The "written by," "directed by" and "produced by" women categories mix TV and film, which only goes to point out how much more work women get in TV than they do in feature films.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Friday, 17 November 2017 13:26 (six years ago) link

How did The Square make it's way unto that list...

Frederik B, Friday, 17 November 2017 14:35 (six years ago) link

going to see The Square tomorrow

Saw it earlier today, actually. So good.

Frederik B, Friday, 17 November 2017 15:11 (six years ago) link

Is that the new one by the director of Force Majeure? I liked FM, but the reviews I've read of this one (both positive and negative) make it sound fairly insufferable, I gotta say.

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Friday, 17 November 2017 15:47 (six years ago) link

the ape scene in My Man Godfrey is funnier.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 17 November 2017 15:48 (six years ago) link

My Man Godfrey is funnier than most things, tbf.

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Friday, 17 November 2017 15:49 (six years ago) link

i found FM overrated, won't pay to see this one

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 17 November 2017 15:51 (six years ago) link

Both ^^^^ true for me too. (I have a screener.)

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Friday, 17 November 2017 15:57 (six years ago) link

Play is way better than Force Majeure, and this is much more like Play. I love it.

Would be thrilled to see Lil Rel Howery get an Oscar nod tbh.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Monday, 20 November 2017 21:42 (six years ago) link

Is that the new one by the director of Force Majeure? I liked FM, but the reviews I've read of this one (both positive and negative) make it sound fairly insufferable, I gotta say.

"Insufferable" is a good response to The Square. It tries to Say Something about inequality and the media outrage cycle, but gets bogged down in liberal cringe. And it reaffirms my belief that every movie that comes in at over 2 hours should be taken out of the director's hands and cut to 90 minutes.

I, Fanbrat (j.lu), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 02:51 (six years ago) link

regardless of how bad The Square is it can't be as stupid as that "belief".

Susan Stranglehands (jed_), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 03:44 (six years ago) link

"every" is too doctrinaire, but wd've helped with Blade Runner 2049

(as would 0 minutes)

Producers Guild of America nominees for Documentary Feature:

Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower
The Newspaperman: The Life and Times of Ben Bradlee

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 17:17 (six years ago) link

Not an intensely impressive slate afaic.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 17:17 (six years ago) link

Unless Jane is about Goodall, I've never even heard of any of these.

Only doc I've seen so far this year is the Gilbert Gottfried one, but haven't there been some notable ones? The Wiseman NYPL thing, for instance?

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 17:25 (six years ago) link

No overlap whatsoever with the Gothams' list ...

Ex Libris – The New York Public Library
Rat Film

Willem Dafoe seems a huge ommission, as well as Gerwig in director.
