phenomenal phone and worth considering.

my coworker really likes the jabra move ones. wait for the black friday sales or shop around — he got them for $60, which is a little out of your range but worth it, I think

battery drain is slightly less pronounced after the last couple of updates, but WAY worse than it was before i installed ios11 & i am still kinda >:( about it

Feeling u Veg. It's terrible. I was used to a rhythm of carrying around a charger every other day, when charged not having to worry about the next day. Now it just leaks juice like there's no tomorrow; the battery runs out faster than you can empty a bucket of water. It's crazy. And for what? A bigger font and worse graphics? Yeah ok thx apple...

I know it's prob a ploy to get me to buy the newest phone but c'mon man, I only have this new 5S for 2 years. Do we not allow to use a device for even a mere two years now? This is not progress.

I'm oblivious to all this battery stuff cause I long ago gave up on ever using my phone without a battery case. Yes it's heavier but never having to worry about running out is totally worth it.

Are you guys explicitly putting it in low battery mode? This will improve your life if you aren’t doing it.

Sometimes I will preemptively put in low battery mode. Like if know I’m not going to use my phone for an amount of time. Not sure if it saves that much, but psychologically it seems to help. I also always roll with a battery pack in my bag for emergencies.

This is the first time I feel it's necessary to put it low battery mode.

the autocorrect has been changed somehow in iOS 11 and the fucking thing keeps making odd capitalizations. Driving me bananas.

did you check in settings to see what's using battery?

I did but it's not really helpful. 45% whatsapp, sure, but 45% used to last way longer.. I revoked most of the auto-background checks for my apps etc.

Not really, I was in my warm car for over an hour. Is cold known to drain the battery?

LBI - 2 years is not a unreasonable time to expect a battery to fail if you use your phone on a regular basis throughout the day. Your charge cycle count is probably pretty high.

Hmm, before iOS11 I'd charge at night and almost never found it under 20% at the end of the day. But if it's the battery, ok.

wrt cold, on especially biting winter days in NYC I've had phones go straight from 20% to shutdown

that was pretty common on my iphone 5. my 6 has been good though. it's three years old at this point so its poor battery life is due to any number of things.

agree that iOS 11 has slowed it down to molasses though.

i don't want to jinx it but my SE seems fine? it's only 1 year old though. and i got the one with the enormous SSD.

My iPhone 6 battery started fritzing exactly like yours, about 2.5 years in, and crapped out exactly three years to the date I got it. I went the $100 route because I needed it fixed asap, but iFixit has a pretty easy $25 kit5 kit to DIY.

my iphone did the same after 2.5 years (instant collapse from ~30% to dead), but only on cold days. at the time i didn't think about it as a fault, just thought lithium ion was being lithium ion.

More thoughts on the X, I really like the gestures! I can’t imagine interacting with phone in any other way right now. Agree with many people that the control center location is not ideal, but doesn’t bother me too much since I’ve gotten pretty good at the reachability gesture. I’ve seen suggestions to improve it by moving to a force touch on the home bar, or putting as a card on the right when you are in the app switcher.

Still miss the width of the plus though, it just seems more valuable than height. Sign me up for a X+ next year.

i want to pin a post on this thread every time a new iOS comes out that says "it's much much more likely that your battery is old and you're maybe using your phone a little bit more than usual to check out the new os, than the os has broken your battery. new batteries are like $30."
