he brings good content imo and isn't problematic?

you guys realize we all invented Long Twitter back in 2001

People are starting to thread these massive posts and fuck me it’s the most awful thing ever. I thought everyone was being overblown abt it but 240 is a big mistake.
― stet, Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:23 (six years ago) link
Hoping it will be more bearable when the novelty of it wears off? Probably not.
― Jeff, Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:24 (six years ago) link
i know i already said this but literally the single thing that was good about twitter was the forced compression of the writing

the only good twitter accounts are neonwario and everyone adjacent to him

neonwario is like a dare for how many irony levels deep can u go, def one of the lowkey lynchpins to twitter society
― lag∞n, Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:00 (six years ago) link
I still have no idea how to use Twitter. If you follow hundreds of accounts, there's no way you read your whole timeline, so how do you pick and choose?
― ur-oik (rip van wanko), Saturday, 11 November 2017 20:10 (six years ago) link
whatevers there lol
― lag∞n, Saturday, 11 November 2017 20:15 (six years ago) link
i follow like 200 ppl max and prune fairly often, also maybe only 80 of them are particularly prolific so my feed isn't that chaotic
also you just read whatever's recent that's what it's all about
― ciderpress, Saturday, 11 November 2017 20:17 (six years ago) link
i try to keep my following under 1000
― lag∞n, Saturday, 11 November 2017 20:18 (six years ago) link
Surely 280 guarantees that any given tweet will now be seen by fewer ppl
― ur-oik (rip van wanko), Saturday, 11 November 2017 20:19 (six years ago) link
yeah good point, there are all sorts of weird effects that cld happen faster scrolling more skipping/scanning etc
― lag∞n, Saturday, 11 November 2017 20:22 (six years ago) link
one thing on mastodon that's kind of cool to look at but would never work for something as big as twitter is the 'federated timeline' which is just a real-time firehose of every post on the network. like 3/4 of the posts on it are in japanese tho because the biggest mastodon instances are the ones for niconico and pixiv

i've been aggressively pruning my feed of moralist grandstanding, performative outrage, and basically anything that annoys me and now it's pretty boring and therefore much better. following a few accounts that have a greater reach and are quality retweeters (like lagoon) is enough for me. usually if something is particularly funny/good/weird it'll pop up in my feed eventually.
― ryan, Saturday, 11 November 2017 20:42 (six years ago) link
thx bud, i just started trying to eliminate the moral/sociological experts in my feed even tho theyre often informative its such a vibe killer
― lag∞n, Saturday, 11 November 2017 20:50 (six years ago) link
yeah otm i tend to follow professional people with specialized interests these days instead of ppl who feel the need to have an opinion on everything even if the opinions are “right”
― k3vin k., Saturday, 11 November 2017 20:55 (six years ago) link
yeah not RTs, it just shows me algorithmically selected tweets that people I follow have liked, not even RTed. if there's a way to turn it off it's well hidden since I can't find it― ciderpress, Thursday, 9 November 2017 Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

The other side is some of the same ppl show up so often for me I don't have to follow them.
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 11 November 2017 20:57 (six years ago) link
knowledgeable specialists who like to share and learn are def some of the best follows
― lag∞n, Saturday, 11 November 2017 20:58 (six years ago) link
yesterday i unfollowed someone and the algo immediately showed me two of their tweets via the x and five others liked interface, trying to get me to change my mind lol
― lag∞n, Saturday, 11 November 2017 20:59 (six years ago) link
which must work some of the time, or they were just testing it
yeah a handful of the ppl i used to follow for jokes and general nonsense pivoted to posting mostly about politics in the wake of the election and i had to prune a lot of them. not because they werent aligned with my views but because i only want so many politics tweets in my timeline and for that id rather prioritize ppl w/ more experience talking about it and/or from marginalized groups, rather than internet jokesters-cum-pundits
― ciderpress, Saturday, 11 November 2017 21:03 (six years ago) link
i'm not gonna miss out on any good jokes about current events regardless, algorithms have ensured that

i must see half of all krang and pixelated boat tweets and i dont even want to
― lag∞n, Saturday, 11 November 2017 21:14 (six years ago) link
pixelated boat is so fn bad lol
― flopson, Saturday, 11 November 2017 21:38 (six years ago) link
it's like, printed on a t-shirt in a head shop level humour
lol i blocked pixelated boat
― ciderpress, Saturday, 11 November 2017 21:38 (six years ago) link
i'm also realizing that myabe the reason why im not seeing a ton of 280 char tweet is i have a lot of words muted and the longer a tweet is the more likely it contains one of them
― ciderpress, Saturday, 11 November 2017 21:40 (six years ago) link
I liked the how the fake Orwell quotes got into The Guardian as Orwell himself though. That was great.
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 11 November 2017 21:41 (six years ago) link
(made up by Pixelated boat)
few accounts that have a greater reach and are quality retweeters (like lagoon)
i think the feed would be to just follow like a dozen or so of these as twitter digest, and then a handful of low-frequency favs
― flopson, Saturday, 11 November 2017 21:47 (six years ago) link
*ideal feed
― flopson, Saturday, 11 November 2017 21:49 (six years ago) link
actually there is a third kinda-famous guy I follow - american sports media dude and chart expert jon bois. he is the best
― imago, Saturday, 11 November 2017 21:58 (six years ago) link
Tyshawn Sorey follows me. I like his music so much I didn't post for days. Now I got over it, I just unselfconsciously don't post fuck all for days! Probably means I'm doing it wrong etc!
― calzino, Saturday, 11 November 2017 22:17 (six years ago) link
Some people I stay loyal to consistently post awful shit: The Canary, Orwell Memes, shrill shouty stuff about imminent demise of the Con gov etc. But I stick with them, as much as they bore me rigid.
― calzino, Saturday, 11 November 2017 22:22 (six years ago) link
there was this evil sage tweet that was something like "keep stomping around my room getting so mad about all the sweet dsa pussy krang t nelson must get" that i cant find because he deleted his account but it was the only thing related to krang ive ever found funny
― ( ^_^) (Lamp), Saturday, 11 November 2017 22:35 (six years ago) link
re: krang and Pixelated boat (also Hippo). Half of the time they are just beefing on politics but it can be seen as a cry of pain a lot of the time.
@dril is left politics but he/she is much more careful about tying to anything like an identifiable politics.
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 11 November 2017 22:45 (six years ago) link
not gonna deny they all have classic moments but fucking even the 90th percentile pixelated boat tweet is some warmed up trenchant social commentary

most of my favorite ppl i follow have their own voice like that and not the twitter house style
― ciderpress, Saturday, 11 November 2017 23:12 (six years ago) link
yeah the sameness of the language and joke structures makes following most of the weird joke guys unfun. i dont really follow any of them and just look @ there feeds when im bored or in the mood for those type of jokes
― ( ^_^) (Lamp), Saturday, 11 November 2017 23:15 (six years ago) link
Did a purge last year, amounting roughly to me following 300, w/ 600 followers. Following 375 now with 805 followers and it feels like a fitting ratio.
But then I like pixelated boat so who am I etc
