all these playoff teams are crap

Number None, Monday, 13 November 2017 21:25 (six years ago) link

Otm. Worst play-offs in forever. And to think we'll only get more and more countries at the WC in the coming years... Fitba's in the gutter etc

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 13 November 2017 21:27 (six years ago) link

Loving this game tbh and I'm a Italy fan

the intentional phallusy (Noodle Vague), Monday, 13 November 2017 21:35 (six years ago) link

So am I. They're pressing hard now.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 13 November 2017 21:35 (six years ago) link

5 mins

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 13 November 2017 21:37 (six years ago) link

Netherlands not being at a WC is a shame, but Italy; Italy not being there is a fucking tragedy.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 13 November 2017 21:39 (six years ago) link

That's why we have qualifiers

the intentional phallusy (Noodle Vague), Monday, 13 November 2017 21:42 (six years ago) link

First time since '58 no Italy..

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 13 November 2017 21:43 (six years ago) link

no goals in nine and half hours of playoff football

since Sweden scored in the first leg

Number None, Monday, 13 November 2017 23:06 (six years ago) link

Swedes were organised well at the back but Italy are so useless up front, no ideas

Well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Monday, 13 November 2017 23:13 (six years ago) link

Darmian was one of their main attacking outlets...

Number None, Monday, 13 November 2017 23:14 (six years ago) link

Yeah yeah tragedy whatever there just aren't really any good players in this Italy team any more are there?

Matt DC, Monday, 13 November 2017 23:14 (six years ago) link

nope

Number None, Monday, 13 November 2017 23:16 (six years ago) link

Lots of good players, just not a team.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 13 November 2017 23:23 (six years ago) link

yeh agree with LBI - finally they replaced gabbiadini / darmian with belotti / el shawaaary with 30 mins left & looked way more dangerous immediately
obvs the insigne thing is insane but no idea what gabbiadini has done this season to deserve > belotti

nxd, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 09:17 (six years ago) link

I don't really keep up with Italian football that much but yeah my comment was mostly driven by Gabbiadini being in the team and thinking surely they'd have to do better upfront, in an absolutely crucial game, than some dude who isn't even holding down a consistent place in the Southampton team?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 09:59 (six years ago) link

with their midfield they could almost certainly suffice with a lone forward in immobile or belotti but this is a manager that played 4-2-4 away vs spain haha

Number None, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 16:49 (six years ago) link

lol snap

the intentional phallusy (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 16:50 (six years ago) link

“Idle as trout in light Colonel Jones

these Irish, give them no coins at all; their bones

need toil, their characters no less.” Trevelyan’s

seal blooded the deal table. The Relief

Committee deliberated: “Might it be safe,

Colonel, to give them roads, roads to force

From nowhere, going nowhere of course?”

one out of every ten and then

another third of those again

women – in a case like yours.

Sick, directionless they worked. Fork, stick

were iron years away; after all could

they not blood their knuckles on rock, suck

April hailstones for water and for food?

Why for that, cunning as housewives, each eyed –

as if at a corner butcher – the other’s buttock.

anything may have caused it, spores

a childhood accident; one sees

day after day these mysteries.

Dusk: they will work tomorrow without him.

They know it and walk clear. He has become

a typhoid pariah, his blood tainted, although

he shares it with some there. No more than snow

attends its own flakes where they settle

and melt, will they pray by his death rattle.

You never will, never you know

but take it well woman, grow

your garden, keep house, good-bye.

“It has gone better than we expected, Lord

Trevelyan, sedition, idleness, cured

in one. From parish to parish, field to field;

the wretches work till they are quite worn,

then fester by their work. We march the corn

to the ships in peace. This Tuesday I saw bones

out of my carriage window. Your servant Jones.”

Barren, never to know the load

of his child in you, what is your body

now if not a famine road?

Digging Launch Audio in a New Window
BY SEAMUS HEANEY
Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests; snug as a gun.

Under my window, a clean rasping sound
When the spade sinks into gravelly ground:
My father, digging. I look down

Till his straining rump among the flowerbeds
Bends low, comes up twenty years away
Stooping in rhythm through potato drills
Where he was digging.

The coarse boot nestled on the lug, the shaft
Against the inside knee was levered firmly.
He rooted out tall tops, buried the bright edge deep
To scatter new potatoes that we picked,
Loving their cool hardness in our hands.

By God, the old man could handle a spade.
Just like his old man.

My grandfather cut more turf in a day
Than any other man on Toner’s bog.
Once I carried him milk in a bottle
Corked sloppily with paper. He straightened up
To drink it, then fell to right away
Nicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods
Over his shoulder, going down and down
For the good turf. Digging.

The cold smell of potato mould, the squelch and slap
Of soggy peat, the curt cuts of an edge
Through living roots awaken in my head.
But I’ve no spade to follow men like them.

Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests.
I’ll dig with it.

actually shitting it about this - it's going to be horribly tense.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 17:00 (six years ago) link

Be not sad because all men
Prefer a lying clamour before you:
Sweetheart, be at peace again -- -
Can they dishonour you?

They are sadder than all tears;
Their lives ascend as a continual sigh.
Proudly answer to their tears:
As they deny, deny poor Daryl Murphy yet again

I was going to attempt something with "The Second Coming" but honestly it works just as well verbatim

on the one hand I wish I hadn't wasted my night in the pub on last night's game but on the other hand it isn't £1.50 a pint on a Tuesday so fuck it

Lol you poor Londoners

the intentional phallusy (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 17:23 (six years ago) link

I have great faith in MON. His handling of the pitch/intensity of these ordinary players is a serious asset.

I'd back us to do exactly what we want tonight, like we did the last night.

We're going through.
