sadly, the pressing on the main street stuff ain't so hot -- at least, not on round two, "new day." i actually asked moritz about that in an interview a couple of weeks back, and he said that they had that record pressed in chicago (or detroit, but i think chicago), and the poor result was part of the inspiration for starting up D+M.

amazing fucking tune, though.

The original pressings of Basic Channel related records were cut by Ron Murphy at NSC and pressed at Archer in Detroit.

My copy of "I'm Your Brother" sounds fine, but maybe it is ruff and i just don't notice 'cause it kinda suits the tune.

I love that tune so much.

one time you should check out the ep with "moved" and "flatfunk" on it...forget which label it was on, really good stuff.

I really liked "Pelargonium" back in the 1990s, so I got the album it's on, I think it was called Fog and Lights or something? Wasn't too impressed by it back then, I thought sounded a bit too smooth and nice. It's been 10+ years since I last listened to his stuff though, maybe should give it a new try?

In and out of fog and lights is great, I think this and the 'In Neutral' album put out around the same time were on a driving theme.

Legendary ‘rave’ producer Eon, a.k.a. Ian Loveday, passed away Wednesday, June 17, from complications with pneumonia. He was one of the first producers to gain popularity amongst the late-80s/early-90s rave scene with hits like “Spice” and “Fear the Mind Killer”, the sound being a link between early techno and modern breakbeat.

As Eon, his tracks made their way to early 90s pirate radio stations in London, and then out on vinyl through small labels like BAAD and Vinyl Solution. He would release his most well-known tracks on the seminal album, ‘Void Dweller’ in 1992 at the height of the spread of modern dance music in the US. ‘Void Dweller’, with the hit ‘Spice’ owing its recognizable hook to a sample from David Lynch’s movie “Dune”, was one of the first major label releases, on Columbia, for producers in the burgeoning rave scene.

His work saw release on numerous labels over the years, including Hooj Toons and XL Recordings. In ‘93 he teamed up with fellow British acid pioneer Peter ‘Baby’ Ford, producing many classic tracks including ‘Dead Eye’ which would eventually be released as a single on Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 label. Loveday would go on to release under his Minimal Man moniker up until just before his death.

Eon performed live at Fabric and on Radio One over the years, and worked with producers like Mark Moore (S’Express) and Marcus J Knight. Most recently, he had been busy in the studio with long time collaborator Baby Ford on some new projects.

For many years, there have been rumors circulating about what happened to Spencer. He made a well-publicized move to the Bay Area prior to 2000, giving Chicago - or at least some people in the industry back home - a kiss-off with the acrid track "Swimmin' Wit' Sharks". And so far as anyone knows what happened, that's when something went terribly, terribly wrong.

Gemini was back in Chicago not long after, minus his studio equipment, his DJ gear, or any visible means of support. To the few he encountered, he didn't seem himself. He cut almost all ties, even with people who had known him for years. On one occasion when he was recognized, he vowed revenge on a couple of well-known Chicago House Music producers who he claimed had stolen his music from a laptop. At the time, according to someone who talked with him, he was panhandling - staying in an SRO when he had a good day, a shelter when he didn't.

What had gone wrong? Spencer was still giving interviews as late as 2001, but within a year or two, it all ended. No more tracks, no more gigs, and lifelong friends worried that something was seriously wrong. They couldn't do more than worry: most of them have never seen him again.

When you mentioned him upthread, I checked his Discogs entry and was kinda wondering why he'd stopped releasing stuff after 2000. It's sad to hear what's happened to him, hopefully he will get better eventually.

it is a totally wild and sad story. he turned 40 about a month ago, apparently, though no one knows if he's even alive? :(

Table's comment upthread made me listen to that album for the first time in years... It was better than what I remembered, and "Pelargonium" still kicks ass. Such a pretty and peaceful groove.

i remember getting turned on to gemini by a list of house producers who've seen hard times, homelessness etc. it's like anything, i guess. i really like 'fog and lights' too.

Not sure why I hadn't heard it yet since I really loved "Magic M", but "Disco Bus" by Aquilina & Venturi is rocking it for me right now. It's got the same glitchy vocal gimmick that's worked so well for CvS and Aju.

vocal-as-percussion-element gimmick, I should have typed.

I mentioned it on a perlon thread not long ago but Narcotic Syntax - Calculated Extravagant Licentiousness EP is really, really good. The two A sides. . . I just want to take a huge bite out them. one of the best Perlon's I've heard.

Also Kuniyuki - Precious Hall is also really, really good. An excellent opener track too.

that is sad news about spencer k. once long ago a friend of mine was on acid and took the needle off the record while sk was spinning because he (my friend) was having a bad trip. hilarity ensued tho i remember my friend being even more freaked out afterward because he was being chased around the party by a mightily angry dj. don't mess with the dj !

yes indeed. jack in the box got sued out of existence in illinois back in the 70s (some crazy food poisoning shit) so it's impossible. i miss jess.

it was adonis. dj t wanted him to do a remix back in 2004 or so, he told me they managed to track down adonis after months and months and he was working at burger king, they gave him an advance to do the mix but it never came through and they lost track of him again. some say on quiet nights when there's a full moon you can still hear a whisper on the wind: "too far gone, ain't no way back"

i mean i can't say for sure, but it seems like some people don't have such a hard time finding Adonis:
